It looks like the head of the Fiesta Bowl, John Junker, is in trouble. The Arizona Republic had led with a report two years ago to the effect that employees of the Fiesta Bowl were “encouraged” to give to political candidates and campaigns, almost all Republican, going back as far as 2002. Then Junkers would reimburse them from Fiesta Bowl money. There were also stories of outlandish spending on the Fiesta Bowl’s accounts, including a $1,200 trip by Junker and two associates to a strip club. Junker makes $600,000 per year as CEO of the Fiesta Bowl.
As a non-profit, the Fiesta Bowl is prohibited from given excessive compensation, diverting funds for personal use by executives, and from engaging in partison political activity. It is also prohibited by State and Federal law from disguising the source of contributions through “straw man” contributors, and until Citizens United, was prohibited from making political contributions at all.
It’s still unclear whether Junker will face any charges, but for the time being he has been suspended with pay by the Fiesta Bowl and all indications point to him losing his job, now that a blue-ribbon commission has issued it’s rather damning report. The Fiesta Bowl itself is even at risk, as the BCC is seriously considering removing it from it’s program of bowl games.
Not surprisingly, an Arizona Attorney General’s report found “no merit” to the allegations. But investigations by others, including an internal investigation by Fiest

Well that’s pretty meaningless, Pud. Are you comparing these private individuals actions with Fiesta Bowl foolishness? Or just randomly filling space?
Michael spews:
Wow, a rich person gave money to a politician, shocking!
YLB spews:
A little fun fact for right wing idiots..
Imagine a one kg mass – something you could hold in your hand, about 2.2 lbs..
Now imagine the mass of HUMANITY – the combined mass of every man, woman, child on this planet – that’s close 6.8 BILLION people. Pretty big mass wouldn’t you say? Way bigger than a handful right?
Now how much is the mass of CO2 emmitted into the atmosphere to due human activity EACH YEAR?
Think for a sec…
Here’s the answer:
It’s about 70 TIMES GREATER than the combined mass of HUMANITY. EACH AND EVERY YEAR.
35 GIGATONS..
And that has no effect on the planet right wing nuts say?

Puddybud’s always dribbling about how rich people give to Democrats. To me that’s both good and bad. If the giving is to Dem corporate sellouts – that’s bad.
But anyway, here’s a bucket of cold water on that crap:

When it comes to the fifty richest people in the country – Republicans get more..
Extrapolate that out – uh yeah Republicans probably get more.

Honestly, why are the republicans questioning the Commander in Chief in a Time of War. Didn’t they come unglued when anyone questioned bush? I mean the only difference that I can see is that a Black Democrat is in the white house.

to you, anything which puts rich DUMMOCRAPTS in a bad light looks bad! Just because one rich sports figure likes Republicans, there are many more who love DUMMOCRAPTS! And as you can see from their giving and specials they really love DUMMOCRAPTS! It’s a shame your leetle mind works like ylbs!
K spews:
What’s the bad light? They have money and are giving it to the party of their choice. Are you arguing for regulating campaign contributions? I was grasping for some connection to anything for your otherwise random comment. I should know better than to expect that from you.

Rich people, and corporations (through a variety of methods) will usually give political donations or pay to advance independent political advertising for any number of reasons. Some of them:
(1) to translate their money into social & political influence, which could be used for either good or evil, depending upon the person directing the donations and the person or party receiving them.
(2) to inflate their social & political weight, which is simply ego-driven. They already have people kow-towing to them due to their money (employees, vendors, etc.), now they want politicians to do so as well.
(3) to make sure they have access to persons with political power so they can make their positions known, and influence the debate (yes, I know this is similar to # 1, but it’s a slight variation).
(4) to buy a politician’s vote.
(5) to dominate the debate by flooding the media with paid-for advertising.
(6) in order to assist in the election of someone with similar political beliefs and values.
Some rich individuals and corporations will give to both parties and candidates simply in order to ensure access (# 3). Others will expect the receiving politician to vote rather obediently according to their will. You can often tell which is which simply by how the politician acts, when dealing with an issue which directly impacts the donar.
Which brings up the old story about Judge Roy Bean, Justice of the Peace in West Texas in the late 1800’s. He is reputed to have announced at the commencement of a hearing on a civil case that he had received two bribes, $40.00 from the plaintiff, and $50.00 from the defendant. “I propose that I give $10.00 back to the defendant, and decide the case squarely on the merits”.
From my perspective, contributions to Democrats tend to fall more in the # 1 and # 6 category. When it come to contributions which are strictly to buy a vote (# 5), it seems that the Republicans lead by far in that category.

and by the way, you all were trashing reagan just months ago for the strikes on Libya back in the 1980’s…funny how you changed your tune.
keep being a loser, loser.
Michael spews:
@33
Reagan’s couple of bombs did nothing.
NPR keeps getting PWN3D spews:
@34
not the point….Reagan was called a war-monger for punk-slapping gaddafi back in the day – now that we are actively attacking his army, the tune has changed.
and for those that chime in about how Reagan should have invaded or attacked Libya with more forces forget that back then, there was this little country who may have had something to say about overthrowing one of their clients…perhaps you have heard of them: The Soviet Union.
Can you imagine obadunce dealing with them? LOL, talk about trainwreck.
NPR keeps getting PWN3D spews:
@34
and actually, gaddafi got real quiet and went back into his tent after reagan put him in his place.
notice we didnt hear much from the good colonel after that incident.
Michael spews:
@35,36
Reagan didn’t put anyone “in their place.” The floor fell out of the oil markets and Europe threatened to stop dealing with with him if he didn’t knock it off.
What happened back in the day, happened back in the day. Whatever Reagan called for or was called back then has nothing to do with what’s going on now.
YLB spews:
33 – Whole different group? Oh my right wingers are now able to tell one “towel-head” from another? That’s some “progress” you guys are making!
Heh. And those were some effective strikes by Raygun. So scared it took pissing away a trillion in Iraq so he’d play ball and we could then buy his oil. Which in turn then scared him into embracing that Lockerbie bomber at his “homecoming”.
Speaking of which, have you found that Iranian oil we import yet? Didn’t think so.
NPR keeps getting PWN3D spews:
@38
have you figured out how Iran’s oil production has a direct impact on our gasoline prices?
didnt think so.
and roping in Iraq to Libya? LMFAO…
Reagan embraced the lockerbie bomber?
are you smoking some of your kid’s stash again?
NPR keeps getting PWN3D spews:
kinda gets me laughing…just thinking about how obafool would have dealt with guys like Breshnev or Andropov…..
those old soviet war dogs would have chased obadunce all the way back to south chicago with his tail between his legs.
but thats a topic for another day.
YLB spews:
I’ll give Raygun credit for one thing. He had a soft spot in his heart for hard luck cases like some Russian religious folks who holed up in the American Embassy in Moscow.
He asked the Soviets to let them go and the Sovs said ok but don’t crow about it. Raygun kept his word and that was the start of a thaw between U.S. – Soviet relations..
BUT GADDAFFI?
They let that Lockerbie bomber go back to Libya and asked Muammar not to crow about it and Muammar throws a homecoming!
Shit I’ll do whatever I want – they need my oil!
Including massacring his own people who are sick and tired of the bastard.
YLB spews:
Corrected!

Michael spews:
@40
The signing of SALT 1 & 2 took care of the heavy lifting for dealing with Brezhnev and were signed by Ford & Carter.
What Reagan did was play cowboy to keep the rednecks in the Republican party off his back while negotiating with the folks on the other side. You’re channeling the myth of Reagan, not the reality.
YLB spews:
Yeah those old geriatrics who couldn’t keep a heartbeat to save their lives. Where are they now? Uhh… dead perhaps?
Oh yeah Obama really got rolled on strategic arms by Putin (former KGB) and Medvedev last December. So rolled, every Republican foreign policy star and enough Republicans in the U.S. Senate helped the Russkies roll him.
That’ll really come in handy in 2012 against Sarah “see Russia from AK” Palin..
