Ballots have dropped, and another election season is upon us. Please join us for an evening of politics over a pint at the Seattle Chapter of Drinking liberally. This week, folks from Carbon Washington will join us to discuss I-732. This initiative would lower sales taxes and eliminate the B&O tax in exchange for a carbon tax, with a goal of reducing the carbon emissions that contribute to climate change as well as the impact of our regressive state tax system on low income families.

The Seattle Chapter of Drinking liberally meets tonight and every Tuesday at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern, 2409 10th Ave E, Seattle. You’ll find us in the small room at the back of the tavern. Our starting time is 8:00 pm, but some folks stop by even earlier for dinner.




Can’t make it to Seattle tonight? Check out one of the other DL meetings happening this week. Tonight the Tri-Cities, Vancouver, WA, and Shelton chapters also meet. On Wednesday, the Bellingham and Burien chapters meet. The Spokane, Woodinville and Kent chapters meet on Thursday.

There are 190 chapters of Living Liberally, including eighteen in Washington state, four in Oregon and two in Idaho. Chances are good there’s a chapter meeting near you.

    Gravely filled with concern, I immediately texted Gabrielle, the automotive adviser who helped me select my LP 610 (she convinced me that the ten cylinder Huracan was more in keeping with my commitment to the environment) to learn if my San Juan Islands car was indeed made from baby parts.

    Pretty much everything.

    Donald Trump is the joke candidate. He’s not there to be taken seriously. His candidacy is a product of personal vanity, and has no real bearing on the ’16 election. He seems to be capitalizing on the jingoism and nationalism that the GOP has tried to cultivate in the party since the early 1960s, but that capitalization is at a point in history where people who actually read carefully written and researched materials are more interested in how neofascist political movements such as the Tea Party have developed their strategies vis-a-vis the greater message to the people they’re trying to convince.

    The reality is, that there are nearly no “undecideds” in American Politics anymore. People have mostly already made up their minds about things, and gravitate to the people who can promote the message in the most basic terms that they can understand. Blind support for Party candidates has long since replaced the actuality of the candidates’ message and their background history.

    The Tea party is about fostering capital as the only possible avenue to leadership. It doesn’t matter that the candidates sponsored by capital have little experience in the real world, and no real working experience.

    Those people think that waking up at 8 in the morning, having a footman dress them and tie their ties, and then being driven (or flown) into the city for a hard 5 hour shift of meetings with other capitalists constitutes “work”. When it really is just play. They “play” at working, but they don’t even have to push paper, they have staff to do that for them. They have their meals in four-star restaurants, and make appointments with other capitalists to shoot a game of golf or to borrow a hundred million dollars or so for a few hours to cover a merger of companies that they already own.

    They pay no income taxes, because they have no income. They pay no sales taxes, because they own the companies that buy things at wholesale. They pay no health insurance, because their doctors are kept full-time on staff. They’ve never had to cook their own meals, fix their own car, pay a veterinarians bill or stay at home, sacrificing pay to deal with a sick kid. They never had to pay tuition at a University, they never had to do actual homework while in school.

    They don’t know anything about “work”. They don’t know anything about “paying” for shit. They have no concept whatsoever of sacrifice or having to pay a bill.

    They have had staff deal with those petty details for their entire lives. They know nothing.

    So what makes them so important? We could line every single one of them up against a wall and shoot them, and nothing at all would be lost.

    If the object is to de-fund PP what is the alternative? PP services are crucial at the state level for a host of services to poor women. Its all fine and dandy for conservative teapublicans to hate women in the abstract. It serves to motivate the base and doesn’t really cost them votes.

    But if you carry this program out to its logical conclusion, you end up breaking state run programs to deliver reproductive health care services to poor women, and you destroy a huge chunk of life saving medical research. Do that, and I don’t care how “moderate” you’ve managed to paint the candidate with no last name. Women will not turn out for him. And the teapublicans cannot earn the needed electoral votes in swing states without an efficient GOTV micro targeting women.

    I think that Boehner and McConnell handled the reaction exactly as they had planned, with or without Trump. The problem for the GOP is that as elected leadership they are put in the position of reacting rather than controlling. They are forced to mount a fairly muted response. Calls for hearings and investigations, a press release or two. None of the candidates wants to run on abortion as an issue in the general election. The timing on this sucks for them with a month long recess starting in a couple of weeks. Nothing gets going until after the barbecue recess. So it depends entirely on the private group and their media allies to keep the story alive in the real world while everybody in the real world is heading to Wally World in Family Truckster. Pathetic.

    That puts the onus back on the leadership to crank the whole thing back up again in September. Which frankly is going to be greeted with head scratching by the media. Hearings will happen. More statements will be issued. And one or two line items in bills will be deleted or altered. All of which will be reported dutifully while stifling another yawn.

    The purpose of this program was to at least begin to pry PP out of its current role in state run repro services to the poor. Given the poor timing that is very unlikely to happen now. And the “element of surprise” is wasted.
