Another Open Thread written on the bus home from Drinking Liberally. The seat in front of me has a nondescript to go box in it. It’s past 11:00, so it’s not crowded; Nobody has to stand.

I both feel like I should do something, but also, nobody pays me to pick up trash. It seems pretty extreme to alert the driver. So, just write about it, I guess.

    I think NRA membership should be on a par with KKK membership.

    That is, the overwhelming majority of people who support sane firearms safety regulations should actively protest wherever and whenever NRA meets or does business. Nobody should want anything to do with them. People should refuse to knowingly serve, do business with, hire, or work for NRA members.     NBC Reports that three people confirmed Tillerson called Trump a Moron.

    The White House goes apeshit and calls it fake news.

    Tillerson disputes the part of the story that he was thinking of leaving the administration and when asked point blank about “moron” said, “I’m not going to deal with petty stuff like that.”

    Not “no”, not laughing “of course not”, “I’m not going to deal with petty stuff like that.” So yeah, he said it but he’s not going to comment

    The Fox Newses and radio blowhards start to report that Tillerson denied calling Trump a moron which is actually fake news because Tillerson did not deny that part of the story.

    NBC stands by their story and says they now have talked to seven people who confirm that Tillerson was considering leaving the Administration.

    DerTrumper tweets that the entire story had been debunked which of course it hasn’t.

    I was parsing some statistics this morning. I read an S&P 500 ETF is up 14.7% this year. My return is 18.2% and my portfolio yield is about 3.5%, so if you add 14.7 and 3.5 you get 18.2, which means my portfolio is exactly tracking the market return. Not beating it, merely matching it.

    Which brings me to my point here. Doctor Dumbfuck completely misses the mark. Completely. I’ve never claimed to beat the market. I make no pretense of being a superior stockpicker. To the contrary, the essence of my argument is that it takes no brains at all, even a rabbit can do it.

    There’s really only one major decision you have to make to become a successful capitalist under our system. And that’s to be a capitalist instead of a worker. This is the simple thing I’ve been saying all along.

    All it takes to make 18% in a year when the market is returning 18% is to be IN the market. That’s it. It’s so simple even children and rabbits can do it.

    Did I say you have to beat the market to make 18% Hell no. Am I beating the market? No. And why would I worry about that, when I can make 18% just by being IN the market, and merely going along for the market’s ride? What’s Doctor Dumbfuck’s problem with that? Isn’t 18% good enough?

    Sure beats what banks pay. Beats the wages Republicans pay, too. You don’t have to get out of bed. No fighting commuter traffic. No bosses, co-workers, or customers yelling at you. You don’t have to do a damn thing beyond deciding to be a capitalist instead of a wage slave. And how much work is that?

    On an annualized basis and based on yesterday’s closing price, I’m up 17.42% for 2017. I am also not trying to beat the market, but I do keep on eye on the S&P 500 returns. It’s merely a yardstick to look at occasionally.

    People get wrapped around the axle about beating market returns, but investing has elements similar to golf. Anyone who has played that game knows that the real competition is between the player’s score today and what it was the last time he or she played the game.

    The bottom line for all investing is this – Are you going to meet your goal of having enough money to do what you want? If you are, then the market returns are a nice side issue but not the main point of investing.

    Capitalism has done more to help economically empower people that any other system tried thus far.

    P. S. – I use Excel’s XIRR function to determine my returns. I make inflows and outflows constantly, so the XIRR function is the best tool out there for keeping track of returns.

    @38 Different rabbits have different goals. Mine is to not be dependent on a job or beholden to a boss. Investing is one piece of that. The other piece is getting our of debt and then staying out of debt. Possessing independent income and being debt-free brings true freedom. Isn’t that what we all ultimately want?     Here’s what’s wrong with his argument:

    (1) The complaint is not against tax cuts for the rich per se, but that GOP tax-cutting schemes disproportionally favor the rich.

    (2) GOP tax cuts for the rich invariably come at the expense of higher deficits or cutting spending that benefits the middle or or lower classes. For example, Trump wanted to pay for his tax cuts for the rich by gutting Medicaid. When that didn’t work, Republicans now want to finance their tax cuts for the rich with higher deficits — after years of complaining about deficit spending by Democrats to rescue the economy.

    (3) GOP claims that cutting taxes for the rich spur growth, create jobs, or “trickle down” to the middle and lower classes are bogus. Tax cuts for the rich benefit no one except the rich.

    (4) The rich have had their taxes cut so many times, and by so much, that it’s now the middle and working classes’ turn to get any tax cuts. Cutting taxes for these groups will help the economy far more than cutting taxes for the rich will, because it has greater impact on consumer spending.

    (5) Republicans argue that cutting taxes for the rich will spur job-creating investments. While that may be true under some economic conditions, it’s not true given present economic conditions. The world is awash in idle investment cash. Companies have so much cash they can’t spend it on their businesses, so they’re using it to buy back stock and increase dividends. The last thing the economy needs is more investment cash. What the economy needs is more money in the pockets of consumers.

    (6) It’s true the rich pay most of the taxes. Of course they do. They have most of the money. Therefore, they SHOULD pay most of the taxes.

    (7) What happened to the “revenue neutral” tax reform we heard so much about a few years ago? The GOP’s tax plan will add trillions to the deficits and national debt. Much of which will be borrowed from China. Is this a good idea? When you get right down to it, “tax reform” is nothing but a Trojan horse for cutting the taxes of the rich. This time, it’s so blatantly skewed to favor the rich that this version of “tax reform” will actually raise the taxes of about a quarter of middle class taxpayers.

    When Novak bleats that cutting taxes for the rich “isn’t a bad thing,” what he misses is that the devil is in the details, and the details of this GOP tax scheme, like all GOP tax schemes, suck for workers and middle class families.

    U.S. median income in June 2015 was $59,039 which is about 11,000 in 1973 dollars.

    That’s not much more than the median income back then.

    Machineguns are designed for specific military tactics, such as breaking up massed infantry assaults, or laying down a base of suppressive fire. Inherently inaccurate, they’re useless for hunting or target shooting, and have no legitimate civilian use.

    But, as I said, you don’t really need the ingenious accessories. You can “bump fire” any semi-auto firearm with your bare hands with a little know-how and practice.

    As I said, machinegun fire isn’t accurate, and bump fire even less so, but who needs accuracy when you’ve got a densely packed crowd of 20,000 people for a target? All you need is the gun, lots of ammo, and the mental functioning of a deranged sociopath with a massive chip on his shoulder to simulate a German gunner chopping down a 1914 Russian frontal infantry assault.

    That’s a pretty good summation of what most people want: to be well-off enough to not have to work. Work, ultimately, is humiliation. Having enough money to avoid that is a good motivating factor.

    So let’s talk now about the so-called “death tax,” which Trump, Ryan, and McConnell want to eliminate.

    First of all, the term itself is a lie, because the dead don’t pay taxes. Inheritance taxes are effectively paid by the living heirs.

    Here’s the thing. Only very rich heirs get hit with that tax. The first $5.5 million ($11 million for a couple) is exempt. And because estates are largely made up of never-previously-taxed capital gains, that’s an awful lot of what by any reasonable definition is “income” that’s going completely untaxed. That’s not a deal that anyone working for wages gets.

    I would be okay with abolishing estate taxes if the estate’s previously-untaxed capital gains were taxed at capital gains rates, which are still a much better deal than wage earners get. But they aren’t. Heirs get what’s called a “basis step up” which effectively erases the capital gain for tax purposes, and effectively exempts all the assets of the estate from capital gains taxes and any other form of income taxes.

    So, my position is, if heirs don’t want to pay estate taxes, then let them pay income taxes, either at the capital gains rate or the ordinary income rate, I’m not real particular about which. But paying no taxes on millions of dollars of income? No deal.

    But that’s the deal that rich Republicans want for themselves, their spouses, and their kids. If this passes, i.e. eliminating the estate tax with no modification of the basis step up or taxability of previously-untaxed income and capital gains of estates, this special deal for heirs drips with so much moral hazard as to destroy for once and all the myth that you get ahead in America by “working hard.” It virtually screams that anyone who works for wages is a patsy, sucker, and fool.
