Well, you can’t get much more unsound than Republican nutcase Will Baker… which I suppose explains why (un)Sound Politics is plugging his website as part of their scholarly research into voting irregularities.
In case you forgot, Will Baker, a self-described “International Man of Diplomacy”, was the Republican candidate for State Auditor this past November. He’s also a roadside flower salesman, former exotic dancer, and devout conspiracy theorist who’s been booked into Pierce County Jail 19 times for harassing public officials. The state GOP was surprised to learn he’d only just been released from a six month jail sentence for “disturbing an official city meeting” at the time they filed him for the ballot.
“We are stuck with him,” said Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance. “It’s somewhat embarrassing. We should have been more thorough in checking him out.”
Oops.
But then, Vance is well known for his less-than-thorough vetting process. You know, like that big show he put on, demanding that canvassing boards count all those absentee and provisional ballots… that were already counted.
And here’s the funny thing. Despite the party’s well publicized attempt to “unfile” him, 841,772 loyal Republicans actually voted for this lunatic! Either Brian Sonntag has really pissed off the Republican electorate, or… well… you come to your own conclusion.

Mr. Cynical spews:
So Goldy–YOU are asking if a convicted felon voting is an illegal act??? DUHHHH!
Are you saying if the R’s show 129 hard examples of felons voting, dead people voting, duplicate voting, forged signatures (obviously forged that were counted), hard evidence that 1 person signed numerous ballots AND any other “wrongful acts” that you will support a revote???? WELCOME ABOARD DUDE!!! The train is leaving sometime in the next 2 weeks. I’ll save you a seat.
Richard Pope spews:
If you look at the Will Baker website, you will see absolutely nothing which promotes his 2004 candidacy for state auditor. There is a bunch of things from his prior election runs, but nothing from 2004. Yet his listed this website address in his voter’s pamphlet statement.
By the way, I strongly opposed Vance’s idiotic move in appointing Will Baker to the ticket. Not only was it stupid, it was illegal. RCW 29A.28.011 requires that vacancies be filled by the state central committee of a political party, and not by the party chairman acting unilaterally.
I pointed this out to Sam Reed, who should not have accepted Baker’s filing papers in the first place. The Secretary of State did nothing to correct this error, and let this travesty stand. In fact, Sam Reed’s office even advised Chris Vance on exactly what he needed to do to put Will Baker on the ballot.
I e-mailed the law to every single member of the GOP state central committee and state executive board, urging the party to sue to get Will Baker off the ballot. The most major reaction was silence, although a few members e-mailed their sympathies to me. I even got a couple of e-mails criticizing me for violating the 11th Commandment by speaking ill of a fellow Republican in pointing out Will Baker’s public history. Some even opined that Will Baker’s extensive arrest record was due to political oppression by the Tacoma-Pierce County Democrat machine.
Finally, because no one else would, I sued to get Will Baker off the ballot for being improperly appointed. Sam Reed opposed this, and presented a declaration from Chris Vance that the state party did not want the court to remove Will Baker off the ballot. Rather than troubling the state GOP with the expense of hiring their own attorneys, Sam Reed graciously arranged for the assistant AG (Jeff Even) assigned to his office (one of Gregoire’s employees, by the way), to advocate Chris Vance’s opposition to removing Will Baker as also being the official position of the Secretary of State. By the way, I lost. It is tough to beat Sam Reed, Christine Gregoire, and Chris Vance all at the same time, even if they are supporting Will Baker.
Had Will Baker been removed, some inoffensive non-entity could have been substituted in his place. As it was, I am sure that Will Baker’s presence on the ballot as the annointed GOP nominee probably caused at least several thousand people to have doubts about voting for Republicans in other races.

Fast forward to the wee hours of Monday morning when I recall something on his website about vote fraud. I call up these videos and guess what? Three videos about vote fraud – including two documenting a NINETEEN-NINTY-EIGHT problem in guess what county? KING! So I hyperlink to ’em – as well as a Seattle Weekly article earlier in the year on a different topic, same screwed up county – at http://josef-a-k.blogspot.com/2005/01/deja-vu.html . Did you do your homework today on that public records request for your local COunty Auditor?? I’m telling you Josef, you will be intrigued, astounded and downright pissed!! You first question will obviously be WHO ask Corky Mattingly to write this “blind faith” letter of support for Dean Logan??? Berendt? Sims? Reed?? Gregoire? She does say who?? That’s important.
Then you’ll ask yourself how in the hell these other County Auditors could possibly attest to Dean Logan’s work in this election without ever actually seeing what he did. CLASSIC CIRCLE THE WAGONS!
Then you will remind yourself Josef that Dean Logan worked previously in Kitsap County for one of his cheerleaders, Karen Flynn. Of course she is going to support her former employee, right? Oh and of course she is going to support the husband of her chief election officer. Doesn’t Dean Logan’s wife work for the Kitsap Co Auditor???
The State Election Officials appear to be a small, tightknit group Josef. Unfortunately, the gene pool is polluted. As a result, we now have institutionalized incompetence, don’t we? Sad.
Get the documents Josef. Your Skagit County Auditor was admirable for questioning this “blind faith” support letter.

Think it had something to do with the following:
“Timothy Harris, General Counsel for the home-building industry association (BIAW) called me to deny the above report. Harris says that his organization is investigating a number of irregularities and confirms that they have hired a handwriting expert to review certain documents, but that the handwriting expert has not reported any findings yet, and certainly not the findings reported above.”
Translation from courteous language to plain English- “John Fund is lying to ya’ll”

Well, a friend of mine at a local non-profit think tank referred me to a website that watchdogs the media and also did a post about an earlier column of his at http://mediamatters.org/items/200411300006 . I hyperlinked to both the Fund column and this website in the names of fair play and searching for the truth.

John Fund is lying
Oh, I wouldn’t go that far. Let’s just say Fund is an incompetent journalist.
LOL! Fund wrote a book on vote fraud! What a hoot!
zip spews:
John, Read the book. And watch the videos linked above. Then tell us exactly what steps AG Gregoire, Exec Sims, and Mr. Logan took to ensure that no fraud or incompetence was allowed to influence the outcome of this election. If he botched up this handwriting expert report it does not chnage the fact that they did NOTHING. And are now buying time with this delay releasing the final voter rolls.
Goldy spews:
Jim… thanks for keeping me from embarassing myself. My response to the John Fund report was simply to be that I wouldn’t believe anything coming from the BIAW. And now, I have to use the BIAW to tear down the piece.
It did seem awfully quiet there, didn’t it?
Erik spews:
Now after most of the conspiracy theories have faded away, here’s what’s left of the dilapidated (un)Sound Politics/Vance challenge to the Gregoire election for governor:
1) The investigative reporting of GOP former candidate Will Baker (whether it was while he was in or out of prison at the time is unknown)
2) The discrepency ballots due to military voters, moved voters and other reasons which occur every election and predominate in pro-Rossi counties.
There is still no basis in state statutory (RCW), common law (court decisons), or the Washington Adminstrative Code that even suggests that the voter discrepencies are a basis of fraud, “ballot stuffing” or any recognized basis to overturn the election.
Vance and his 10+ person army of bloggers notwithstanding, the inaguration is almost here.
(sheild eyes here)
“On Sunday, my youngest daughter bought her dress for the (inaugural) ball. She’s ready. I’m ready to be sworn in at noon. I’m working on the address. I’m working on the agenda. I’m totally dedicated to serving the citizens of the state of Washington, to moving forward.”
This must be as painful to the Orange bloggers as seeing Bush be inagurated by Michael Moore. However, it is the reality.
John spews:
Zip – I saw the videos. Something was being done about it – at the King County Council level. Remember Kent Pullen – God bless his eccentric heart – was on the case.
And I’m sure if Kent passed on in the midst of setting things right then for sure Rob McKenna took up the banner – oh I’m just so sure of it.
If R’s really cared back in 1998, I’m sure we wouldn’t have a problem by now, would we?
Oh, here’s more on John “Fraud” Fund.

Funny that you copied the entire update from the other site except for the last line:
“Harris did mention, however, that their investigation has revealed a substantial number of illegal votes cast by felons!”
So, not a lot of voter fraud going on, just a little bit of illegal voting, but that’s ok, as long as it helps the kleptocrats win.

You make it sound more like a coronation, oh so anxiously awaited. As if it will make all these petty little wingnuts who disbelieve the result go away.
Try this for the “recognized basis to overturn the election”: the public does not believe the result. If Gregoire and you partisans could stop gloating you’d admit that the election has been so screwed up that the results will be considered unbelievable by the public. Coronating her won’t change that. That’s real good for the state. See my earlier comments about the momentum build this will return to Eyman or maybe even Eyman’s spawn. Are you wiling to put up with the return of Eyman to avoid a re-vote? Well it’s what this screwed up election threatens us with after the coronation. So you “anybody but Rossi” partisans probably shouldn’t gloat quite so much.
zip spews:
Comment by John— 1/4/05 @ 9:34 pm
Give me a break, the demos have run everything in this state since 1998! And despite John Fund’s botched attempts at journalism, there are problems with the way things are ru in elections in King County. Which the democratic “big 3” allowed to remian unfixed.
Jim King spews:
Ranger- as a Rossi partisan, I am embarrassed by the embrace of John Fund by the GOP- he is absolutely unreliable. What I quoted had to do with John Fund, not the BIAW investigation. John Fund was commenting on the BIAW handwriting expert, and completely fabricating out of thin air what he was reporting, as the BIAW’s Harris said. The BIAW’s Harris, NOT John Fund, commented on finding felons.
Nothing about John Fund is funny- anyone looking for fraud need look no further than John Fund, and that undercuts my candidate’s position.
Josef spews:
You guys just don’t get it.
The point is NOT Will Baker. It is KING 5 found in 1998 there was problems with King County Elections and who was King County Executive then? Ron Sims. If I had the patience, I’d find a lot more links…
The point is also not John Fund – I could care less. The point is, very respectfully, my work I am trying to defend.
The point is the history and ease of vote fraud and the admission being blared on NWCN that King County will almost certainly be unable to reconcile all of the ballots WHILE Marummy is jumping all over them like the hottie wartime leader she is WHILE SecState Reed says this is grounds for a new election WHILE Gregovych whines that we Rossifarians and not her raised the issue when we were behind (I am obviously paraphrasing but you get the drift).
I also have it on good authority my work will be used by the Rossi campaign. I also might get a promotion out of this… provided I can fight on through the night to defend my work.

Josef – What we get is that the Rossi supporters are so desperate that they will turn to anyone – no matter how disreputable – if it provides even the hint of support for their theories.
Inauguration day’s coming up fast – I expect the Republicans to grow increasingly desperate and shrill in the next couple of days as they reach deeper into their bag of “magic tricks” to conjure up some evidence that will pull this rabbit out of the hat for them.
jcricket spews:
I wouldn’t be surprised if the unSounders started comparing Gregoire to Osama next, or claiming that you’re either for the revote or you’re for terrorism. We’re only about one step above that level now.
Mr. Cynical spews:
Who thinks Ms. Gregoire deserves a surprise gift for her “coronation”?
Goldy–When you’re sitting around a poker table and don’t see a pigeon, that means it’s YOU! I appreciate how careful you have been lately Goldy. Like I said, I will save room for you on the Rossi “love train”. It’s scheduled to leave soon.
You may have to sit in the back or in the cattle car…but there is room for ya Goldy.
I think you’ll find hundreds of felons were allowed to vote. The problem with some of these County’s (not all) is they failed to maintain there voter registration database. Election officials have access to information about felons, deaths etc. If they fail to act on that available information and send ballots to convicted felons…that is neglect. If the convicted felon votes, that is a wrongful act. Same with dead folks, forgeries that aren’t caught (including groups of ballots with common signatures–remember LBJ) and ballot-stuffing or ballot-unstuffing is also a real possibility. This is which the reconciliations are so, so important. The fact County Auditors continue to minimize the reconciliation process is disturbing for all but the partisan Dems.
If a compelling case is not put forth by Rossi from many different angles, I will be very surprised and the first person to congratulation Ms. Gregoire. Can she still have her inauguration ball if the Court stops her from taking office next week?
jcricket spews:

Even I will NOT go there… but I may come close. Right now Gregovych is an enemy of America for not doing her bit for the troops. I read on The Olympian today in one of their updates that, “The military votes, rejected after postal delays kept them from arriving before deadline, are estimated by the group [Operation Let Freedom Ring] at more than 1,000. If counted, they could swing the Governor’s race back to Republican Dino Rossi, who lost the final recount to Democrat Christine Gregoire.”
I put in brackets the group’s name.
As SecDef Marummy zeroes in on Gregovych, the world turns… and I cheer.

Erik spews:
Goldy,
This is too funny. You are going to have to post faster if you are going to knock out the ongoing and rotating conspiracy theories before they implode:
Unsound:
A handwriting analyst hired by the state’s home-building industry believes there is strong evidence that one person may have signed over 300 provisional ballots…
Then, hours later before you could deflate it:
Harris says that his organization is investigating a number of irregularities and confirms that they have hired a handwriting expert to review certain documents, but that the handwriting expert has not reported any findings yet, and certainly not the findings reported aboveappened to the 300 ballots. Oh well)
This theory rose and fell while everyone was still commenting on the post exposing the lengthy Baker criminal record which unsound relied upon.
Maybe HorseA needs to distribute information via instant messenger instead to keep up with the republican’s desperate shifting legal theories for overturning the election.

Republicans have the will and power to stop Gregoire and hobble democracy in Washington:
(having failed to show any fraud, a new plot is proposed)
Her (Gregoire) fellow coup-plotters in the Democrat-controlled legislature are following her in this mockery of democracy — (Demockeracy!). We must do what we can to pressure the legislature to halt this farce.
Believe it or not, the Republicans appear have a fair chance to do this. According to the Secretary of State, Republicans control 25 of the 49 State Senate seats. If the prior State Senate is the one to vote on the certification, it appears that the Republicans certainly have it within their power to stop Gregoire from being certified. Whether the State Supreme Court will step in at this point is an interesting one as there may be a separation of power question.
Of course, the new legislature comprised of democrats can certainly certify the election. The timing of new legislators and senators compared to the governor is an interesting and critical one.
Great. If they are successful, the Republicans could pull this off at least for awhile and stop an elected and certified candidate from taking office without making any showing of fraud in a court room.
How should the democrats respond? They could refuse to certify McKenna and bar him from taking office. Sounds like there is risk of basic democracy breaking down if the Republicans are at all successful in bypassing the courts. It could set a precedent of making it very difficult for minority parties to take office when a majority are in the legislature.
Josef spews:
Erik;
I doubt very seriously the Democratic legislature will be as callous and stupid as to retaliate for stopping Gregovych by stopping the more popular McKenna. That would, God forbid, end Democratic gains in this state in a matter of minutes. That said, I like your post.
What is needed here is for state legislative bosses to come to an honorable agreement to deal w/ the situation. Keep Gregovych out of the loop – because some kind of new election will be the only option. Or at the very least a week-long delay in certification so the Rossifarians can have a week to pull a court contest and accept the result from the State Supremes if need be. Either way works for me – I have faith in my superiors, my fellow troops and my highly-skilled place-kickers (a.k.a. lawyers).
Again, they retaliate like children and slam McKenna – that’s the end of the State Democratic Party. We do NOT want that to happen!!! Too many Democrats voted for RMK!!!

Cynical – If you obtained the emails legally (e.g. through public disclosure requests), then you’re allowed to have them (based on what other people have shown here). See, I can admit it when I made a simple mistake. I didn’t know for a fact those emails were sent through Government email accounts – since you’re the only source of information, I don’t put my faith in its veracity. Given your track record, I have doubts whether you even have the emails, whether you obtained them legally or whether they say what you claim.
You, however, went on and on for weeks claiming to have seen something you either didn’t see, or obtained illegally. So we’re nothing close to equal. You continued to attempt to defend what you knew was either a lie or a crime. So are you a liar or a criminal? Or are you now going to claim it was a “mistake” that you “saw Larry Phillip’s two signatures – the L’s are totally different”.

Lack of training, that’s the whole problem when it comes to our election process, from the top to the bottom and from the bottom to the top. People working the polls are poorly trained, or not trained at all. The people employed in the auditors office are lacking in knowledge when it comes to the maintenance of the voter rolls. The auditors have no knowledge of basic bookkeeping procedures. But, the whole populace of Washington state have segments that don’t know what they’re doing. At the county convention this past fall, another first timer and I started to question the way the election of our legislative district’s delegates was being handled, and found that the vote had been conducted in an illegal manner. Instead of going through another time consuming vote, we compromised by getting a concession that satisfied us. So you see, people muddling through without proper training are EVERYWHERE! I’d say that we all need a “voting course,” before we can vote at a caucus, in a primary, or the general election. The need for training seems strange to me, because Washington state has more elections than any state I’ve ever lived in! WOW how much money does that cost? I’d think one or two a year would be sufficient.

Motomoooo is the alter ego of a cranky fellow, also shrill, who is said to be cynical. Not missed be me.
DCF – I think 90 per cent of King Co. problems are training and supervision -I have been to fast food places with that atmosphere.

It’s interestingly quiet over here? The BIAW has just announced that 52 felons voted in Pierce county in this past election. They researched this pretty carefully by cross referencing court records with the Felon’s address with the Pierce County voter list. They excluded any questionable records, and they checked to make sure that indeed, the felons in question had not had their right to vote restored.
Now this is just Pierce County, and just Felons. They also found dead people who voted.
Folks, please be honest with yourselves. Calling the BIAW liars does not constitute an argument. It’s time that you acknowledge that this election is to close to call given the errors and illegal votes.
I don’t know why you are all so upset and attacking Republicans. A ReVote is a chance to vote anew. Gregoire will be on equal footing and can distance herself from all the problems in King County. She might even win if you get out the vote.
But please stop calling this election a close win for Gregoire because as more and more comes out, it really makes you all look pretty foolish and it hurts Gregoire.

Jeff – Goldy has pointed out several times that calling the BIAW liars is probably too nice. They will glady misrepresent themselves to the public just to get a piece of their agenda passed. So no one here is going to automatically rely on them as a credible source of information. Basically, just because the BIAW says it and presents what appears to be evidence, doesn’t make it so.
It’s amazing how lots of “evidence” evaporates when it actually has to be presented in court.
