Darcy Burner posts record fundraising totals

by Goldy — Monday, 7/9/07, 10:34 am

Democrat Darcy Burner will report campaign contributions of $199,768 for the second quarter of 2007 — more than any challenger in any congressional district over the same three month period in the history of Washington state. Burner’s fundraising efforts now put her nine months ahead of her impressive 2006 pace, in which she raised nearly $3.1 million.

With $185,000 cash on hand, a 16,000-strong contributor list, the unwavering support of the local netroots, and a top-notch campaign team forming around her, I can’t imagine why another Democrat would attempt to challenge her for the opportunity to face-off against Sheriff Reichert. (But then, I’m not sure why any sane person would put themselves through the rigors of a race like this.)

When final numbers are reported on the 15th, I’m guessing we’ll find Burner ahead of Reichert in cash-on-hand, and in the top tier of challengers nationally.

We can’t have any idea whatsoever about the fundraising prowess of other Democrats who might want to run in the 8th until they file as candidates. Which they’d better do pretty soon if they have even a remote prayer of a chance to do well in the primary. It’s only a little bit over 13 months until the Democratic voters on the Eastside choose their candidate.

Tempus fugit, guys, so stop the whispering campaigns and start actual campaigns if you’re going to do so.

“I’m working really hard to understand how President Bill Clinton’s actions act as justifcation for the righties. Read this fuckwads.

If your lame ass argument is that Bill Clinton was a bad President – which is what you say – and if your argument now is that the AWOL coward GW Bush is in someway comparable to Bill Clinton, what you are actually saying is that GW Bush is NO BETTER THAN CLINTON.

Does it hurt to be that stupid? I really want to know.

You’ve hit it on the nose. The rightwing fringefucks consider Clinton to be the personification of evil–indeed, he is the devil incarnate in their twisted little minds. Nonetheless, their justification for all of the Bushites’ sins is, always, “well, Clinton did it, too.” Methinks they never studied logic.”

As far as qualified, how qualified was George Washington, or Abraham Lincoln? Thomas Jefferson?

All you have to do is know right from wrong, and not sell your soul to corporate america…..

By the way, is Bush qualified? What was his qualifications? Total failure at every business venture he tried? Had to have his daddy’s friends bail him out over and over, and used his daddy’s good name to buy the Rangers. Looks pretty thin to me…

SeattleJew apparently doesn’t like Jim McDermott. He certainly doesn’t know much about Jim’s career prior to his service in the US Congress.

    From McDermott’s campaign website:

    A Career in Politics Begins

Jim McDermott’s first political campaign was in 1970, when he was elected to the Washington State House of Representatives from the 43rd Legislative District in Seattle. In 1974 he was elected to the Washington State Senate, a position to which he was re-elected three times.

And in 1980, Jim McDermott successfully challenged an incumbent Governor to become the Democratic Party gubernatorial nominee.

After 15 years of legislative service, Jim McDermott decided to leave politics in 1987, but he continued in public service as a Regional Medical Officer in the U.S. Foreign Service. Based in Zaire, he provided psychiatric services to Foreign Service, AID, and Peace Corps personnel throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

    Mr. McDermott Goes to Washington

When Washington State’s 7th Congressional District seat became open in 1988, Jim returned from Africa to run for the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected to the 101st Congress and is currently serving his 9th term in the House.

McDermott’s work as a psychiatrist was largely during his Navy assignment, treating PTSD in Long Beach CA, and his Foreign Service/AID work in Africa. As best I can tell, he has never been a civilian psychiatrist in Seattle.

He had a decade and a half as an elected official — State House, State Senate, losing campaign for governor — prior to his initial election to Congress in 1988.

That Jim McDermott did have a political career prior to going to Congress says exactly nothing about Darcy Burner (or Dave Reichert, for that matter). Members of Congress get elected with less experience than Burner, with more experience than McDermott, and everywhere in between. It’s not the resume, it’s the viewpoint and character and intellect (and fundraising ability).

PS. Who the hell is Steve Larsen?

    Bzzt! Wrong answers!

“Bill Clinton was impeached and disbarred because he lied to a grand jury in a failed attempt to conceal a pattern of predatory behavior in connection with an assault case that he settled for $800k.”

He was impeached AND ACQUITTED. Therefore, the charges against him were NOT TRUE. (At least, that’s how the Republican-controlled Senate so decided.) And, if you have evidence for his having committed “predatory behavior” or “assault”, then Paula Jones will be very mad at you for with-holding it from the court. Her failure to produce such evidence caused her case to collapse completely, thrown out of court as the frivolous waste of time and money that it was.

“Can you imagine being too fucking dishonest to be a lawyer? How low can you go?”

Lying to a criminal investigation, thus preventing us from punishing the criminals who harmed our national security. If you think such felonies deserve jail time, you’re not a good Republican.

SeattleJew, you really ought to do a bit of research before you post comments. It really helps to keep you from looking like quite so much of a fool.

    “no importnat Ctee jobs“?

You don’t think being the #4 Democrat on Ways and Means (the most powerful committee in the House) is “importnat”? You don’t think chairing one of the committee’s six subcommittees (Income Security and Family Support) is “importnat”? High-ranking members of W&M, such as Jim McDermott, usually don’t have other committee assignments.

In disparaging Jim’s experience in comment #24, you skip right from his time as a Navy psychiatrist (he was in Long Beach 1968-1970, BTW) to Congress. That’s just a few comments after I specifically mentioned his decade and a half in the Washington State Legislature and his two years with the Foreigh Service in Africa. But, of course, that doesn’t fit the preconceptions underlying your dislike of McDermott, so you find it easy to dismiss a significant portion of the man’s career history.

Your argument is that election ot a safe seat is a kind of coronation. I think a pol should work for his job.

The man has a lot of seniority but he ranks aomething like 115th in the Congress. (see links on my blog).

I do not downplay his experience as a state legislator … I have no idea, my only point was that such credentials are sometimes difficult to evaluate. Some groupies hang around politics for a long time and get not much done. What did he get done?

Most important to me though, is that JM is no at all visible on issues, other than the war, that are very important to this District. His endorsing VEEP IMPEACHMENT is fine by me, but I would feel better if I believed Jim was affecting more substantive issues.

So if you want me to be impressed tell me about Sunny Jim’s leadership on issues that affect us.

Fianlly, our demographics in Seattle are changin. Sunny Jim could easily face a Jim Webb Publican and be in big trouble.
