Deferred Maintenance

by Goldy — Saturday, 9/6/25, 4:22 pm

If you noticed that this shitty old blog had gotten even shittier recently (really slow or not responding at all), it’s because I hadn’t updated the server it was running on for over 11 years, and had totally forgotten how to do anything at the Linux command line. Well… I think (hope) that’s been fixed. I still don’t know much about Linux, but I’ve managed to migrate the site to a spanking new server. Yay me!

Anyways, chances are you may have lost a few comments over the past couple days and I’ve disabled unsupported plugins so some functionality might be gone. Maybe permanently. Thems the breaks. But I think (hope) this shitty old site should be responsive again. So enjoy doing whatever it is you still do in the comment threads.

UPDATE:
So, the upgrade seemed to fix the original issues. Yay! But it broke my aged, hand-coded, customized theme. Fortunately, Darryl helped talk me through Linux, and after a little trouble-shooting we found a single line of bad code, which means, alas, for the moment, no comment numbers.

My favorite thing to do in comment threads is not leave comments and not read comments from the trolls. But that’s just me.

There’s no edit or delete function. Can you restore these? I just sent you $50.00 instead of my usual $25.00 donation.

It’s not a bribe for any particular action on your part, nor intended to influence your political views; I don’t wish to be a total freeloader that’s all.

There’s also no link or blockquote function. It would be nice to have those back, too, if possible and not too much trouble.

    I checked using

    https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/

And it says the site is down.

Its up right now, with all the functions, but in a format I haven’t seen before. Which is okay, whatever works.

Well, wait a sec, the edit and delete functions still aren’t there.

Patience. The server is up to date, but the original problem still exists. Goldy is still trying to figure out what broke the site.

CNN says a Mexican deportee shipped to war-torn Sudan is back in Mexico. That’s not especially remarkable.

What is remarkable is the mindset of Tricia McLaughlin, Kristi Dogslayer’s official spokesperson. CNN says,

Muñoz was one of eight people deported from the US and sent to east Africa in May. He and the other deportees were initially diverted to Djibouti, where they were held in a converted Conex shipping container on a military base while the Trump administration fought for more than a month in federal court to send them to South Sudan.

Lawyers for the eight detainees – who came from Cuba, Laos, Vietnam and other countries, along with Mexico – had argued that they would face dangerous physical conditions in South Sudan …. By early July, a Supreme Court ruling and a subsequent interpretation by a federal court in Massachusetts allowed the government to send the eight to the war-torn east African nation.

“Law and order prevails,” Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said on X following the decision.

How the fuck is sending detainees to a continent and country where they’ve never been, locking them in a shipping container for a month, then sending them into the middle of a raging civil war, “law and order”???

@7 You guys are doing okay so far. Comments are posting, the donation link is working (as far as I know), and the congenitally brain-damaged lying troll is somewhere else (possibly fucking the horse). Even if perfect isn’t the enemy of good, it can wait a little longer.

The strongest argument against gays I can think of is Peter Thiel, but assholery is mostly an individual thing, so I don’t think we should take our frustration with him out on other gay people.

We don’t need to anyway. According to the rightwing preachers his political ilk listens to, he should be killed in this world (I’m not endorsing that) and will burn in the next one (my opinion on that doesn’t matter, because that’s above my pay grade).

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point announced in June that [actor Tom] Hanks would receive the Thayer Award, which is given annually to an outstanding citizen of the U.S. “whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in West Point’s motto: ‘Duty, Honor, Country.’ ”

At the time of the announcement, the school’s board chairman, Robert A. McDonald, explained that Hanks would be given the award, in part, due to his portrayal of the life of a “service member” in several of his films, including Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump and Greyhound.

“Tom Hanks has done more for the positive portrayal of the American service member, more for the caring of the American veteran, their caregivers and their family, and more for the American space program and all branches of government than many other Americans,” McDonald said in a statement.

But Hanks also endorsed Kamala Harris. The event is canceled.

Need to wonder who’s behind that?

Following up on my post above, two notable awards that went through: The Presidential Medal of Freedom given to Rudy Giuliani, and the $5 million settlement given to the family of domestic terrorist Ashli Babbitt.

I’ve turned back on the fancy comment formatting tool, Roger, with the link and blockquote button, but the comment editing plugin broke the system, so I’m going to have to look for alternatives.

We need to create an alternate stage to the right wing undertakings. Like, for example, hold a huge celebration for Tom Hanks.

Show them that you don’t care about their actions and you’ll flex to achieve youř goals and freedoms.

You don’t like that Florida did away with rainbow crosswalks, then paint your driveway a rainbow, don’t get upset, they want you to be upset. Show them their arrogance no your anger

    Just also shed them

Send your kids to school with rainbow lunchboxes! That’ll probably get ’em expelled from kindergarten, though, and maybe even handcuffed and made to sit in the backseat of a police cruiser.

I wonder how long it’ll be before professional sports are disrupted by ICE grabbing players? Can you imagine a MLB team taking the field without half its players?
