Monday Open Thread

I don’t understand video games or the economics around them. But goddam, the Activision Blizzard layoffs are brutal. If these giant companies can’t keep their employees when the economy is strong, and they’re making money hand over fist, it doesn’t bode well. In tech, I hope that they aren’t stupid enough to think that something something AI is going to replace employees.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now and get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

– Cops using excessive force against protesters should be a bigger deal than just the cost of doing business.

– I didn’t like the results of the Seattle City Council elections. So, sure, a moderate was going to fill the vacant seat. You have to respect what people voted for in November. Wait!

The police officer who killed Jaahnavi Kandula was rejected by the Tucson police department. I don’t know, guys. Seems like maybe not the ideal situation. Without knowing why I am a bit worried about saying they should not have accepted him. But it seems like a red flag.

Anyway, please wash your hands. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Gosh. I do not like the work in the transit tunnel. It’s not normally a part of my commute and already I have just stood in the tunnel waiting too long, or I took the shuttle. It’s also just dusty and gross.

Maintenance is necessary and it’s going to be inconvenient. Still, so are complaints. At least it will be done in a few weeks.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

– Yuck. Stay safe if you’re driving in Western Washington and don’t drive if you don’t have to.

– After the Crosscut articles about Downtown revitalization, they’re moving. First Hill is great, and still the urban core. I know.

– I don’t watch Fargo, but I am glad/horrified that it’s relevant.

– Losers for City Council, I guess.

– Listen up. Get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 1/10/24, 8:00 am

– Stay warm everyone. Put on gloves before you think you’ll need them. Put on an extra layer. Stay safe.

– High County News has a union.

– Split them lots.

– Not particularly optimistic about better bike infrastructure in Seattle.

– Guys, you don’t have to put advertising on everything.

– Boeimg’s success is still so tied up with the success of the Northwest, that it’s heartbreaking to see how bad the product is. Maybe they should have spent less time breaking the unions and more time focused on quality?

– Anyway, please wash your hands right now and get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

It’s the first day of the Washington legislative session. I would advise you to see what bills a lobbying group whose goals you support is pushing, or a general organization like Fuse. And find a bill or two and write your legislators about it.

Many organizations will also have lobby days or other ways to get involved. These are a hoot for citizen groups, and I would encourage you to sign up if you can.

And please, wash your hands right now and get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

– Oh cool. People are biking on the Fremont Bridge in 2023. Keep it going in the new year.

– Fuse has some bill info and how to contact your legislator for the upcoming session.

– Find it Fix It doesn’t work for City Council.

– It stinks about the arson at the Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple. Here’s a donation page, if you can help.

– It’s important to assess how Downtown is doing, but maybe the success of a grocery store in walking distance to Pike Place isn’t the best example?

– Molbak’s closing is going to be a hit to the community.

– Yay for building emissions standards.

Flat fares for Link light rail starting in the fall of 2024. I think this makes sense, especially as the line gets longer and longer. But I guess it would be annoying if you only live one or two stops away from your work and are paying yourself.

I don’t know, my work pays for my Orca Card. I won’t really notice it one way or the other. No tapping off.

– Come on, Seattle. Cutting LEAD funding. Gross.

All of my friends who get into foraging get really into foraging. Glad there are groups doing it ethically.

– Bye Kevin.
