I’ve been moved of late by the donations matching the $12.97 donation of four kids who held a lemonaide/cookie sale for Rachel. The individual donations to Rachel’s charity are usually modest, averaging only $40, and many of them are just kids busting open their piggy banks. But they’ve added up to something wonderful and Rachel’s last birthday wish will change the world for the better, if only by just a little bit.
I pray that there’s a heaven if only so that Rachel can know what her wish has done to restore a faith in humanity in so many people across the globe, including myself. And I pray that she knows that her selfless birthday wish has made a huge difference in the lives tens of thousands of children for whom clean drinking water was only a dream.

“How Rob McKenna is like Santorum
by Darryl, 06/08/2011, 5:56 PM
For what it is worth, the American Anthropological Association—you know, the folks who study humans and their cultures, cross-culturally and historically—take exception to both Santorum’s and McKenna’s narrow, conservative view of marriage and family:
The results of more than a century of anthropological research on households, kinship relationships, and families, across cultures and through time, provide no support whatsoever for the view that either civilization or viable social orders depend upon marriage as an exclusively heterosexual institution. Rather, anthropological research supports the conclusion that a vast array of family types, including families built upon same-sex partnerships, can contribute to stable and humane societies.”
So Professor, show us those cross-cultural studies that support same-sex marriage, you must have numerous examples of Asian and African cultures where same-sex marriage is legal. It couldn’t possibly be limited to Western liberalism, could it? You wouldn’t falsify the research, would you?

Libya Update
Republicans seem to be against overthrowing fascist dictators who kill Muslims (see, e.g., GOP opposition to Clinton shutting down the Serbian genocide in Kosova without a single U.S. combat death, and GOP opposition to getting rid of Libya’s Gadhafi — a thug who ordered the destruction of a U.S.-flagged airliner with 190 AMERICAN citizens aboard), so they probably won’t like this, but Libyan rebels have captured a key coastal city and launched an attack against Tripoli itself.
Gadhafi has proved remarkably resilient, so I hesitate to predict his imminent demise, but — with the help of NATO air support, and Inshallah, (Allah willing) — Libya will be free. Long live the Arab Spring!
Of course, our Republican friends don’t necessarily want freedom for Libyans, or any other Muslims; they’d just as soon that whole crowd were suppressed. But whether they like it or not, the despots of the Arab world are falling like dominoes, and Gadhafi’s fall is inevitable. His government, sustained by the oil money that pays mercenaries, has a limited shelf life. Mercenaries always abrogate their contracts when the employer is on the verge of bankruptcy — you can buy a trigger finger, but loyalty can’t be purchased at any price.
I know some of my liberal friends are against the death penalty in all cases. I hope they’ll understand that my difference of opinion on this is an honest one. I’m compelled to admit that I’m not as possessed of arrogance or self-assurance as our friend Politically Incorrect gives me credit for; I have much self-doubt. Perhaps my emotions get the better of my intellect at times. That said — let’s get it out of the way — nevertheless I take satisfaction from the fact that Mussolini’s enemies hung that bastard, and on an admittedly visceral plane, I hope Gadhafi stretches a rope from a lamp post in downtown Tripoli within the next week or so. I simply feel, at a gut level, that motherfucker has it coming to him. And that the world will be a better place without him, just as it is a better place without Saddam (another Muslim killer).*
[* We have a problem here. Our wingnut friends were big cheerleaders for the war that killed Saddam. (Never mind the 4,000+ AMERICAN lives that went *poof!* to solve what was essentially an Arab Problem.) This is out of character for them. After all, he was killing Muslims, and our wingnut friends are in favor of that, are they not? Something’s out of kilter here. As Lucy would say, they’ve got some ‘splaining to do.]
So, yeah, I hope the rebels win, but not only that, I hope they kill that motherfucker. He’s a killer, a terrorist, a murderer of innocent Americans, and he deserves to be killed. As far as I’m concerned, Lockerbie was an act of war, and dictators who start wars aren’t necessarily entitled to trials (see, e.g., Hitler), although we’ll give them one out of our own conscientious impulses (see, e.g., the Nazis we gave fair trials at Nuremberg before hanging ’em).
Yeah, I think there are people who deserve to be dead, and need to be dead, and I also think Gadhafi is one of those. Disagree with me if you wish. We’re all friends here, we can have honest disagreements about things. I hope that bastard swings from a lamp post, and the quicker the better. But that’s just me. I guess that just comes from the fact I used to be a Republican before I wised up and became a liberal.
Oh, and by the way, charges against a 19-year-old kid who ran over a 49-year-old black guy with his car have been upgraded to capital murder and a hate crime, which means the kid could get the death penalty. I say give him a fair trial and let’s see where it goes from there — in principle, I’m not against executing racists who kill people for being black in all cases, it depends on the facts of the case.

Perry’s Culture Of Corruption
The closer the media looks at Perry’s Texas, the more it smells.
“Over three terms in office, Mr. Perry’s administration has doled out grants, tax breaks, contracts and appointments to hundreds of his most generous supporters and their businesses. And they have helped Mr. Perry raise more money than any politician in Texas history, donations that have periodically raised eyebrows but, thanks to loose campaign finance laws and a … political culture dominated in recent years by Republicans, have only fueled Mr. Perry’s ascent. ‘Texas politics does have this amazing pay-to-play culture,’ said Harold Cook, a Democratic political consultant.”
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44.....ork_times/
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Last week, we learned the jobs Perry brags about are government jobs supported by big-gummint spending. This week, we’ve learned that Perry keeps the Texas GOP well-funded by trading taxpayer money for campaign donations.
We’ll see how long this presidential contender stays in the race. So far, he hasn’t survived the first week of media scrutiny.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Republicans aren’t against all taxes. They’re only against taxing the rich. They want to raise taxes on the working poor:
“Many of the same Republicans who fought hammer-and-tong to keep the George W. Bush-era income tax cuts from expiring on schedule are now saying a different ‘temporary’ tax cut should end as planned. …
“The … extension they oppose … helps the 46 percent of all Americans who owe no federal income taxes but who pay a ‘payroll tax’ on practically every dime they earn. …
“‘It’s always a net positive to let taxpayers keep more of what they earn,’ says Rep. Jeb Hensarling, ‘but not all tax relief is created equal for the purposes of helping to get the economy moving again.’ The Texas lawmaker is on the House GOP leadership team.”
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44218846/ns/politics/
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Yeah, right — it’s okay to tax away wages that buy food because starvation will force low-wage workers to work second and third jobs (at even lower wages), which boosts employment.
This makes abundantly clear what Republicans are all about: Protecting special privileges for the rich and hating on America’s working poor.
What a bunch of asshats. Why would anyone vote for these cretins?
Liberal Scientist wonders why Republicans hate America spews:
@35
Not the least bit surprising.
Republicanism is a form of feudal, quasi-fascist keptocracy.
It’s all about sequestering power in as few hands as possible, and keeping it in a circle of cronys and lackeys. It’s about personal power and wealth, and fucking over the community in general.
These people are fiends. And worse, the yahoos who the fiends convince to vote against their own self interest, usually because of racism or religionism, or some other form of us-versus-them and fear.
Liberal Scientist wonders why Republicans hate America spews:
I was watching “To Kill a Mockingbird” last night – what a great movie.
I was struck by the poor white versus poor black dynamic that underlies the film. I reminded me of the dynamic in our culture where people self-identify with those much wealthier than themselves, against all data, and usually to the detriment of the poorer person thinking that they’re going to be wealthy some day. (Fat chance.)
It struck me that the slave-holder class in the South was likely pretty small – slaves were very expensive, and represented significant capital, in purely economic terms. Poor whites would have been cut out of that economic engine entirely. The small slice of wealthy likely owned all the slaves.
Yet the racism and apartheid were enforced at all levels, and the poor whites, who would be more likely to come into contact with blacks on a person-to-person basis in the first place, were central in enforcing and reenforcing the caste system, particularly after the Civil War. (The formal Civil War, that is – I think we’re still fighting a larger Civil War, and the South/white/religionist force is not dead yet)
This racism permeates our society to this day, and dare I say it, underpins the Tea Party of old pasty white people today.
We are still being distracted and turned against each other on the basis of trivialities – by and for the interests of the few holding all the money/power. And complicit in this are the willfully stoopid, ever so eager to blame/hate the brown or Catholic or Muslim or feminist or urban or union guy across town.
Now, these willfully stoopid are usually older white people demanding we get off their lawns, and may be going the demographic way of the dinosaur (oh please oh please). However, their ranks are being actively replenished – see Bachmann’s brown shirts, or suburban prosperity gospel megachurches, or dog-whistle attacks on poor/brown/Muslim/women/union people on Fox.
The war ain’t over.

I’m kind of wondering about all the constant drumbeat about taxing the rich when the Democrats has the White House, Supermajority in the House and filibusterproof Senate in 2009. Please explain why they didn’t address this and instead extended the Bush tax cuts?? Seems like pointing your finger at R’s and Tea Party is ridiculous. You had control and did nothing but pass ObamaCare, which is dying a death by a thousand cuts and spend money we didn’t have in a failed Stimulus effort.
I don’t see how in the world you are going to sell Independents that all this is the fault of R’s and Tea Party when you had total control. But keep trying and good luck as it makes for great entertainment.
Liberal Scientist wonders why Republicans hate America spews:

He was quite pasty-while – so likely not puddy, but the magnolia theory works.
YLB spews:
41 – You’re an idiot. Ever hear of Scott Brown?
Even with Brown, the 60 vote majority was a myth. Too many of the Dems are bought and paid for tools by a host of special interests (think Big Pharma, Banking/Finance, Insurance, Oil and Gas). One of the “Dems” was a recently converted Republican, Arlen Spector. When he was a Republican, he’d only vote for the stimulus package if it included tax cuts in effect watering down the intended purpose.
The “drumbeat” among the bought and paid for tools was that in the depths of a recession a tax increase even to people who could clearly afford it was a “job killer”. Surprise, surprise, it’s still that and it will always be that. It was “that” when Bill Clinton did his puny tax hike on the rich and all the tools said it would destroy the economy. Hint: it didn’t.
A good portion of the “independents” judging by recent polls support higher taxes on the rich and government spending to stimulate aggregate demand.
The R’s in the Senate have pulled every trick in the book to block Obama at every turn. They don’t confirm any of his appointments. They filibuster anything Democratic agenda item he’d sign. They do this because they know the true Democratic agenda is popular and means the death of their politics of plutocracy.
The degenerate afterbirth of the R’s in the House – the tea baggers, themselves a product of Faux News and plutocrats like the Koch brothers have not created one single job with all their grandstanding in the House. Instead they pass batshit insane ideological exhortations with no hope of being passed in the Senate or signed by Obama.

That state’s GOP legislators wanted to let anyone buy a gun without a background check and carry it without a permit anywhere he wanted to, including kindergartens and daycares. My plan is not: No background checks, no screening of criminal records, no training required in safe and legal use of firearms, no permit required for concealed carry, no restrictions on where concealed guns can be carried (e.g. bars, sports stadiums, schools, and public buildings). My “gun control plan” is the same as my traffic control plan: Society needs reasonable rules and someone to enforce them.
