Comcast buys NBC, fires Olbermann

by Goldy — Friday, 1/21/11, 9:51 pm

Anybody who says that media consolidation isn’t the greatest threat to our democracy, is either a liar, a fool… or somebody who wants a career in media.

    This is fucking outrageous.

Here we are folks…1984 twenty-seven years later.

Wait till the rethuglicans get their mitts (NO pun intended) on the Seanate…my god. We are doomed. This merger of NBC/Universal and Comcast will be as disasterous for Obama as signing the Communications Act of 1996 wqs for Bill Clinton.

Citizens United and now this. Fuck.

Although I would probably not believe it myself, Comcast has allegedly said, wasn’t their idea. Although did GE ever put much undo influence on NBC News in the decades they owned NBC? Although every time they were covering a plane crash, and the engine was made by GE, they had to say that GE was their parent.

By the way, I don’t just watch Olbermann on MSNBC, I also like Maddow, sometimes Shultz if I can find it(they don’t podcast it), and Morning Joe, and I also go to CNN for Parker Spitzer, and Anderson Cooper, as well as Reliable Sources, and Olbermann crossed Howard Kuertz’s radar quite a lot. CNN has adopted a non-partisan policy it seems, so I doubt Keith Olbermann would go there.

Still, having a one-sided press is not the message we should be sending out. I know Clear Channel gets criticised by Liberals for squelching speech, but they have been the one that stuck by Randi Rhodes the most. ALthough I do fault them for the Minot Train Derailment fiasco, thankfully nobody was killed, but there were no emergency news messages carried over the radio stations there, because all of them were automated, run from another city. A result of Media Consoldiation. Clear Channel’s position though, was the city never connected the EAS to the stations, or they would have broken in with emergency information. The train was only carrying hazardous chemicals. Not like it was carrying what goes on at the Air Force Base outside of town. (Home to a wing of B-52s, and a wing of Minutemen).
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.....derailment

Also, Maddow seems to be the only one at MSNBC giving coverage to an act of domestic terrorism in Spokane. at theMLK/Unity Day Parade, one of two parades scheduled for Downtown Spokane this week. The other was for Eastern Washington University’s National Championship Victory parade.(We came back from behind to beat Delaware, despite Delaware’s high-ranking chearleader)

It isn’t about opposing views (opinions) with each side being equal. It is about facts, which is what Olbermann dealt with. The main stream press has been corrupted with dirty campaign money flooding their coffers, so they have rewarded the right-wing nut jobs by giving their “opinions” equal footing with facts from the left. This is why the right continues to spew lie after lie (the health insurance reform is a “job killer” is the latest flat out lie by the right.) I’m sorry but lies and opinions based on bullshit are not “one of side of the story” that the press should give equal time to. We are all entitled to our own opinion, but we are not entitled to our own facts. While Limbaugh pulls facts right out of his butt, Olbermann backed his up with factual evidence.

About CNN, they have lived with and the fired that fucker Lou Dobbs. I don’t see them flipping that coin over and spending it again.

What I think happens is that some other cable channel goes “Conan OBrian” (but not TBS, obviously) and separates itself from the rest of the cable crap.

It will be interesting to see if any of the other cable channels pick up Olbermann. The most obvious one would be comedy central, though I suppose any number of channels would work.

Not that I necessarily see it happening, but it would be funny if Fox hired Olbermann and gave him way more rope to do his thing than NBC ever did.

Also will be interesting to see what if any pressure is put on Maddow. Though from all reports she is much better at getting along with management and still getting what she wants than Olbermann.

Comcast, evil as they are, did NOT fire KO.

    NYT via Susan Gardner @DK:

For the last several weeks, Mr. Olbermann and the network have been in negotiations to end his successful run on MSNBC, according to executives involved in the talks who requested anonymity because the talks were confidential. The deal was completed on Friday, and Mr. Olbermann made the announcement on his final “Countdown” hours later.

KO left while the getting was good:

According to anonymous Comcast officials, the separation had nothing to do with the Comcast/NBC merger. In fact, the Times account claims the company is worried that it will be seen as exerting pressure to fire Olbermann.

One executive, who asked not to be identified because Comcast had instructed employees not speak about the situation, said the company dreaded the prospect of being blamed if Mr. Olbermann were to quit soon after the takeover.

The sad part is we won’t be “seeing” KO any time soon:

The executives involved in the discussions confirmed that the deal carries limitations for Mr. Olbermann in terms of when he can next work on television, though he will be able to take a job in radio or on any forum on the Internet. The deal also prohibits the host from commenting publicly on the deal, the executives confirmed.

KO burns out wherever he goes. There are reports he wanted out @ MSNBC. He was almost canned a few months ago, there was already bad blood over the suspension. I’m no more confident comcast had anything to do w/ it than I would be Obama had something to do w/ it by appointing Immelt to a biz friendly post earlier in the day. If you are an executive, the biggest loose cannon in television is KO, as Randi Rhodes is a loose cannon to radio for example. KO doesn’t respect power, whether it be politically or his own employer(s)

Over the air digital TV is free and HD. All the local stations are adding back channels with more programming. Netflix is great. Exactly. Olberman was in a great position to negotiate a buyout so now he gets paid for doing nothing, the progressive way of life. Hopefully the terms of the buyout will be leaked. We’ll be shocked, shocked, shocked.
Painting Olberman as a victim of Comcast is ridiculous. His ratings were simply not going to get any better. He got out at the right time as he would never, ever come close to the ratings of O’Reilly, Hannity, Greta & Beck.
Olberman has an good attorney and finanical adviser. It was a good business move on his part.

    olbyisacapitalist spews:

Olbermann had a steep ratings dip dropping him to third place in the prime-time news feature slot behind FOX News’ Bill O’Reilly and Headline News’ Nancy Grace. Nancy Grace was beating Olby. By December 2010, Olbermann’s ratings had dropped 11 percent and in the coveted 24-54 demographic, they fell by 25 percent. In 2010, MSNBC suffered the worst declines of the top three networks (FOX, CNN and MSNBC). This is all about business & ratings, not progressive feelings. The facts seem to squash the emotional conspiratorial reaction of the far-left.
