The League of Conservation Voters, one of the nation’s most influential environmental groups, has enthusiastically endorsed Sen. Maria Cantwell for reelection to the US Senate. That Cantwell is the LCV’s first endorsement of the 2006 season is no accident; they also plan to support her reelection with an independent, grassroots campaign.
“LCV is proud to make its first endorsement of the 2006 election cycle for Senator Maria Cantwell,” said LCV President Deb Callahan. “Senator Cantwell is one of our nation’s strongest environmental leaders in Congress, fighting every day for the health, quality of life and pocketbooks of Washington families, willing to stand up to big corporate interests, and working tirelessly to protect our wild places for future generations. In the coming weeks and months, we look forward to mounting an aggressive campaign to help reelect Senator Cantwell to the U.S. Senate.”
Ms. Callahan also commented that LCV’s particularly early endorsement of Sen. Cantwell is because of her exemplary environmental record and leadership on behalf of Washington families. Senator Cantwell earned a 100% rating on LCV’s 2004 National Environmental Scorecard

It’s totally understandable for us to air disagreements on certain policy choices (and that Iraq war vote was very foolish), but let’s not lose site of all she has done to fight for what we believe. She is a good Democrat running in a tough race — if we’re going to take the country back, we need to get behind people like Maria by focusing on the positive and doing what it takes to win.
And that’s why I’m psyched to see LCV get behind her so early. And they don’t pussyfoot around — they play to win.

Even the Canadians realize it sucks unless you have a slight cough. All the good doctors left the Canada. They are trying to “modify” the Socialized Medical System up there. It will be interesting to see what there next mess is.

Don’t get me started about the Republican fiscal irresponsibility. Our problem here is the irresponsibility is systemic….engrained in the bureaucratic goo. The closest thing we have to the Canadian system is Group Health (often colloquially called “Group Death”). Group Health used to be like that. You’d wait a week for an appointment, and if you had anything more complicated than flu, they’d misdiagnose it and send you home with Tylenol — then you’d die! They also had a reputation (possibly deserved) for losing surgical instruments inside patients, and things like that …
… but Group Health has gotten immensely better. They don’t operate their own hospital anymore; Group Health members needing hospitalization are sent to Virginia Mason Hospital, and Group Health acts like an insurance carrier who pays the hospital bills. Mrs. Rabbit called the doctor, I was seen right away, and was admitted at Virginia Mason Hospital almost instanteously. The only paperwork was signing 1 form to consent to treatment. I don’t know what it cost but I would guess for the ER, hospitalization, tests, doctors, medicines, etc., I probably ran up a bill of $20,000 or more. The only paperwork I received or had to deal with was home-care instructions and information about the Rx’s. No confusing EOBs, billing statements, or any of that crap — I didn’t owe a dime — and Group Health took care of all the administrative details. Since my discharge, I’ve had numerous followup doctor visits, and most of them were same-day or next-day appointments.
So what changed? Better management, that’s what. And a customer service orientation.
If this is what socialized medicine or Canadian-style medical care looks like when it’s well managed with a customer service orientation, I think everyone should have it!
The fact is, Americans pay more for medical care (per capita) than any other country, but the quality of care ranks below most developed countries. We have the highest administrative costs in the world. Our private-market system of delivering health care has proved to be costly and inefficient. And nearly 20% of our population has no access to health care at all — and the administration in power has just changed the bankruptcy laws to make the little guy’s medical debts financially ruinous (while making it easier for giant corporations to welsh their pension obligations at the expense of vulnerable senior citizens). It sucks! I’m not saying we should adopt the Canadian system, or even the Group Health system — but we should adopt something better (and fairer) than the piece-of-crap medical care system we have now, which serves high-salaried CEOs far better than it serves patients or consumers.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Periodically, we are subject to Mark the Ruffian’s diatribes about how only commodity traders and other bloodsucking bastards who skim fortunes off the top of the economy while producing nothing except higher consumer prices “deserve” medical care.
In the World of Mark, if you’re a daycare worker taking care of tots for $9 an hour, fuck you! According to him, you don’t deserve medical care (or survival) because you don’t have an MBA in Bloodsucking, and don’t want six (or seven, or eight, or nine, or ten) figures!

A mother who lost her son in Iraq was interviewed on Fox News had this to say: “I have seen photos of entire fighter jets buried in the sand. I have seen pictures of entire caches of weapons that just my son’s unit would uncover.” I wonder why we never hear much about that one? Here’s also a nice little list of what was found:
-500 tons…that’s right…TONS…make that 1million pounds of yellow cake uranium. It was found at Saddam’s nuclear weapons facility (yup…he had one of those too.)

I think it will be tough for McGavick to beat Cantwell. The state GOP isn’t a very inspiring bunch of people, and tends to be heavily controlled from the top down and discourage innovation. Can McGavick really inspire even the GOP, since he will be viewed as annointed by the leadership?
Rossi managed to be inspirational, but it was largely because Gregoire is so uninspiring, and because people are strongly wanting to change almost anything after 24 years. This was in spite of Rossi also being annointed and seeming to come almost out of nowhere.
I don’t see the inherent inspiration to change the US Senate, which the GOP has basically controlled for the last 12 years. (Yes, the Dems were ahead 51-49 for 18 months in 2001-02, but it was close enough not to change things too much.) And probably even less inspiration since the President isn’t all that popular.
I will predict that Cantwell will beat McGavick by about the margin that Murray beat Nethercutt last fall. Why should challenging Cantwell be any more (or less) competitive for the GOP than challenging Murray? It won’t be a total blowout, but Cantwell should win by five to ten points in a strongly contested election.

Richard Pope spews:
Will Bush do anything to help the Louisiana wetlands? Louisiana has lost thousands of square miles of swampland — converted into sea — because of sinking land and rising oceans. Louisiana has sacrificed for the benefit of the rest of the country. Oil and gas exploration has caused a lot of this. And channelling the Mississippi River, instead of allowing flooding to deposit silt, has caused most of the remainder.
An investment of say $4 billion to $5 billion (about the cost of the proposed Seattle “tunnel” and less than one month cost of the Iraq war) would truly do wonders for Louisiana’s wetlands and also increasing the flood protection levees surrounding New Orleans.
About a week ago, Louisiana’s governor invited Bush to take a tour of Louisiana’s wetlands (while Bush was on vacation in Crawford). Bush said he was too busy to do this. Of course, he will be taking a helicopter tour now in a few days, due to the disaster from Katrina.
This really is one of the nation’s most tragic environmental catastrophes. Can you imagine losing an area of Washington equal to the size of King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap Counties?
And it could have been a (much much more) horrible human tragedy — if Katrina had been 10 miles further west (or if it had stayed as strong as it was Sunday morning), the water would have been high enough to overflow the levees surrounding New Orleans and fill the entire city with water.
Of course, the same problem (almost as severe — it gets worse every year) existed during the Clinton administration. But the scientific knowledge and public awareness increases every year, and it is a pretty major subject for attention right now.

Rural Health Care and National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Act are both nanny state programs transferring money from the producers to the takers. Groucho would be proud.
And the Intelligence bill attempts to implement an American law in foreign countries? How’s that for imperialism.
Also, are you suggesting that all these things came from her fertile mind? She thought up these things all be herself? Or did a puppet master give these things to her as “go-dos”
bill spews:
Hey redneck, regarding “stick their greedy fucking hand in my pocket.” You are the one who is trying to pass a law requiring me to go out an buy an ID. Keep your own filthy hands out of my pocket you filthy bastard!!

Single payer health care. McDermott introduces it at the beginning of each Congress.
Completely lifts the burden of health care off the backs of businesses, eliminates billions of overhead and makes the economy more efficient and competitive.
Mark The Redneck spews:
Moonbat – LMAO ! !! ! ! McDermott making economy more efficient and competitive. Where do you get this stuff? What talking point sheet are you using.
You crack me up.

You don’t need the dime if the rednecks keep their pants zipped.

JCH @ 69
Hey JCH you stupid shit, here’s a pop quiz for ya:
Does the U.S. have more or less than refinery capacity than it had 10 years ago?
(Hint: More)

You must not have noticed lately that health care costs are dragging down corporate balance sheets. Big time. Relieving companies of this burden would do more to improve corporate profits than pretending options aren’t expenses ever did.
antidote spews:
Uh, Mark @ 74 — In addition to your general ignorance, you apparently also need some remedial reading classes.
The part of the jobs act that Sen. Cantwell sponsored was the part that cut YOUR taxes (assuming you live in Washington state; if you don’t, shut UP). Of course, if you think that money is “special interest,” I’ll take your share.
And who CARES if rural red-state doctors get shafted by Medicare, right?
And that portion of the intelligence bill deals with ensuring that MY tax money earmarked for this project is well spent, instead of being dumped down another right-wing rat hole. Not to mention ACTUALLY ENSURING that it will contribute to border security. But Mark, you don’t want any tax money spent on border security, do you?
