The Obama administration announced a $3.2 billion program to help homeless veterans today. Veterans comprise about a fourth of America’s homeless population.
These homeless veterans didn’t abruptly appear after Obama took office. They’ve been there all along; but the previous administration ignored them.
And do you have any doubt that chest-beating Republicans who tell us to “support the troops” will characterize this spending as “waste, fraud, and abuse”?

A big chunk of these people will be vets or just plain people in need, and a $3.2 million targeted grant won’t do squat for +99.9999 percent of them, who need the money for their next meal. This isn’t either/or. Both are needed, for different reasons. Try living on the street for awhile and generosity takes on a meaning that few people will ever appreciate.
And just because money is in the form of a grant, it doesn’t ensure it’s all put to good use. That laugh’s on you.

I remember hearing a story a few months ago about the remains of a missing soldier from the Civil War being found, and laid to rest. When I first heard of it, I was surprised that there were MIAs from the Civil War, but then again, this was before all the modern identification techniques we have, so it was possible.

But since you are already into name-calling mode, I’ll point out a little brouhaha in Knoxville, Tennessee, where a local Republican to the state legislature (Steve Campfield, R-Knoxville) had to be ejected from Neyland Stadium (home of the Univ. of Tennessee Volunteers). Seems he had to be asked by a policeman to remove his mask (they aren’t allowed in the stadium), then the officer found that he was sitting in the wrong section (B section, right at field level, instead of JJ section, which is upper nosebleed area in upper endzone. He was also uncoperitive and combative towards the officers.
Having attended UT as an undergraduate, I remember the nosebleed areas near the endzone were reserved for student tickets, which were very cheap at the time. Because they are so cheap, you had to show a student ID along with your ticket upon entering the stadium. This led to quite an exchange effort as students tried to get “passable” I.D.s from other students in order to get their boyfriends/girlfriends/buddies from high school into the game. But it all made for a fun game experience, as the stadium was always full.
Assuming the same system is still in effect, it appears that this Republican politician illegally obtained a student ticket and ID to get into the stadium, probably wore the mask so his age or recognizable face wouldn’t cause more scrutiny of the ID at the gate, and then became offended when a policeman told him he had to remove his mask.

But Campfield isn’t your run-of-the-mill politician – he appears to be a certified wingnut. He sent out e-mails during his recent campaign falsly claiming that his Democratic opponant had been arrested for multiple drug offenses (the opponant has sued him for libel). And a number of his tenants have complained about his houses having multiple code violations which he has repeatedly refused to remedy (Campfield blamed the media for airing the complaints). Finally, Campfield sponsored legislation which would have required the coroner to issue death certificates for every abortion conducted in the state.
By the way, since this is a topic about Veteran’s Day…
The St. Louis Rams are holding a late “Veteran’s Day” promotion. They want to sell out tickets to this Sunday’s game by the today (Thursday) to prevent it from being blacked out locally. That’s some 20,000 tickets which still need to be sold.
No, they aren’t letting veterans into this Sunday’s game for free – perhaps that wouldn’t count towards the league’s blackout rules. But they are promising that for each ticket purchased, they will donate a ticket to military personnel for some unstated game in the future.
Which brings about the question from one sportswriter familiar with the Rams:

I did a quick search, and he’s all over the place – he sponsored 75 of the 102 bills in the legislature last year, none of them passing. He attacked a bi-partison budget agreement, calling all Republicans who voted for it “Obama Republicans”. He asked to be added to the Black Caucus (despite being obviously white and read-headed), for reasons which may be known only to him. He added his name to a “Birther” lawsuit brought by Orely Taitz.
Even the Republicans in the Tennesse Capital think he’s a bit crazy. When asked to respond to the “Obama Republicans” charge, the Deputy Speaker of the House (a Republican) said:
“….it’s typical Campfield. He’s just Campfield. I do not take it seriously.”

$5.00 is a hard number to meet, pudling, because usually life’s exigencies don’t work out to such nice, neat, round numbers.
Here’s what happened when I went to Applebee’s yesterday afternoon to get my free steak dinner. It was pretty crowded (no surprise there) and I was by myself, so when my turn to get a table came out, I told the server to seat another veteran with me.
In retrospect, it’s clear the server didn’t select that veteran but rather the Great Mother Rabbit Spirit (aka God) did, because that veteran needed my help.
He’s unemployed and having a hard time getting a job because of a minor legal problem involving a scrape with a tow truck driver. I explained to him what he needs to do to get that incident off his record so he can pass a background check. I also helped him clean up his resume. A probably reason why he hasn’t been getting interviews is because he told prospective employers he was “fired” from a previous job when, in fact, he was laid off. He thought “fired” and “laid off” are the same thing, but I explained to him that employers don’t read his application that way.
Finally, dear pudling, although his dinner (like mine) was free, he had a wife at home (like I do), so I not only paid for a takeout dinner for Mrs. Rabbit but I also paid for another takeout dinner for his wife. In addition, I pulled some cash out of my wallet and gave it to him so he could go to the courthouse and make the copies he needs to take care of his legal problem. (They charge 25 cents a page.)
I didn’t add it all up, but I know it wasn’t $5.00, or for that matter, $5. It came to something over 10 bucks but I can’t tell you the exact amount and it isn’t a round figure.
Oh year, before I forget, this veteran told me he’s a Born Again Christian and had been praying for a Miracle. His faith is very strong and he was expecting the Miracle, but he didn’t expect it to show up with long pink ears. Clearly, him being seated at my table was Meant To Be, an act of Divine Intervention. But Miracles don’t always look like what you think they will, and you to be able to recognize the Miracle when It appears, or you might miss it.
So, puddycrite, what did you do to help a veteran yesterday?
