Today’s suicide of Missouri State Auditor Tom Schweich, a Republican frontrunner for governor, didn’t strike me as much of a political story apart from the usual cautionary tale of how guns don’t make you safer. But this column from St. Louis Post-Dispatch editorial page editor Tony Messenger just made the story quite a bit weirder:
I have no idea why Schweich killed himself. But for the past several days he had been confiding in me that he planned to accuse the chairman of the Missouri Republican Party, John Hancock, with leading a “whisper campaign” among donors that he, Schweich, was Jewish.
Unless he left a note, we’ll never know for sure why Schweich shot himself. But an anti-semitic smear campaign coming from the state GOP chair? That sounds totally believable. Missouri is one fucked up state.

A couple of weeks later, Politico published a long piece about how Democrats had turned on Wasserman Schultz, upset that she seemed to use her position for her own gain. For instance, she reportedly tried to get the DNC to pay for some of her clothing, although she denies those allegations. The report also found that she and Obama rarely speak and that the White House strongly considered replacing her after the 2012 elections. A third Politico story about her last week reported that “when she sensed Obama was considering replacing her as chair in 2013, she began to line up supporters to suggest the move was both anti-woman and anti-Semitic.”

The event did not happen, and a Schweich spokesman did not respond to multiple requests for comment about the allegations. Nonetheless, Hancock was working the halls of the first floor near Schweich’s office, meeting with journalists, his wife alongside, to preemptively address Schweich’s alleged-allegations. The plan was if Schweich were to have an event making an accusation that Hancock would attend and make Schweich say it face to face.

When I saw this news story yesterday, it struck me as strange, and I figured there had to be more to it. This totally makes sense. People who kill themselves are always conflicted about something. Schweich was depicted as a straight arrow. You can’t be that and a Republican at the same time. The moral of this story is the GOP drives its own to depression and, eventually, suicide.
