Monday Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Monday, 8/22/22, 7:54 am

I am heading on vacation. So no more open threads from me this week or part of next. And this one is basically nonsense. I will avoid the heat wave (by being in a different hot place), and hopefully you can too.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

This article about nurses in the region becoming travel nurses has this line after many details “If this sounds unsustainable, it is.” Jeez. The pandemic really showed us what many of the problems with our health care system were in an emergency. And while COVID-19 is still a problem, we’re in a time when we can figure out longer term solutions for our nursing shortage.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And for God’s sake, get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

More. More abortion friendly policies at the local level. As many people in the article noted, more at the state and county level are good too. More. More. More.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Good morning. I was looking at the Olympic mountains on my walk this morning, and man is there no snow. I feel like in the past it didn’t go away this much. Maybe I am misremembering my youth?

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And if you aren’t vaccinated or boosted, get it already. What are you waiting for?

Oh hey. Seattle is being great on making sure to keep abortion access in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe. Thank goodness for them and the King County Council earlier this year. I don’t know what more there is to do, but keep up the good work.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

I don’t think there are good Republican elected officials. But Jaime Herrera Beutler did show courage during impeachment. While ultimately her vote for Speaker and for much of the Republican agenda is bad, her being replaced by Joe Kent, who came in ahead of her in the primary, would be a step down.

Fortunately, Democrats have a rad candidate, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. If you’re able to volunteer or donate, they could use your help.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

It’s going to be a hot day. So have a glass of ice water. If you can’t get ice because you’re at the office and they don’t have ice, just some cold water will do. Drink more than you think you need. Pee clear.

And while you’re at the sink, wash your hands. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Stay safe, Eastern Washington. There are too many fires, please eliminate several. Drugstores are still giving away N-95’s for COVID-19 (and hopefully you already had some), so you can use those for smoke. Pick some up.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Results! The Democrat will face off against the Republicans who voted for impeachment (but are still very much Republicans). The legislature looks more promising than it did. Maybe Democrats can even gain seats. We’ll have to see when the final results trickle in. And of course, we’ll still have to win in November.

Anyway, for goodness sake, wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Remember to get your ballot postmarked or dropped off by tomorrow. Light ballot for me, but there are some interesting legislative and Congressional races. If you drop off your ballot in Downtown Seattle, please note that the location has changed.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Do me a favor. Find the biggest cup nearby. Fill it up with ice water and just drink as much as you can.

Dope. Seattle just passed an ordinance to make us a sanctuary city for abortion. This means, for example, we won’t enforce warrants on abortion related crimes in places where it’s illegal. I certainly hope that this can be a model for other municipalities and for the state as a whole in the future.

Thanks to all of the Councilmembers who voted for it, and especially to Councilmember Sawant. I love when Seattle does bold things.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Stay cool everyone. Drink some water. Right now. More than you think you need. You’ll want to piss clear during the heat wave. But seriously, drink a nice cool glass of water.

And please wash your hands right now, and get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible. So bossy today.
