Comcast buys NBC, fires Olbermann

Anybody who says that media consolidation isn’t the greatest threat to our democracy, is either a liar, a fool… or somebody who wants a career in media.

  1. 1

    This is fucking outrageous.

Here we are folks…1984 twenty-seven years later.

Wait till the rethuglicans get their mitts (NO pun intended) on the Seanate…my god. We are doomed. This merger of NBC/Universal and Comcast will be as disasterous for Obama as signing the Communications Act of 1996 wqs for Bill Clinton.

Citizens United and now this. Fuck.

  2. 2

    Chris spews:

I lean conservative and I think comcast is far too big. It is unbelievable they keep growing and scary. I dont want to live in comcasterica.

  3. 3

    EvergreenRailfan spews:

Although I would probably not believe it myself, Comcast has allegedly said, wasn’t their idea. Although did GE ever put much undo influence on NBC News in the decades they owned NBC? Although every time they were covering a plane crash, and the engine was made by GE, they had to say that GE was their parent.

  4. 5

    EvergreenRailfan spews:

LD, the problem is people like you, that only want a one sided conversation, or none at all. It is not Freedom of Speech and of the Press only for Ultra-Conservatives and all others get squashed, just like it is not Freedom of Speech and of the Press for ultra-libs.

  5. 6

    EvergreenRailfan spews:

By the way, I don’t just watch Olbermann on MSNBC, I also like Maddow, sometimes Shultz if I can find it(they don’t podcast it), and Morning Joe, and I also go to CNN for Parker Spitzer, and Anderson Cooper, as well as Reliable Sources, and Olbermann crossed Howard Kuertz’s radar quite a lot. CNN has adopted a non-partisan policy it seems, so I doubt Keith Olbermann would go there.

  6. 7

    LD spews:

    5. No I would just like to see a bit of financial spending control from this idiot in chief. Drinking $400 a bottle wine with a dictator is not feeling the pain of the unemployed for D sure

  7. 8

    EvergreenRailfan spews:

Still, having a one-sided press is not the message we should be sending out. I know Clear Channel gets criticised by Liberals for squelching speech, but they have been the one that stuck by Randi Rhodes the most. ALthough I do fault them for the Minot Train Derailment fiasco, thankfully nobody was killed, but there were no emergency news messages carried over the radio stations there, because all of them were automated, run from another city. A result of Media Consoldiation. Clear Channel’s position though, was the city never connected the EAS to the stations, or they would have broken in with emergency information. The train was only carrying hazardous chemicals. Not like it was carrying what goes on at the Air Force Base outside of town. (Home to a wing of B-52s, and a wing of Minutemen).

Also, Maddow seems to be the only one at MSNBC giving coverage to an act of domestic terrorism in Spokane. at theMLK/Unity Day Parade, one of two parades scheduled for Downtown Spokane this week. The other was for Eastern Washington University’s National Championship Victory parade.(We came back from behind to beat Delaware, despite Delaware’s high-ranking chearleader)

    delbert spews:

    On the right you have:

    Fox News

    On the left:

WaPo, NYT, MSNBC, CNN, LA Times, HuffPo, et al.

Cry me a river about one-sided “news” coverage.

Olbermann was a useful idiot, who’s no longer useful, just an idiot.

  9. 11

    LOL spews:

@5: “the problem is people like you, that only want a one sided conversation, or none at all.”

Your complaining about one sided conversation is pretty rich, considering Kieth Olbermann never let an opposing view come anywhere near his set.

  10. 13

    EvergreenRailfan @5,

People like LD also secretly believe that the 2nd Amendment is also reserved only for conservatives.

  11. 14

Remember those “Hate Free Zone” signs liberals used to post in storefront windows around here? It’s a two way street. We are taking hate-filled, intolerant, and divisive extremist off the air.

That’s what you libs wanted, right? For places to be a hate-free zone? Well, we just made MSNBC a hate-free zone.

  12. 15

    CC "Bud" Baxter spews:

Your complaining about one sided conversation is pretty rich, considering Kieth Olbermann never let an opposing view come anywhere near his set.

It isn’t about opposing views (opinions) with each side being equal. It is about facts, which is what Olbermann dealt with. The main stream press has been corrupted with dirty campaign money flooding their coffers, so they have rewarded the right-wing nut jobs by giving their “opinions” equal footing with facts from the left. This is why the right continues to spew lie after lie (the health insurance reform is a “job killer” is the latest flat out lie by the right.) I’m sorry but lies and opinions based on bullshit are not “one of side of the story” that the press should give equal time to. We are all entitled to our own opinion, but we are not entitled to our own facts. While Limbaugh pulls facts right out of his butt, Olbermann backed his up with factual evidence.

  13. 16

    Winston Wolf spews:

olberman was a fucking wack-job opportunist.

and the little lefty lemmings came feeding at his trough every day and did nothing but make him rich.

    oh boo hoo.

  14. 17

    Winston Wolf spews:

besides, since maddow and olberman talk the same, sound the same, and look the same – whats the big deal anyway?

  15. 18

    Roger Rabbit spews:

@4 Yeah, I’m sure you’re looking forward to living in a country where everything the citizenry reads, sees, and hears is controlled by billionaires and dissent against the ruthless and corrupt corporatacry is mercilessly crushed. Welcome to North Korea.

  16. 20

    Roger Rabbit spews:

By the way, LD, it wasn’t liberals who presided over the outsourcing of America’s manufacturing jobs and got in bed with the Chinese. This started with Nixon and went downhill with Reagan and all the GOPers since … if Nixon hadn’t gone to Beijing there would be no Wal-Mart.

  17. 22

    Roger Rabbit spews:

@10 Are you serious? The airwaves are saturated with rightwing propaganda. Try to find a local radio or TV station that carries liberal commentary. You can’t.

  18. 23

    Roger Rabbit spews:

@14 “We are taking hate-filled, intolerant, and divisive extremist off the air.”

Fox fired Glenn Beck? And all the rest of their on-air staff?

  19. 24

I would just like to see a bit of financial spending control

Yeah he shouldn’t continue the policies of the last schmuck – two lousy wars with no end in sight. It’d help if the Congress allowed taxes to go up on the people who benefited the most from the last schmuck as well.

  20. 25

    YellowPup spews:

@10: Fox is it? Then I guess the whole AM dial, Washington Times, WSJ, Drudge, Newsmax, Cato and Heritage and the whole rightist think-tank establishment, and all that doesn’t really count.

The lamestream media thing just doesn’t ring true.

  21. 26

If GE didn’t want the blame for something like this then now would have been a great time to fire him.

Comcast, like Montgomery Burns, is interested in money. You either earn it or help them earn it. Obermann constructed a scattered audience, he was paid well, but they don’t need him anymore. They spin the signs around and fill the chair.

About CNN, they have lived with and the fired that fucker Lou Dobbs. I don’t see them flipping that coin over and spending it again.

What I think happens is that some other cable channel goes “Conan OBrian” (but not TBS, obviously) and separates itself from the rest of the cable crap.

Doesn’t every cable talk channel need a “Chelsea Lately”?

  22. 29

    Chris Stefan spews:

It will be interesting to see if any of the other cable channels pick up Olbermann. The most obvious one would be comedy central, though I suppose any number of channels would work.

Not that I necessarily see it happening, but it would be funny if Fox hired Olbermann and gave him way more rope to do his thing than NBC ever did.

Also will be interesting to see what if any pressure is put on Maddow. Though from all reports she is much better at getting along with management and still getting what she wants than Olbermann.

  23. 30

Zotz sez: Lobotomies for Republicans! spews:

Comcast, evil as they are, did NOT fire KO.

    NYT via Susan Gardner @DK:

For the last several weeks, Mr. Olbermann and the network have been in negotiations to end his successful run on MSNBC, according to executives involved in the talks who requested anonymity because the talks were confidential. The deal was completed on Friday, and Mr. Olbermann made the announcement on his final “Countdown” hours later.

KO left while the getting was good:

According to anonymous Comcast officials, the separation had nothing to do with the Comcast/NBC merger. In fact, the Times account claims the company is worried that it will be seen as exerting pressure to fire Olbermann.

One executive, who asked not to be identified because Comcast had instructed employees not speak about the situation, said the company dreaded the prospect of being blamed if Mr. Olbermann were to quit soon after the takeover.

The sad part is we won’t be “seeing” KO any time soon:

The executives involved in the discussions confirmed that the deal carries limitations for Mr. Olbermann in terms of when he can next work on television, though he will be able to take a job in radio or on any forum on the Internet. The deal also prohibits the host from commenting publicly on the deal, the executives confirmed.

Zotz sez: Lobotomies for Republicans! spews:

What really galls me about all this is: O’Donnell shuffles to 1st up in the remaining line-up (@5:00pm locally).

  25. 32

    Gerald spews:

Comcast has no operational control over nbc universal at this time. This post is very inaccurate. Olbermann has been working on a good exit contract for awhile now. Goldy: Don’t believe everything you read! ;).

  26. 33

    JC spews:

KO burns out wherever he goes. There are reports he wanted out @ MSNBC. He was almost canned a few months ago, there was already bad blood over the suspension. I’m no more confident comcast had anything to do w/ it than I would be Obama had something to do w/ it by appointing Immelt to a biz friendly post earlier in the day. If you are an executive, the biggest loose cannon in television is KO, as Randi Rhodes is a loose cannon to radio for example. KO doesn’t respect power, whether it be politically or his own employer(s)

  27. 36

    uptown spews:

Just don’t buy cable TV. Stop subsidizing FOX and the other crap cable news. Until they offer a la carte subscriptions, it’ll continue to be a scam to support existing channels and keep out anybody new.

Over the air digital TV is free and HD. All the local stations are adding back channels with more programming. Netflix is great. I miss some sports channels, but they have mostly been taking over by others and suck now (I’m looking at you FOX). If you need a digital antenna check out

  28. 37

    Chuck spews:

    “28. ratcityreprobate spews:

@26 I agree. I expect we will see Olberman with a program similar to Bill Maher’s.”

Bill who??? Oh I remember him now!

  29. 38

    Tondaleo Lipshitz spews:

Comcast may discover that the chowderheads that they want as viewers don’t (can’t) buy high ticket items.

They will buy gold-plated coins that spin for an hour ’cause they’re balanced like gyroscopes.

Can I interest any of our trolls in purchasing one (no, make that two, if you respond now) for $49.99? It’s of the twin towers. The towers are hinged and can work as a handy stand for proud display.

  30. 40

    olbyisacapitalist spews:

Exactly. Olberman was in a great position to negotiate a buyout so now he gets paid for doing nothing, the progressive way of life. Hopefully the terms of the buyout will be leaked. We’ll be shocked, shocked, shocked.
Painting Olberman as a victim of Comcast is ridiculous. His ratings were simply not going to get any better. He got out at the right time as he would never, ever come close to the ratings of O’Reilly, Hannity, Greta & Beck.
Olberman has an good attorney and finanical adviser. It was a good business move on his part.

  31. 41

    olbyisacapitalist spews:

Olbermann had a steep ratings dip dropping him to third place in the prime-time news feature slot behind FOX News’ Bill O’Reilly and Headline News’ Nancy Grace. Nancy Grace was beating Olby. By December 2010, Olbermann’s ratings had dropped 11 percent and in the coveted 24-54 demographic, they fell by 25 percent. In 2010, MSNBC suffered the worst declines of the top three networks (FOX, CNN and MSNBC). This is all about business & ratings, not progressive feelings. The facts seem to squash the emotional conspiratorial reaction of the far-left.

  32. 42

    olbyisacapitalist spews:

Olby’s best ratings were when he said he quit.
I think conservatives even watched as yet another leftist collapse like the Berlin Wall coming down hunk by hunk.

  33. 44

    riches to rags spews:

@38 Comcast may discover that the chowderheads that they want as viewers don’t (can’t) buy high ticket items

Alas, thanks to Goldy’s viewers he went from a business venture that required online donations in its final year to working for a small PRINT newspaper that will pay nothing more than a “modest” income. And this just a mere two years after the progressive “earthquake” that should have placed at least some wind behind his back!

  34. 45

Puddybud identifying rujax liberal scientist deathfrog and zotz as fools! spews:

This was all Keith’s choice. He has several times over the years said that he wants out of his contract. He never meant it until this year. He started lawyers negotiating twice this year. He stopped them in the spring. Then, about a month ago with the guidance of his new ICM team and a new LA manager (who were making zero $ on his current deal), he once again said he wanted to leave and this time they negotiated the full package.

Of course the slobbering fools like #1 agree with everything on the left they read.

  35. 47

    olbyisacapitalist spews:

    Team KoKo?
    Look at the blowhards ratings.
Those of you who watched him were in a growing minority. The guys vitrolic left-wing nonsense became boring for most true Democrats. Just the fools were left staring and slobbering at this inept windbag.

  36. 48

    Politically Incorrect spews:

Olbermann can go back to announcing baseball games. Heck, he’ll probably make a lot more money doing that!

  37. 49

    Winston Wolf spews:

time for goldy to eat more crow….again.

    nice “reporting” goldy.

next time get your facts straight….

  38. 50

    Winston Wolf spews:

notice that once his story is shown to be bunk, goldy is nowhere to be seen.

    too damn funny.

  39. 51

    assholes @45,50…

    That’s fucking horseshit.

It’s being reported that Comcast wanted Olberman out and that deal was done LAST WEEK.

Go fucking jerk off somewhere else.

  40. 52

    Scott spews:

Good riddance to Olbermann (bathtub boy). He leaves a legacy of lies, fraudulaent journalism, hypocrisy and cowardice. And his supporters can only respond with obscenities.

  41. 53

@52: Some, maybe. I’m happy to defend most of his work, and don’t even need to resort to ad hominems or foul language.

Saying that someone lied or was a fraud without providing any evidence is an ad hominem attack, and destroys any credibility you might otherwise have had. Plus, those who can’t spell shouldn’t throw bricks at those who can’t type without using bad words . . .

  42. 54

    Winston Wolf spews:

Oh man I love it….goldy posts some erroneous conspiracy theory bullshit that turns out to be bunk, and rujaxoff jumps all over like he was spoon-fed the troof.

Now when the real story comes out that olberman wanted out so he could pursue some other shit, goldy is stragely silent(nice “reporting” there mr. “journalist”), and rujaxoff cant bring himself to admit that he was all wrong

where are all the HA leftnuts that glommed onto goldy’s BS story now?????????
