The Seattle Times editorial board just loves the King County Sheriff’s Office’s crackdown on underage drinking, which resulted in 143 arrests or citations over the first weekend of its annual “Party Patrol.”
Every year, parents are nabbed in the act of willfully ignoring the party they know is being thrown in their absence. A few genuine idiots get caught trying to be the cool mom and dad who host an event and provide alcohol to minors.
Yeah, well, it was certainly a different era, but my mom and dad hosted a couple high school parties at our house where they provided the beer, and they certainly didn’t do it to be “cool.” I suppose you can argue with their judgment, but they were pragmatic enough to know that the kids where going to drink regardless of the party’s location, and they’d rather it happen under their close supervision.
Ironically, the local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving was started by the angry mother of a classmate of mine, after my parents called her to pick up her daughter, who was in no condition to drive home. It wasn’t the first or last time I saw this girl get drunk, but it was the only time I saw anyone prevent her from getting behind the wheel of a car.
Illegal, underage drinking only became more normalized in college, where the university actually threw a kegger for us during freshman orientation, and the RA’s made a point of explaining which local bars served undergraduates and which did not. Attitudes started shifting near the end of my senior year (1985) after a study revealing a serious binge-drinking problem on college campuses (duh-uh) was reinforced by a string of alcohol related campus tragedies.
Ominous headlines led to crackdowns by both local university and law enforcement officials… but that only drove the parties off campus. In one memorable example of the media hysteria of the time, a group of Rutgers students held a clandestine end-of-semester kegger outdoors in a wooded area near campus, where the metal keg was subsequently struck by lightning, killing one student and injuring several others. Newspaper headlines the next day trumpeted “another tragic alcohol related death” at a local campus.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an advocate of underage boozing—especially of the binge variety—but having been a teenager myself I seem to recall that kids will be kids, and I find it hard to believe that arresting a few teens or their parents is going to have much of a long term impact on the problem. I hate to get all libertarian on you (that’s Lee’s job) but it strikes me that law enforcement provides exactly the wrong approach to what is at its core a public health issue, and thus I’d much rather the Sheriff’s office focus their resources on apprehending and punishing drunk drivers, rather than waste their time on efforts that may draw flattering headlines, but really do little to address the larger societal problem.
We, as a nation, have an unhealthy attitude toward alcohol and other drugs, that leads to the sort of binge consumption that truly puts our youth at risk. And I don’t think an annual police crackdown, or a couple of rah-rah editorials, does much to promote a thoughtful discussion on the issue.
ewp spews:
I’ve traveled around the world and lived outside the US on multiple occasions, and nowhere have I experienced such an approach to youth and alcohol as practiced here. And from all the evidence I’ve seen we have the worst problem concerning binge drinking and alcohol abuse among teens. So either Americans are somehow genetically inferior to everyone else in regards to how they handle alcohol, or our policies concerning alcohol are to blame.
Rick D. spews:
Why am I not surprised that little davey goldstein’s parents contributed to his delinquency as a minor. What kind of fu&ktard parent would encourage their child to drink at a party they had a hand in planning?
I’ve been to plenty of shindigs where the parents didn’t know and that was half the fun of it. Only a freakin’ loser would ask mommy and daddy to ply their HS friends with alcohol and then send them on their merry way.
The more I learn about Goldy’s fu&ked up childhood, the more I understand his retarded political philosophy.
michael spews:
Shut up, Rick.
Mark1 spews:
@3 Michael:
Wow! That’s imaginative! You must be one of them fancy book-learned people.
michael spews:
Here’s the thing that bugs me about underage drinking laws:
If you’re a student at one of our public colleges and you get busted on campus the arrest is handled on campus by campus police, you have to attend a “Party Smart” class and your arrest is sealed from public view because it is part of you educational record.
If you’re not a student and you get busted at that same campus party your arrest is handled by the local courts, is public record and the penalties are quite a bit stiffer than attending a class.
michael spews:
@4
Nope, I’m a working class motherfucker.
Rick D. spews:
@5 ~ was there a point there?
I guess the moral to the story is to stay in school. Not that any of you HA trolls would know anything about morals.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Developing computer-steered cars would end drunk driving deaths, although that wouldn’t prevent drunken high schoolers and college students from falling out of windows or wrestling with bears.
We have the technology to eliminate human drivers. Why don’t we use it? Cost? We could save zillions by using computer-guided technology to pack cars closer together on congested arterials and eliminate traffic-stalling accidents. Installing the hardware to replace human drivers with computers can’t possibly cost as much as treating injuries, paying insurance premiums, or supporting a costly litigation system. And think of all the gas we’d save!
With computer-guided cars, we wouldn’t need laws against using cell phones in cars, either. Speaking of which, Washington drivers have about 10 more days to blab on their hand-held devices. Then, its Ticketsville if you get caught.
Rick D. spews:
@ 8 – Easy on the “wrestling with bears” comments there Bunny, Goldy might get sexually aroused with that kind of talk.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Well, I guess I disagree with you this time, Goldy. The law’s the law. If we can’t have rule of law in this country on the big stuff, let’s at least try to preserve it on the little stuff. The cops shouldn’t stop writing speeding tickets just because it doesn’t stop people from speeding. Law enforcement is an ongoing process. Besides, keggers have public impacts beyond the hazards of drunk driving. These kids go onto public property and often leave behind unsightly trash. Their noise may disturb neighbors. All too often, party crashers come along, and that often leads to fights. Youth keggers are a public nuisance all the way around. Yes, kids will be kids, but when it gets out of control the authorities should step in. That’s their job. There are reasons why we have drinking laws. Are they always rational? No, of course not. But the solution to that is modify the laws, not ask law enforcement to look the other way.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@2 “Why am I not surprised that little davey goldstein’s parents contributed to his delinquency as a minor.”

Drilling For Bullshit
Even the conservation business magazine Business Week is calling “bullshit” on Bush’s scheme to open environmentally sensitive areas to oil drilling. Bush’s own Energy Department points out that drilling in these areas wouldn’t have an impact on production or prices before 2030. And several Democratic congressmen have pointed out that Big Oil is active on only 20% of the offshore leases and 30% of the onshore leases they already hold, where there are no retrictions on drilling.

Roadkill @ 10:
Hey, Goldy! Someone is spoofing Bunny Boy’s nick again. That post makes WAY too much sense.
It is one thing to let your kid try a sip at dinner to take the mystery out of it — which, IIRC, is actually legal (though I don’t recall the specifics). It is a whole ‘nother thing to provide liquor for someone else’s kids. And “kids will be kids” is a bullshit excuse. Would that be your reaction if someone slipped your teen daughter Roofies?
The law is not a replacement for good parenting, but our self-indulgent culture has obliterated the concept of good parenting. And this applies to BOTH sides of the aisle. On one hand, you have the hippie parents who share their pot with their kids. On the other, you have the parents that ignore their kids because dad is too busy working and mom is trying to “find herself.”
If you can’t make your kids the top priority in your life, you have no business having ’em.
Rick D. spews:
How come YLB hasn’t chimed in yet?

@27 “I’m not a Democrat …”
Only a fool would brag about that. Your fellow trolls, not to mention GOP candidates, have more sense than you. They don’t want anyone to know they’re Republicans. Can’t say as I blame them.
“I’ll be in here the day after Dino Rossi and John McCain are elected …”
Only a damn fool would wish for that — a description which fits you perfectly.
Marvin Stamn spews:
Ouch. Sorry to hear your parents on this occasion neglected to do their job. Lucky for your parents you turned out pretty decent. One can only imagine what your parents would have done if you and your friends thought it was cool to torture and kill kittens & puppies.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@28 You forgot to mention the parents who set a poor example for their kids by being Republicans. Fortunately, many of those kids turn out to be Democrats anyway.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@32 “One can only imagine what your parents would have done if you and your friends thought it was cool to torture and kill kittens & puppies.”
That was George Sr.’s problem, and he didn’t do a very good job of dealing with it.
Marvin Stamn spews:
So no disagreement with being called a troll and not being smart enough to understand his jokes. Just that he doesn’t have that much at his disposal.
Marvin Stamn spews:
Do you have a link to that?
Or is this some of that made up bulls*&t that Puddy calls you on all the time.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Since when have wingnuts need links or sources? You guys spew all kinds of shit that was wallpaper 10 minutes ago. However, since you asked, I can’t post links anymore because Goldy’s new software thinks any “Roger Rabbit” post with a link in it is spam and kills it. And Goldy can’t fix that.
But I have a better suggestion for you: Do your own fucking research. Try googling “George Bush tortured animals” or “George Bush blew up frogs” and see what you come up with. Here’s a sample of what you’ll find:
“`We were terrible to animals,’ recalled Bush pal Terry Throckmorton, laughing. A dip behind the Bush home turned into a small lake after a good rain, and thousands of frogs would come out. `Everybody would get BB guns and shoot them,’ Throckmorton said. `Or we’d put firecrackers in the frogs and throw them and blow them up.’ … George W. Bush … was the leader among the boys who did it.”
Roger Rabbit spews:
I’m surprised you don’t know that Bush tortured small animals when he was a kid, Marvin. It’s common knowledge. Most people know about it. Everyone now knows that he ordered the torture of human beings, too.
Politically Incorrect spews:

JamesC spews:
Well, I guess I disagree with you this time, Goldy.
—————-
I second that. As parents of teenage daughters we struggled mightily with this issue. Our 17 year old came close to having her life implode on a number of occasions because of drinking, and she and we are extremely fortunate that she got through her high school years without something terrible happening. The teenage brain is still in the process of developing and maturing and good judgment is often lacking. Making alcohol more readily accessible to young people is bad social and public policy. My guess is the great majority of parents, especially with teenagers, would agree with this.
Marvin Stamn spews:
It appears Obama is swiftboating himself.

Spike spews:
I also disagree with Goldy’s approval of his parents’ decision in this area. One of the jobs of parents is to make it difficult for teens to get liquor, not to ease the acquisition of it. Teens may drink, but they have to sneak, cover-up, lie, etc. to get away with it; parents need to show disapproval and put hindrances in the way. Adolescent brains are not fully developed, as science tells us, and teens who drink before around 23 are far more likely to become alcoholics than those who wait.
Parents who shrug their shoulders and join in the delivery problem are abandoning their roles as models and moral leaders of their children. And those who throw parties and leave the homestead to the teens deserve whatever damage is done to their ming vases.
Daddy Love spews:
If we don’t throw kids in jail for normal adolescent activities, how will they learn?
Daddy Love spews:
44 S
I was listening, were you?
Goldy said specifically “law enforcement provides exactly the wrong approach to what is at its core a public health issue,” not that teens should be enouraged to drink or that their drinking should be tolerated. Just that the police are not the agency that is equipped to help a teenager realize their own motivations or to offer alternatives and treatment.
Also, Goldy in no way ever said that parents should “[abandon] their roles as models and moral leaders of their children,” just (again) that punishment alone does not solve problems.
Mr. Cynical spews:
One of my best friends was killed by a drunk driver 25 years ago. The 17 year-old kid who was the drunk driver was served alcohol by Parents like Goldy’s. It ruined the lives of my buddy’s parents, his wife, the family of the kid and the adults who provided the alcohol..
Perhaps I’m a bit jaded because of this personal experience…but parents who allow underage drinking in their home should be prepared to accept the fiscal responsibilty and mental anguish.
Goldy…it was a different time back then, but the consequences could be the same. Brutal.
Your folks aren’t in anyway heroes or to be admired for doing this Goldy. They do not know what will happen after the kids are lubed up at your parents house.
Raising 4 kids, it is a constant challenge for parents as kids try to become more & more grown-up tooooo soon. It takes a huge amount of time to keep track of them…but it’s not impossible when parents are in close communication.
Mr. Cynical spews:
With our kids we had clear, written rules so there would never, ever be a misunderstanding of actions & consequences..
If they or anyone ever drank in our car….or if they were in someone else’s car where there was alcohol…they would never drive our car again. PERIOD!
And they knew I was a mean enough bastard to follow thru on that one.
It was hard because they all had at least a few friends whose parents were overly permissive or didn’t give a shit at all.
Now that they are all grown-up, they appreciate the strickness even though they hated it at the time.
We checked with parents when they did sleep-overs…whatever.
It was hard work.
They were our kids.
We were responsible.
Goldy’s parents were dead wrong.
They were lucky.

No, I suggested that binge drinking is a serious problem on campuses, and that an annual end-of-semester crackdown and a handful of congratulatory editorials does little to address the problem, which is in the end a public health issue, not a criminal one.
All I argued for was a more thoughtful discussion. Guess I won’t get that here on HA until we move to registration system and perhaps some community moderation.
