A history of veterans

I just finished listening to KUOW’s broadcast of a special Veteran’s Day edition of BackStory… one of my favorite public radio shows. The episode, “Coming Home: A History of War Veterans,” along with links to additional material is available from the BackStory website, or you can just listen to it below.

    Poster Child spews:

I listened to that too – Fantastic.

I loved the polite refusal to argue about slaves fighting for the confederacy.

As much as I like my KUOW routine, when it gets a bit mixed up on holidays I often find the substitute programming most compelling.

Of course I, er, always switch over if you’re subbing on AM radio…(more accurately, I always remember to a bit too late.)

  2. 4

    Steve spews:

@2 And the slut of Dutch Harbor, no doubt. An old friend of mine was five-time Dem mayor of Dutch Harbor and once employed Sarah as a young slut, er, woman to suck, er, clean fish, or whatever it was she did there.

  3. 5

    Roger Rabbit spews:

Hey all you young, gorgeous, liberal girls! If you see a veteran today, KISS HIM!! All I ask is that you don’t pick him up by his ears and wipe the lipstick off his snoot when you’re done kissing me.

  4. 6

    Roger Rabbit spews:

The Obama administration announced a $3.2 billion program to help homeless veterans today. Veterans comprise about a fourth of America’s homeless population.

These homeless veterans didn’t abruptly appear after Obama took office. They’ve been there all along; but the previous administration ignored them.

And do you have any doubt that chest-beating Republicans who tell us to “support the troops” will characterize this spending as “waste, fraud, and abuse”?

  5. 7

    Puddybud Remembers Progressives Forget spews:

Yeah Roger Dumb Bunny regarding homeless veterans,

Complain like you do all the time but how often do you roll down your window and give him/her $5 or so and thank him/her for their service?

    Yeah didn’t think so schmuck!

  6. 8

    Puddybud Remembers Progressives Forget spews:

And another thing Roger Dumb Bunny,

GWB inherited a whole bunch of homeless veterans from Clinton. Puddy found stats way back from 1994.

    See ya dumb bunny!

  7. 9

    Steve spews:

@7 “how often do you roll down your window and give him/her $5 or so and thank him/her for their service”

Do you believe every handwritten sign someone at an intersection waves at you? You might stop by the Barrel Tavern some evening and listen to some of those guys laughing about how they played you for $5.

  8. 10

    Puddybud Remembers Progressives Forget spews:

    Steve,

That’s between Barrel Tavern patrons and God. God knows my heart and what my actions were for. They’ll have some explaining to do when their judgment happens.

Like Puddy said Steve, all Roger Dumb Bunny is… is a chronic complainer with loose facts.

  9. 12

    Puddybud Remembers Progressives Forget spews:

    Puddy seconds @11’s sentiments.

And a big thank you Mark, Rob & KLake. It’s tough being a conservative veteran around HA Libtardos.

  10. 14

    proud leftist spews:

    Puddy,
Let’s see, I wonder which contribution will go further toward ameliorating homelessness among veterans, a $3.2 million targeted grant from the federal government or the occasional, random handing over of a few bucks to someone on the street claiming to be a veteran. I don’t know, Pud, it’s a tough question. What do you think?

  11. 15

    ArtFart spews:

To those who went and fought in behalf of the rest of us, regardless of the details of the circumstances or the outcome, I offer a heartfelt salute. My hat’s off to you.

To those wingnuts who’ve used “support the troops” as a way to justify their inanity, I offer my middle finger.

  12. 17

    Puddybud Remembers Progressives Forget spews:

    Proud Leftist,

Again you missed the point. Isn’t this an every day occurrence?

Puddy has no problem with helping those who fought for us. Puddy has a big problem with Roger Dumb Bunny and his inane stupid comments after that! So Puddy reminded the old rodent how he drives past those who have homeless signs because he’s better than they are. He fucks bunnies (in his dreams)!

Puddy realizes it’s a tough comment. What do you think? Ohhh, that went supersonic right over your head!

  13. 18

    bJav spews:

    @14 What do you think?

That you’re a dope asking inane questions. A big chunk of these people will be vets or just plain people in need, and a $3.2 million targeted grant won’t do squat for +99.9999 percent of them, who need the money for their next meal. This isn’t either/or. Both are needed, for different reasons. Try living on the street for awhile and generosity takes on a meaning that few people will ever appreciate.

And just because money is in the form of a grant, it doesn’t ensure it’s all put to good use. That laugh’s on you.

  14. 19

    proud leftist spews:

    18
Where do you people come from? Do you seriously equate the value of haphazard handouts on the street to those with a hat out to the value of a $3.2 billion dollar grant? Sure, not all the grant money will go to its best and most efficient use, but I’ll guess your paycheck doesn’t either. You wingies live in a magic land where fantasy is your bible. I’d find you funny but then the sad reality that your vote counts the same as mine hits me.

  15. 21

    bJav spews:

@19 Where do you come from

Better yet, where do you come from? @14 it’s $3.2 million, now it’s $3.2 billion? If you push it up to $3.2 trillion – I suppose that’s next – who’s going to argue with you?

And yes, I more than equate street handouts to $3.2 million – your figure – you cheap dope.

  16. 22

    proud leftist spews:

    21
Roger’s post at 6 above accurately reports $3.2 billion. My first post included a typo. I apologize. I suspect your opinion doesn’t change, however.

  17. 23

    Marvin Stamn spews:

    19. proud leftist spews:
$3.2 billion dollar grant? Sure, not all the grant money will go to its best and most efficient use,

But bush isn’t president anymore. Obama told us he was ready on day one.

Why shouldn’t all the money go to its best and most efficient use? Why wouldn’t that be the objective in a non-republican administration?

If you know already there’s going to be waste and fraud, shouldn’t that be reformed first?

The article doesn’t list her political party, which we all know means she is a democrat, the mayor stole at least $1,500 in gift cards donated to her office for use by needy families. Nice.
Say, did that boys charity ever get its money back from air america?

  18. 24

Proud To Be An Ass spews:

Just heard that Obama has ‘rejected’ all alternatives presented by Defense Dept. re Afghanistan…..you folks hear anything?

  19. 25

    ArtFart spews:

“If you know already there’s going to be waste and fraud, shouldn’t that be reformed first?”

Dear Lord…if only that question had been seriously considered before we went to war in Iraq…among other things.

  20. 31

    EvergreenRailfan spews:

MIAs go back to pretty much the history of war in the United States. I remember hearing a story a few months ago about the remains of a missing soldier from the Civil War being found, and laid to rest. When I first heard of it, I was surprised that there were MIAs from the Civil War, but then again, this was before all the modern identification techniques we have, so it was possible.

Sorry folks. The truth can be brutal. I have a kind heart, but not a kind mind. It’ll be like Vegas.

More like a weak mind! Like your hatred of blacks 24×7? Vegas, another of your zero sum games like oil?

You can name morph, butt you cannot hide from Puddy.

  22. 34

    Steve spews:

Oh, wait, you’re a wingnut troll – all you have going for you are your delusions and outright lies.

  23. 35

    Puddybud Remembers Progressives Forget spews:

    Steve,

You are a really big dummy ya know. Keep it up and your be the mortar that allows the dumb brick to sit upon the dumb cinder block! That moron with the “Mr. Always Right Constitution Interpreter and Flag Worshiper” is headless lucy. In fact he has over 37 names now he HNMMT to.

Somehow Puddy remembers how you approached headless and his 24×7 comments and you never followed up. Well it’s par for the course being an HA Libtardo. Stupid is as Stupid does.

Butt then again, the little details of life are passing you by and you’re missing them. You created and daily taste test Steve’s Stupid Solution. It dulls the mind. And those daily goat farm attacks on Marvin isn’t helping your arguments either.

So Puddy suggests something. Trace back to some headless posts two weeks ago. You’ll see the same stupid .gif file in his name.

See how easy that was Steve. Puddy realizes Stupid is your middle name.

As Paul Harvey Sr sez… Good Day SSS.

I will offer may annual challenge again, to both libs and cons ..

where will you bge next 4th?

We try to be some place that clebrates America, Fort Lewis has a great celebration.

  25. 37

    Steve spews:

Quit being so delusional, or as I suspect, such an outright liar. Headless wrote something about not wanting to around blacks 24×7. Where’s the hate or racism in that statement? You turn it into a statement of 24×7 hatred of blacks. Who the fuck can stand being around anybody 24×7? How about you? Can you stand to be around latino immigrants 24×7? Can you stand to be around transvestites 24×7? Can you stand being around whites 24×7? You’re the hater, Puddy. Admit it and quit projecting your hate onto headless.

Yeah, and you’re a fucking liar. You lie so easily. False witness. Good luck with squaring that with your so-called Christian faith. Or do you lie about that too?

  26. 38

    Puddybud Remembers Progressives Forget spews:

Steve, Steve Steve, do you need to see headless’ racism comments again? Do we need to go down that road or has Steve’s Stupid Solution really dulled your senses? And I’m a liar when you can’t remember the last time you shit your pants over accusing Puddy of not chastising Mark Foley?

You truly don’t remember your question to headless? Are you that possessed with 24 hour moronic memory malady?

  27. 39

    Steve spews:

Post the headless comment on the Fake News thread and we’ll all see how you resort to lying at the drop of a hat. Post it here too. What a creep you are. You lie with one breath and crow about what a great Christian you are with the next. You don’t need to square that with me or headless. Ultimately, your accounting for these non-stop lies will be with God. Or is God another 24×7 issue with you? In other words, do you hate God too?

Marvin @ 23: “The article doesn’t list her political party, which we all know means she is a democrat, the mayor stole at least $1,500…”

Hey, I don’t know if she is a Democrat or a Republican, and don’t care. Obviously you don’t know, you just find it convenient to assume she’s a Democrat. If she stole money intended to go to charity, send her to jail – regardless of which party she belongs to, or none at all.

But since you are already into name-calling mode, I’ll point out a little brouhaha in Knoxville, Tennessee, where a local Republican to the state legislature (Steve Campfield, R-Knoxville) had to be ejected from Neyland Stadium (home of the Univ. of Tennessee Volunteers). Seems he had to be asked by a policeman to remove his mask (they aren’t allowed in the stadium), then the officer found that he was sitting in the wrong section (B section, right at field level, instead of JJ section, which is upper nosebleed area in upper endzone. He was also uncoperitive and combative towards the officers.

Having attended UT as an undergraduate, I remember the nosebleed areas near the endzone were reserved for student tickets, which were very cheap at the time. Because they are so cheap, you had to show a student ID along with your ticket upon entering the stadium. This led to quite an exchange effort as students tried to get “passable” I.D.s from other students in order to get their boyfriends/girlfriends/buddies from high school into the game. But it all made for a fun game experience, as the stadium was always full.

Assuming the same system is still in effect, it appears that this Republican politician illegally obtained a student ticket and ID to get into the stadium, probably wore the mask so his age or recognizable face wouldn’t cause more scrutiny of the ID at the gate, and then became offended when a policeman told him he had to remove his mask.

TN Rep. Stacey Campfield removed from UT game for mask

But Campfield isn’t your run-of-the-mill politician – he appears to be a certified wingnut. He sent out e-mails during his recent campaign falsly claiming that his Democratic opponant had been arrested for multiple drug offenses (the opponant has sued him for libel). And a number of his tenants have complained about his houses having multiple code violations which he has repeatedly refused to remedy (Campfield blamed the media for airing the complaints). Finally, Campfield sponsored legislation which would have required the coroner to issue death certificates for every abortion conducted in the state.

    rhp6033 spews:

By the way, since this is a topic about Veteran’s Day…

The St. Louis Rams are holding a late “Veteran’s Day” promotion. They want to sell out tickets to this Sunday’s game by the today (Thursday) to prevent it from being blacked out locally. That’s some 20,000 tickets which still need to be sold.

No, they aren’t letting veterans into this Sunday’s game for free – perhaps that wouldn’t count towards the league’s blackout rules. But they are promising that for each ticket purchased, they will donate a ticket to military personnel for some unstated game in the future.

Which brings about the question from one sportswriter familiar with the Rams:

“Haven’t our men and women in uniform suffered enough?”

My guess is that Campfield will be the next Palin/Beck/Hannity hero. The wingnut wing of the GOP (which represents about 80% of the membership) will promote him for those views much like they promoted Hoffman in NY 23. Personal failings don’t matter to wingnuts so long as a politician strongly adheres to the right’s lunatic orthodoxy.

  32. 44

    rhp6033 spews:

    PL @ 43:

Correction: It looks like I got the first name wrong – it’s Stacey Campfield, not Steve Campfield.

Yep, he’ll just claim it’s a leftist media conspiracy against him. Which when you are dealing with most Tennessee newpapers, is a hilarious statement on it’s face.

I did a quick search, and he’s all over the place – he sponsored 75 of the 102 bills in the legislature last year, none of them passing. He attacked a bi-partison budget agreement, calling all Republicans who voted for it “Obama Republicans”. He asked to be added to the Black Caucus (despite being obviously white and read-headed), for reasons which may be known only to him. He added his name to a “Birther” lawsuit brought by Orely Taitz.

Even the Republicans in the Tennesse Capital think he’s a bit crazy. When asked to respond to the “Obama Republicans” charge, the Deputy Speaker of the House (a Republican) said:

“….it’s typical Campfield. He’s just Campfield. I do not take it seriously.”

    Roger Rabbit spews:

@7 “Complain like you do all the time but how often do you roll down your window and give him/her $5 or so and thank him/her for their service? Yeah didn’t think so schmuck!”

$5.00 is a hard number to meet, pudling, because usually life’s exigencies don’t work out to such nice, neat, round numbers.

Here’s what happened when I went to Applebee’s yesterday afternoon to get my free steak dinner. It was pretty crowded (no surprise there) and I was by myself, so when my turn to get a table came out, I told the server to seat another veteran with me.

In retrospect, it’s clear the server didn’t select that veteran but rather the Great Mother Rabbit Spirit (aka God) did, because that veteran needed my help.

He’s unemployed and having a hard time getting a job because of a minor legal problem involving a scrape with a tow truck driver. I explained to him what he needs to do to get that incident off his record so he can pass a background check. I also helped him clean up his resume. A probably reason why he hasn’t been getting interviews is because he told prospective employers he was “fired” from a previous job when, in fact, he was laid off. He thought “fired” and “laid off” are the same thing, but I explained to him that employers don’t read his application that way.

Finally, dear pudling, although his dinner (like mine) was free, he had a wife at home (like I do), so I not only paid for a takeout dinner for Mrs. Rabbit but I also paid for another takeout dinner for his wife. In addition, I pulled some cash out of my wallet and gave it to him so he could go to the courthouse and make the copies he needs to take care of his legal problem. (They charge 25 cents a page.)

I didn’t add it all up, but I know it wasn’t $5.00, or for that matter, $5. It came to something over 10 bucks but I can’t tell you the exact amount and it isn’t a round figure.

Oh year, before I forget, this veteran told me he’s a Born Again Christian and had been praying for a Miracle. His faith is very strong and he was expecting the Miracle, but he didn’t expect it to show up with long pink ears. Clearly, him being seated at my table was Meant To Be, an act of Divine Intervention. But Miracles don’t always look like what you think they will, and you to be able to recognize the Miracle when It appears, or you might miss it.

So, puddycrite, what did you do to help a veteran yesterday?
