Coburn, a senator from Oklahoma, is believed to be receiving encouragement from a small group of wealthy businessmen and philanthropists in the Oklahoma-Kansas-Texas region of the country.
Hmm. I wonder if any of those wealthy Oklahoma businessmen include Sonics owners Clay Bennett, Tom Ward and Aubrey McClendon, who have contributed nearly $10,000 to Coburn in the past?
“He’s all about faith, lower taxes, and staying the course in Iraq,” says an adviser outside of the Senate who has been speaking to Coburn.
He’s all about “lower taxes” huh? And, you know, one way to lower taxes is to not spend taxpayer dollars building $500 million hoops palaces for billionaires.
Coburn is believed to have the backing of several low-profile members of the so called “Swift Boaters,” men who financed the ads that doomed the presidential aspirations of Sen. John Kerry.

Sen. Coburn is, I understand, the fellow that had a falling out with Speaker Gingrich, because he felt that the Speaker was too far left.
While he is apparently consistent in his views (I could not find the reference to his performing an abortion, except for the ectopic pregnancy, which even the most vocal pro-life folks would allow for) but his views aren’t so much “conservative” as they are “neo-con”.
Apparently, he’s in favor of government running people’s personal lives, but against government having any control whatsoever over big business.
I can’t tell exactly what his underlying political philosophy might be, but he acts as if he’s a wholly-owned subsidiary of big business.
While I doubt that even his supporters expect him to win much of anything, he could split up the religious right even more, which would work in Mayor Guiliani’s benefit. We may joke about Mayor Guiliani, but he’s probably the biggest threat that the Republicans have campaigning at the moment, because he can draw votes from independents.
(I am very happy to note Senator Obama is apparently leading him in the polls, but I’m not willing to put much stock in the polls at this point, as it’s still way too early.)
Our best hope is that the Dobson/Robertson crowd gets behind one candidate and pushes him through. Speaker Gingrich would be the most beneficial from our perspective, and somehow the Dobson/Robertson crowd seems happy to overlook the Speaker’s many faults and indiscretions.
I doubt very much that the voters would overlook those indescretions, nor forget just what a disaster he was as Speaker.

Productivity is going up and real wages for the folks that actually do the producing are going down.
I’d also be interested to see how corporate earnings, in the form of either increased stock value or stockholder dividents are doing in comparison to senior executive salaries.

Regarding the thoughts of Rep. Paul.
Let’s see. His assumption is that the folks in the Middle East don’t hate us because we’re free so much as they hate us because we put military bases in their countries and support their enemies.
When we do go to their countries, we often act disrespectfully toward them, their culture and their religion. Not always, but too often.
Actually, having been there more times and for longer periods than Rep. Paul, I think that the problem is much more complicated than his assessment, and that their is a certain resentment simply to our way of life, or more precisely, to what they perceive as our way of life.
But… Rep. Paul is at least willing to talk about the fact that we’ve done a rather poor job of diplomacy and understanding in the Middle East over a long period of time. We ally ourselves with unpopular and repressive regimes and are seen by many as helping to quash the very freedoms we believe in.
We’re not alone in our attitudes in that region of the world, and that too is a problem. When the British pretty much ran everything over there, they tended to act in a very condescending and heavy-handed manner. People there see us as doing things the same way, and they don’t like it.
And so, some of them don’t like us much. Why would it be considered unpatriotic to admit that?

No, Rainier doesn’t scare me, and Hilltop (the Tacoma neighborhood with a similar reputation) figured out that the way to deal with the issue of crime in their neighborhood was to stop tolerating it.
Despite the fact that the state has, over many years used Tacoma as the dumping grounds for every person released from prison, it’s getting a lot better. Lots of reasons, but local folks getting involved was the biggest one.
Democrats finally learned that just “throwing money at a problem” wasn’t the answer. It took us a few years, especially considering that the answers actually require at least a bit of money. Politicians of either stripe do not do nuance well, but enough of them are figuring things out that there is improvement.
Yes, Puddybud, before you even go there, I currently live near Gig Harbor, and I have no plans to live in Hilltop. I’ve lived in central Oakland, Inglewood and Lennox in California, and in an area of Bremerton where turning the whole neighborhood into a Navy parking garage was a huge improvement. Been there, done that.
Now I go back to deliver Thanksgiving dinners to families in Hilltop (and other low income neighborhoods) and to list and sell properties (low income neighborhoods on the Key Peninsula).
Are Democrats perfect in handling problems of poverty and crime? No, of course we’re not. But we do realize that something needs to be done, and are willing to try. For example, putting more Police on the street and funding training programs.
Not everything works, and some things are good ideas where the execution is bungled. Welcome to real life.
Additionally, while larger cities tend to vote for Democrats, they are also areas of higher crime. Hey, guess what? Not a whole bunch of hardened criminals want the head out to the corn fields of Iowa.
While Republicans like to point out that the urban cores (that tend to be mostly Democratic) have higher crime rates, they often forget to mention that they are the economic engines of the surrounding regions. Criminals go where there are people with jobs and money. Who’d have thunk it?

Your comment simply rehashes the standard Republican talking point and a few insulting names without any evidence whatsoever.
In fact, comparing the spending habits of the Bush administration and the recent Republican congress with that of the Clinton administration, it’s interesting to note who was advocating carefully targeted funding and fiscal responsibility, and who just spent like drunken Sailors on a short liberty.
Do some solutions require funding? Of course they do. Putting extra police on the street helps to make neighborhoods safer, but those extra officers do expect to draw a paycheck.
Do after-school recreation programs help divert kids away from gangs? Yes again, and while they can be done very cheaply, they are not free either, although an argument can easily be made that they are far cheaper than dealing with the problems caused by larger and more powerful gangs.
Exactly what big-spending social programs have Speaker Pelosi, Senator Kennedy or Senator Durban proposed that you take issue with?
Certainly, there are some large problems that might require additional funding that are being looked at. Health care is probably on top of the list, and it’s been a long-standing Democratic priority, so you can expect that once we have a Democratic President, along with a Democratic Congress, we’ll want to take it on.
Will it require more money than the current system? Maybe, maybe not. The current system has enormous waste built into it, and actually does cover just about everyone, although it does a rather poor job of it. Vaccines and routine health care tends to be much cheaper than emergency room visits. We’ll see, as there isn’t anything concrete on the table yet.
Other big spending priorities? Many of them are structured so that they pay for themselves. Increased student loan (and even grant) programs tend to be self-funding through increased productivity and therefore, increased revenue.
(Example – a $10,000 scholarship to someone that would otherwise not be able to afford higher education. The difference in earnings between a college grad and a non-college grad is roughly 13,000 annually (1996 numbers). Assuming 40 years of working, that gives us over a half million dollars in additional income. Even at relatively low tax rates, the extra tax revenue brought in more than pays for the scholarship.)
Lots of nuance here, and as I mentioned, politicians do not do nuance very well. Far easier to complain about a couple thousand dollars for “midnight basketball” than to compare the cost of the program against the cost of dealing with gang related activities.

Yes, Puddybud, I know. But I don’t generally do it to you. While I realize that there are some important philosophical differences between us, there are areas where we can find common ground.
Other areas, as important as they are, we’ll just have to agree to disagree, and work them out at the polls. (Although it would be interesting to debate them with you. I think that I understand your viewpoint, although I disagree. I’m not sure you really understand mine, although I doubt that it would change your position.)
You also know that I believe in dialog, even when I disagree with someone. Civil discourse is much more likely to find solutions than angry rhetoric, and even when it doesn’t it allows the people to work together in areas where they do agree.
Not, of course, that I am always perfect at that.
Oh, and on that subject of health care. While the easiest argument is to simply compare life expectancies between the US and Canada (they’ve got us beat) I have a somewhat better argument that I can make.
My family and I have been on a government-run health care system for most of my adult life. It actually runs very much like many of the Canadian systems (each Province runs its own system, and some are better than others) as TriCare (the military medical benefit program for families and retirees) is a basic managed care program.
And yes, I’ve had to wait for elective medical procedures myself, but overall, I’m pretty happy with the care that my family and I receive.
