It’s been a bird-free day — no Seahawks, no Eagles — so tune in for some political football tonight on “The David Goldstein Show” on Newsradio 710-KIRO, from 7PM to 10PM.
7PM: Do Republicans have a prayer? Seattle P-I political columnist Joel Connelly spent the day checking out the spirit at some of our local mega-churches, and he joins me in the studio to talk about Tuesday’s midterm election, and how the latest sex scandal might impact its outcome. We’ll also be getting a field report from fellow blogger TJ of Loaded Orygun, whose been following some very interesting ballot return trends that could have the red team feeling awfully blue down in the Beaver State.
8PM: Is flipping off the President a fireable offense? An Issaquah school bus driver gave President Bush the finger, and his fellow Republicans cheered when Rep. Dave Reichert took credit for getting the woman fired… credit which Reichert now says he doesn’t deserve. Taking Reichert at his word (that is, his latest word) what does this say about the first-term congressman’s character that he would actually brag about getting the single, working mom fired, when he says he had nothing to do with it? Chris Dugovich from the Washington State Council of County and City Employees will call in to give the driver’s side of the story, and we’ll be playing audio and taking your calls.
9PM: What do you get when you pack four drunken bloggers into the KIRO studio? Will, Mollie and Carl join me almost every week on Podcasting Liberally, recorded live at Seattle’s Montlake Alehouse, and they’ll be joining me in the studio for a Drinking Liberally roundtable discussion of electoral push. Is this the year a big blue wave sweeps the Democrats into power? Or will Karl Rove prove that American democracy is dead, and that nothing short of a violent revolution can dislodge the GOP from the reigns of power? Give us a call and let us know what you think, before all of us liberal bloggers are shipped off to Gitmo.
Tune in tonight (or listen to the live stream) and give me a call: 1-877-710-KIRO (5476).

Reports are coming in about NRCC robocalls in various tight districts. There’s a good rundown on spending reports here.
Since I’m in the 1st CD, I’m not privy to anything happening in the 8th CD. But, one does have to wonder. Perhaps this is something to cover on the show?
Don Joe spews:
I should add that the robocalls are nefarious. They start off saying that they have some information about the Democratic candidate. The call then stays silent for a few seconds to see if the recipient hangs up. If the recipient doesn’t hang up, then the call then goes on to give negative information aboout the Democratic candidate. If the recipient hangs up, then they are called back multiple times (5 in some districts, 7-8 in others). Josh Marshall has several posts on this.

So they think the Dems are making the calls and there’s no one there. How dirty do people have to be to think up these tricks?

Yeah, I heard about the robocalls. Sometimes my fellow progressives keep forgetting the one consistent factor in the last 7-8 years when it comes to the new Republican Party (after Goldwater died in ’98) and elections.
They Cheat. All the time.
And no, it has nothing to do with the obvious sh-t like election 2000. They started to cheat in the late 1990’s, with ex congress critter Tom Delay and “Casino” Jack Abramoff:
Deep in the plea agreements of Jack Abramoff and his cronies is the admission that they conspired to use campaign contributions to bribe politicians; campaign finance is at the core of the corruption. They took great pains to cover their tracks, and they might have pulled it off except for a handful of honest people, and the work of some enterprising print reporters, Senate investigators, and the ethics team at the department of justice. Following the money in this story leads through a bizarre maze of cocktail parties, golf courses, private jets, four-star restaurants, sweatshops – and the aura of chandeliered rooms frequented by the high and mighty of Washington.”

Money was the key, a shake down scheme initiated by Delay, aided by Jack, and funneled thru Glover “Date Rape” Norquist and his phony anti-tax 501 group. Money to buy elections.
Bastards could no sooner win an honest election then pigs could fly. And they are aided by a whore press that gives them a free pass. And yeah, Republicans really, truly would murder their own Mother or pimp their Sister if it would help them win an election. They have no shame.

Where is the new fuel source in Seattle or are they still studing what to do next on taxpayers money?
HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii (AFPN) — State and U.S. Air Force officials gathered here Nov. 2 to unveil Hawaii’s and the service’s first hydrogen generation and dispensing station.
The event marked the completion of a major achievement in a multi-phased alternative fuel vehicle development program that was launched five years ago.
“From the beginning, this has been a partnership between the state of Hawaii and the Air Force,” said William C. Anderson, assistant secretary of the Air Force for installations, environment and logistics.
“We’ve been working together since 2001 to bring this project together and through that effort created the National Demonstration Center for Alternative Fuel,” Secretary Anderson said. “The 15th Airlift Wing, the (Air Force Advanced Power Technology Office) and the Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies have driven this project forward.”
With higher standards for clean air and a need for less dependence on foreign oil, interest in alternate fuels has never been greater.
Increasing energy costs for the Air Force has significantly impacted money that would be better spent on the war on terrorism or recapitalizing the aging fleet.
Hydrogen is one of the key fuels considered for this initiative because it is renewable, abundant and efficient. Unlike other alternates, it produces no emissions.
“It’s great to be here today for such an exciting gathering for such an important subject. Our state is located 2,500 miles from anywhere and we are the most oil-dependent state in America,” said Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle. “The opening of the United States Air Force’s first hydrogen station is a major milestone for Hawaii and for the nation.”
The first phase of this project focused on the development of all-electric, battery-powered vehicles and fast charging infrastructure. Phase II initiated the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles.
In February 2004, Hawaii’s first fuel cell vehicle, a 30-foot shuttle bus powered by batteries and a fuel cell, was introduced. The bus has been operational here for the past two years.
This was followed by two additional fuel cell powered vehicles — a step van and an MB-4 aircraft tow tractor.
The development and commissioning of the DOD’s first deployable on-site hydrogen generation system is a step toward the future for the Air Force, Hawaii, Hickam AFB and the hydrogen economy, according to Mike Mead, chief, Air Force Advanced Power Technology office.
“Today’s Air Force is a deployable force, so we must have the technology developed to support the warfighter wherever they are deployed,” he said. “The on-site hydrogen generation or fuel system is one of those initiatives we are working on.”
In an effort to end this country’s dependence on foreign oil, the Air Force is leading the way.
“The hydrogen experiment is all part of developing domestic assured fuels so that the Air Force can do the job every day that you all pay us to do,” said Secretary Anderson. “And that job, of course, is to win the global war on terrorism.”

Nov. 5, 2006 – Without the help of American servicemembers, today’s verdict against Saddam Hussein would not have been possible, the commander in chief said today in Waco, Texas.
President Bush called the trial “a milestone” in Iraq’s efforts to replace the rule of a tyrant with the rule of law. Today’s verdict, he said, represents a major achievement for Iraq’s young democracy and its constitutional government.
The Iraqi High Tribunal found Saddam guilty in his actions against the citizens of Dujail, Iraq, and sentenced him to death by hanging.
In the 1982 incident, Saddam ordered the military, Baath Party loyalists and interior department police to arrest, detain and torture men, women and children in the town.
Although the Dujail case was the first against the former dictator to go to trial, he is also charged with genocide against the Kurds in the northern part of Iraq in the 1980s.
Bush emphasized the fairness of the trial and the irony that Saddam received protections that he denied the Iraqi people under his rule. “During the Saddam Hussein trial, the court received evidence from 130 witnesses,” Bush said. “The man who once struck fear into the hearts of Iraqis had to listen while free Iraqis recounted the acts of torture and murder that he ordered against their families and against them.”
“Today,” the president said, “the victims of this regime have received a measure of the justice that many thought would never come.”
The former dictator will have an automatic right to appeal his sentence. “He will continue to receive the legal rights and due process that he denied to the Iraqi people,” the president said. “Iraq has a lot of work ahead as it builds its society that delivers equal justice and protects all its citizens. Yet history will record today’s judgment as an important achievement on the path to a free and just and unified society.”
The United States will continue to stand with Iraq’s unity government, Bush said. He praised the courage and determination of the Iraqi security forces.
The president thanked the men and women of the U.S. military for their sacrifices to free Iraq and defend America. “Without their courage and skill, today’s verdict would not have happened,” he said. “On behalf of the American people, I thank every American who wears the uniform. I thank their families and I thank them for their service and their sacrifice.”

10/9/2006 – ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AFPN) — A joint team of Airmen and Soldiers are in Pakistan preparing for Operation Promise Keeping, a follow-up mission to aid the people in remote northern parts of the country, which was devastated by an earthquake last year.
On Oct. 8, 2005, the disaster, which measured a 7.6 on the Richter Scale and centered roughly 60 miles northeast from here, left more than 73,000 people dead, 128,000 injured and 3.4 million homeless.
Two days later, a coalition of several nations formed Operation Lifeline, providing much-needed relief to the people in dire need of food, water, shelter and medical care until the operation’s conclusion in March 2006.
Operation Promise Keeping picks up where Lifeline left off, bringing rebuilding supplies to the people as they prepare for the winter months near the Himalaya Mountains. According to a release from the U.S. Embassy here, the United States has pledged $206 million in earthquake reconstruction assistance to Pakistan over the next four years.
Since Oct. 3, Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft, assigned to the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, have been transporting supplies to Islamabad International Airport.
Together with Army CH-47 Chinook helicopters, aircrews are bringing the materials, including more than 10,000 sheets of corrugated iron for homes in the Allai and Kaghan valleys.
Several members of the Chinook air and maintenance crews were here for Operation Lifeline, bringing their efforts for Promise Keeping full circle, according to Army Reserve Warrant Officer John Roberts, a Chinook pilot and commander deployed from Fort Lewis, Wash.
“We’re back and we’re here to help,” he said. “We’re here to show Pakistanis that America has not abandoned (it) and is still their friend.”
Last year, the people in earthquake-affected areas came to refer to the Chinook crews as “Angels of Mercy” because of the quick and efficient response they provided.
“Pakistan is one of the most important partners in the war on terrorism, especially in Operation Enduring Freedom,” said Warrant Officer Roberts.

10/6/2006 – WASHINGTON (AFPN) — Five years ago, America, still stinging from the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, began striking back in the war on terrorism.
President Bush appeared on national television to inform the American people he had unleashed U.S. military might against the enemy.
Land-based bombers and Navy strike aircraft from carriers launched Operation Enduring Freedom shortly after 12:30 a.m. Eastern time on Oct. 7, 2001, attacking al Qaeda training camps and Taliban military bases in Afghanistan. In addition, U.S. and British ships and submarines launched about 50 Tomahawk missiles.
President Bush ordered the air strikes after the Taliban rejected U.S. demands to close terrorist training camps and hand over al Qaeda leaders operating in their midst.
“None of these demands were met,” he said during his address. “And now, the Taliban will pay a price.”
The coalition focused its attacks on sites used to recruit and train terrorists and help them communicate, aiming to defeat al Qaeda and the Taliban regime that harbored them and to prevent Afghanistan from ever reestablishing itself as a terrorist sanctuary.
President Bush warned that the military action there would be just one front in a long, ongoing attack against terrorism.
“Today, we focus on Afghanistan, but the battle is broader,” he said.
In a message to the Defense Department later that day, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld emphasized that the war on terrorism isn’t a mission the American people went looking for.
“Rather, it was thrust upon us,” he said. “We take these actions in self defense. We take them in deliberate response to the acts of war directed against the American people.”
Five years after coalition forces entered Afghanistan, U.S. officials measure progress in three major ways:
— Al Qaeda and terrorist safe havens are gone;
— the Taliban was removed from power; and
— Afghanistan has a democratic government that sets an example for other countries in the region.
Last month, President Bush marked the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks by noting headway made against terrorists and those who harbor or support them.
“We helped drive the Taliban from power in Afghanistan,” he said during a Sept. 11, 2006, address to the nation. “We put al Qaeda on the run and killed or captured most of those who planned the Sept. 11 attacks, including the man believed to be the mastermind, Khalid Sheik Mohammed.”
While Osama bin Laden and other terrorists remain in hiding, President Bush said, the United States’ message to them is clear: “No matter how long it takes, America will find you, and we will bring you to justice.”
Meanwhile, the United States continues to promote what President Bush calls an equally important aspect of the terror fight: setting conditions that prevent Afghanistan and other nations around the world from serving as safe havens for terrorism. And the best way to do that, the president said, is to promote democracy.
Afghanistan now has a constitution and a democratically elected president, parliament and provincial councils, voted into power by 8.5 million Afghans. Last week, as President Bush hosted Afghan President Hamid Karzai at the White House, he praised the Afghan leader as solid partner in the war on terrorism whose example is helping stabilize the region.
As the United States and its coalition partners help bolster this new democracy, they are also helping ensure Afghanistan’s security forces have the capability to defend their new government. The Afghan National Army is now 30,000 strong and the 43,000-member Afghan National Police continue to take shape.
Twenty-three provincial reconstruction teams operating throughout the country also are helping improve the Afghan people’s quality of life and extending the national government’s reach.
President Bush acknowledged these and other achievements made in the terrorism war during the 9/11anniversary last month, reiterating the call he made five years ago as he announced the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom. He reminded the nation that the terror war won’t be fast or easy, and he called on Americans to unite as they face the challenges still ahead.
“If we do not defeat these enemies now, we will leave our children to face a Middle East overrun by terrorist states and radical dictators armed with nuclear weapons,” he said.
“Our nation has endured trials, and we face a difficult road ahead,” he said. “Winning this war will require the determined efforts of a unified country. So we must put aside our differences and work together to meet the test that history has given us. We will defeat our enemies; we will protect our people; and we will lead the 21st century into a shining age of human liberty.”
RightEqualsStupid spews:
10/25/2006 – WASHINGTON (AFPN) — Winning the war on terrorism in Iraq is critical to American defense, President Bush said today in a White House news conference. Bush spoke about coalition strategy and tactics changes in Iraq.
“Our security at home depends on ensuring Iraq is an ally in the war on terror and does not become a terrorist haven like Afghanistan under the Taliban,” the president said.
America’s goals in Iraq are unchanging, but the methods must be flexible, he said.
“On the military side, our commanders on the ground are constantly adjusting their tactics to stay ahead of our enemies,” Bush said.
“We’re refining our training strategy for Iraqi security forces so we can help more of those forces take the lead in the fight and provide them better equipment and firepower to be successful.”
The coalition has increased the number of advisors in the Iraqi ministry of defense and interior to help the Iraqis plan and execute operations, Bush said. And the United States has changed force structure in Iraq as needed to counter enemy activity.
“Most recently we have moved Iraqi and coalition forces into Baghdad so they can help secure the city and reduce sectarian violence,” he said.
However, after some initial successes Iraqi and coalition operations to secure Baghdad have encountered greater resistance, he said. “Some of the Iraqi security forces have performed below expectations,” the president said. “Many have performed well and are fighting bravely in some of Baghdad’s toughest neighborhoods. Once again, American troops are performing superbly under difficult conditions. Together with the Iraqis, they have conducted hundreds of missions throughout Baghdad.”
But military power cannot win the war alone, Bush said, noting the Iraqi government has to take steps to solve problems contributing to the insurgency.
“In addition to refining our military tactics to defeat the enemy, we are also working to achieve a political solution that brings together Shiia and Sunni and Kurds and other ethnic and religious groups,” Bush said.
Bush delineated a three-step approach to Iraq. First, coalition officials are working with political and religious leaders across Iraq urging them to take steps to restrain their followers and stop sectarian violence.
Second, U.S. officials are helping Iraqi leaders to complete work on a national compact to solve the most difficult issues dividing their country. “The new Iraqi government has condemned violence from all quarters and has agreed to a schedule for resolving issues such as dissolving militias and death squads, sharing oil revenues, amending the Iraqi constitution and reforming the de-Baathification process,” the president said.
Third, the United States is reaching out to Arab states such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan and asking them to support the Iraqi government’s efforts to persuade Sunni insurgents to put down their arms and accept national reconciliation.
Bush called these tasks daunting for any government, but particularly so for a government that has only been in place for just over five months. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s unity government “has to solve a host of problems created by decades of tyrannical rule, and they have to do it in the midst of a raging conflict,” Bush said.
The United States will continue to press the Iraqis to move quickly, the president said. “We’re making it clear that America’s patience is not unlimited,” he said. “Yet we also understand the difficult challenges Iraq’s leaders face, and we will not put more pressure on the Iraqi government than it can bear.”
The strategy as Iraq moves forward is to help Iraq’s government grow in strength and assume more control over its country as soon as possible, he said.
Bush said the American people want to win in Iraq. “They will support the war as long as they see a path to victory,” Bush said. “Americans can have confidence that we will prevail, because thousands of smart, dedicated civilian and military personnel are risking their lives and working around the clock to ensure our success.”

Al-Qaeda
In the last two decades of the 20th century, along with the globalization of the world economy, and to a lesser extent a world popular culture, came the perception of a new phenomenon: a new organizational dynamic among Jihadists which was not organized along tribal, regional or national lines, but saw them organized internationally under the banner of an international Muslim jihad, conducted by extremists who were otherwise unrelated. Among such organizations, the multi-national presence of Al-Qaeda has become most prominent, allegedly responsible for carrying out the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States and many other terrorist attacks worldwide. According to some sources, this organization had been (and may still be) headquartered in Afghanistan, but has members and operatives in many countries.
The argument is put forward that this form of organization allows Al-Qaeda (and analogous groups) to carry out their form of asymmetric warfare (as they see it) more safely, as it prevents an aggrieved nation from launching an overt military attack upon another nation harboring Al-Qaeda members, since a nation can argue that Al-Qaeda might be within its borders but is an independent organization which the government does not support, whether or not the government sympathizes with their cause.
The counter-argument to this states that Al-Qaeda members and other international resistant groups do not exist in “disembodied space” or in international territory (i.e., the open seas, as pirates were claimed to do), but within the borders of a sovereign state, which is responsible for the capture or expulsion of members of such groups, and failure of a state to do this is tantamount to laying themselves open for aggrieved nations to attack them. Under this argument, the state of Pakistan, which refuses to allow US troops inside its territory, can be seen as a practical case in point.
However, there is some debate as to whether this qualifies as asymmetric warfare, as Al-Qaeda and other such organizations, which are not sovereign nations, are not legal combatants under the laws of war. They can therefore be more accurately seen as an international non-governmental paramilitary force, not subject to a command structure as a regular military force is, and (being united as an organization purely as a result of their religious beliefs) not affiliated with any specific nation’s interests or doctrine. They could, however, be seen as an entity separate from issues of government and sovereignty, against which a nation could legitimately wage a war.

GOP Debacle Looms in Governor Races
As we move into the final day of campaigning, public interest remains focused on Congress, where Democrats appear certain to capture the House and have a 50-50 shot at taking a 1-seat majority in the Senate.
Getting much less notice is the fact that Republicans are almost certain to suffer heavy losses in tomorrow’s gubernatorial elections as well. And because most presidents come from statehouses, not Congress, this is significant for future presidential elections. In addition, Democratic control of a governorship makes it much harder for GOP legislatures to gerrymander congressional districts in the favor.
Here’s how it’s looking for the GOP crowd:
“WASHINGTON (Nov. 3) – Democrats are expected to make significant gains in governors’ races on Tuesday, including wins in several battleground states that could give the party an early edge in the 2008 White House race.
“Republicans are defending 22 of the 36 governors’ offices up for grabs on Tuesday, including nine where the Republican incumbent is not on the ballot. Democrats must defend 14 governorships but only one without an incumbent.
“The lopsided political map, and a harsh national climate for Republicans, have Democrats primed to pick up at least the four governorships needed for a national majority and possibly several more. Republicans hold 28 governors’ offices to 22 for Democrats.
“‘It’s a Democratic year, and that is true for governors races as well,’ said Larry Sabato, a political scientist at the University of Virginia. ‘The Democrats had a great map to start with and they are taking advantage of it.’
” … Democrats are favorites in races for five open Republican offices in Ohio, New York, Massachusetts, Colorado and Arkansas.
Other … battlegrounds include Republican-held Minnesota, Maryland, Idaho, Nevada, Alaska and Rhode Island …
“‘Statehouses are absolutely key to electing presidents,’ said Penny Lee, executive director of the Democratic Governors’ Association. ‘They let you bring in resources and organize a state in a way you can’t otherwise.’ …
” … Tim Pawlenty in Minnesota … ‘is the perfect example of a governor who is really being hurt by the political environment,” said Jennifer Duffy, an analyst with the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. Pawlenty’s lead in polls disappeared in the span of a few weeks even though ‘nothing had happened here. There was no major event in the race, it was just the political environment,’ she said. …
“A win in Colorado would continue a Democratic surge in the West exemplified by several other popular Democratic governors favored for re-election in Republican-leaning states in the region — Kansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Wyoming and New Mexico.
“‘There is a possibility for an unusual looking governors’ map heading into 2008, with a solidly Republican South and a band of blue governors out west from Canada to Mexico,’ Musser said.”

WASHINGTON – Iraqi police detained eight suspected insurgents from a government building in Fallujah, Iraq, today, and coalition forces killed an al Qaeda assassination team in Fallujah on Oct. 31, military officials in Iraq reported.
Iraqi police officers detained eight Iraqi local nationals, including three of the Fallujah mayor’s personal security officers, for suspected insurgent activity after receiving attacks from a government building today in downtown Fallujah.
Following a rocket-propelled-grenade attack on the Joint Coordination Center in the heart of the city, Marines from Regimental Combat Team 5 were attacked with small-arms fire from a mosque. The Marines established positive identification of the target, returned fire and commenced to cordon off the area surrounding the mosque. Soon thereafter, Iraqi police officers arrived on the scene and entered the mosque.
A grenade was subsequently hurled at the Marines from a government building near the mosque, so the Iraqi police, with the Marines in support, gained entry to the structure and uncovered multiple AK-47s, ammunition and magazines.
The eight local nationals, seven of whom are employed in the government center, are not authorized by the Fallujah government to bear arms and were detained for further questioning.
In another operation, coalition forces killed an al Qaeda assassination team in Fallujah on Oct. 31. Coalition snipers heard gunshots and quickly responded to the murder of an off-duty Fallujah policeman by gunmen in civilian clothes. The Marines from 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 5, immediately engaged the armed gunmen and killed two of them. The third gunman was killed as he attempted to flee in a vehicle.
“We honor the service of the Fallujah policeman, Hamed Mohammed Jassim,” said coalition spokesman Marine Lt. Col. Bryan Salas. “He stood against the murder and intimidation campaign of the terrorists to help bring security and prosperity to his neighbors in Fallujah. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Assault rifles and other items were recovered from the gunmen.

Compared to the war in Vietnam, the chances U.S. military personnel will be killed in Iraq are significantly lower. With 56,838 deaths over a period of 2,608,650 “person-years of exposure,” the Vietnam “death rate” was 21.8 per 1,000, compared to 3.9 for Iraq. Vietnam was 5.6 times more deadly for deployed troops as Iraq. Reasons cited in the study for the difference are improvements in military medicine, faster evacuation to closer medical care, and more and better body armor. (It is also possible – but not reported in the study – that the nature of the combat in Vietnam was different – and perhaps more lethal. For example, U.S. combat training may now be better, or the enemy may have been more dangerous.)
The number of deaths compared to the number wounded was also higher in Vietnam; 0.24 in Vietnam; 0.13 in Iraq, presumably for the same reasons the study articulated.
The death rates for branch of service in Iraq also vary considerably:
the risk of death is greatest in Iraq for Marines (both active and reserve) at 8.5 per 1,000;
Army (active and reserve) personnel are experiencing 3.4 deaths per 1,000 deployed;
Navy personnel are less exposed at a rate of 0.83;
Air Force personnel are the least exposed at a rate of 0.4.
The average death rate across all services is 3.9.
Put another way, the chance of a deployed armed services member dying in Iraq is one out of every 255 per year.

I want to remind everyone that Reichert is spending your tax dollars to mail campaign literature to 8th District voters.
A blackout on congressional mailings to constituents has been in effect since June because of the election. But this applies only to “mass mailings” defined as 500 or more pieces. So Reichert has been sending 499-piece mailings promoting his re-electiona to targeted micro-constituencies. 130 so far. That’s nearly 65,000 pieces of campaign literature mailed — at your expense!

Roger Rabbit spews:
Reichert couldn’t catch the nation’s worst serial killer for 20 years. Then he ran a corrupt and mismanaged sheriff’s department. Next, as a congressman, instead of representing his district he voted the way party leaders told him to.
Reichert’s 30 years of public service are a good reason to fire him, not a good reason to re-elect him!
How hard is it to figure that out? Apparently too hard for the Seattle Times’ editorial page editors.
Roger Rabbit spews:
The GOP noise machine, which includes the Seattle Times editorial page, claims Darcy Burner doesn’t have public service experience.
Sure she does.
You can’t talk about issues without spending a lot of time learning the issues. That’s public service, whether you’re paid for it, or not. Every voter who educates himself/herself about issues and votes in the nation’s and community’s best interest is a public servant. We don’t have to pay them; they do it because it’s the right thing to do.
Darcy Burner has invested more time and effort in studying public issues so she can represent the public interest than Dave Reichert has in the last two years. He doesn’t spend any time on issues. He just votes the way party leaders tell him to.

Let’s not overlook the fact that soldiers are surviving wounds that weren’t survivable in earlier wars. Let’s not forget that in addition to nearly 3,000 deaths, the Iraq war has produced 16,000 severely wounded. Some of these soldiers have suffered truly hideous, life-altering, permanently crippling injuries — loss of multiple limbs, terrible disfigurement, etc. Some will spend the rest of their lives having to be taken care of by others. It’s not just the deaths. The price of Bush’s Iraq folly also includes the terrible, terrible injuries that soldiers are coming home with.

Come Tuesday, you’re going to be losing a bunch of seats in the House of Representatives. Nothing Diebold or the folks sending out threatening mailings to Democrats or the people sending fake bot calls can do will change that.
Come January, at least one of the Houses of Congress will be controlled by Democrats. Nancy Pelosi will probably be our choice for Speaker.
Doc Hastings won’t be able to stop the ethics investigations of Republicans any more. President Bush will not be able to erode any more of our Constitutional rights through his rubber-stamp Congress.
There’s even a chance that we’ll take the Senate, and if not, then at least Vice President Cheney will find his days to be much busier, casting all those tie-breaking votes, assuming that the remaining Republicans don’t decide that they’re fed up with the direction folks like you have taken their party.

BTW, according to a story in Fortune Magazine, Diebold is taking their name off the voting machines they manufacture and are fixing to get out of the voting machine business. It’s not profitable, and the controversies are dragging down their company’s brand name.
That’s after they fired 5 of the 7 managers who had been running that business segment — they also fired their CEO, the one who infamously promised to “deliver Ohio” for Bush.
Don’t you find it interesting that even Diebold doesn’t want to be associated with Diebold voting machines?

“With a potentially historic U.S. midterm election on Tuesday and the war in Iraq a major issue at the polls, many soldiers said the United States should not abandon its effort here. Such a move, enlisted soldiers and officers said, would set Iraq on a path to civil war, give new life to the insurgency and create the possibility of a failed state after nearly four years of fighting to implant democracy.
“Take us out of that vacuum — and it’s on the edge now — and boom, it would become a free-for-all,” said Lt. Col. Mark Suich, who commands the 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment just south of Baghdad. “It would be a raw contention for power. That would be the bloodiest piece of this war.”
The soldiers declined to discuss the political jousting back home, but they expressed support for the Bush administration’s approach to the war, which they described as sticking with a tumultuous situation to give Iraq a chance to stand on its own.”

To Roger Rabbit and his friends, there are only two worlds left: terrorist free or terrorist controlled. Apparently are for the latter. Why? Below is an article with real names, not one with anonymous entries from unnamed sources!
“Terrorists love Democrats: “By Aaron Klein
© 2006 WorldNetDaily.com
JERUSALEM – Everybody has an opinion about next Tuesday’s midterm congressional election in the U.S. – including senior terrorist leaders interviewed by WND who say they hope Americans sweep the Democrats into power because of the party’s position on withdrawing from Iraq, a move, as they see it, that ensures victory for the worldwide Islamic resistance.
The terrorists told WorldNetDaily an electoral win for the Democrats would prove to them Americans are “tired.”
They rejected statements from some prominent Democrats in the U.S. that a withdrawal from Iraq would end the insurgency, explaining an evacuation would prove resistance works and would compel jihadists to continue fighting until America is destroyed. Of course, donk and islamofascists think alike!
They said a withdrawal would also embolden their own terror groups to enhance “resistance” against Israel.
“Of course Americans should vote Democrat,” Jihad Jaara, a senior member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group and the infamous leader of the 2002 siege of Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity, told WND.
“This is why American Muslims will support the Democrats, because there is an atmosphere in America that encourages those who want to withdraw from Iraq. It is time that the American people support those who want to take them out of this Iraqi mud,” said Jaara, speaking to WND from exile in Ireland, where he was sent as part of an internationally brokered deal that ended the church siege.
Jaara was the chief in Bethlehem of the Brigades, the declared “military wing” of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party.
Together with the Islamic Jihad terror group, the Brigades has taken responsibility for every suicide bombing inside Israel the past two years, including an attack in Tel Aviv in April that killed American teenager Daniel Wultz and nine Israelis.
Muhammad Saadi, a senior leader of Islamic Jihad in the northern West Bank town of Jenin, said the Democrats’ talk of withdrawal from Iraq makes him feel “proud.”
“As Arabs and Muslims we feel proud of this talk,” he told WND. “Very proud from the great successes of the Iraqi resistance. This success that brought the big superpower of the world to discuss a possible withdrawal.”
Abu Abdullah, a leader of Hamas’ military wing in the Gaza Strip, said the policy of withdrawal “proves the strategy of the resistance is the right strategy against the occupation.”
“We warned the Americans that this will be their end in Iraq,” said Abu Abdullah, considered one of the most important operational members of Hamas’ Izzedine al-Qassam Martyrs Brigades, Hamas’ declared “resistance” department. “They did not succeed in stealing Iraq’s oil, at least not at a level that covers their huge expenses. They did not bring stability. Their agents in the [Iraqi] regime seem to have no chance to survive if the Americans withdraw.”
Abu Ayman, an Islamic Jihad leader in Jenin, said he is “emboldened” by those in America who compare the war in Iraq to Vietnam.
“[The mujahedeen fighters] brought the Americans to speak for the first time seriously and sincerely that Iraq is becoming a new Vietnam and that they should fix a schedule for their withdrawal from Iraq,” boasted Abu Ayman.
The terror leaders spoke as the debate regarding the future of America’s war in Iraq has perhaps become the central theme of midterm elections, with most Democrats urging a timetable for withdrawal and Republicans mostly advocating staying the course in Iraq.
President Bush has even said he would send more troops if Gen. George Casey, the top U.S. commander in Baghdad, said they are needed to stabilize the region
The debate became especially poignant following remarks by Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the 2004 presidential candidate who voted in support of the war in Iraq. Earlier this week he intimated American troops are uneducated, and it is the uneducated who “get stuck in Iraq.”
Kerry, under intense pressure from fellow Democrats, now says his remarks were a “botched joke.”
Terror leaders reject Nancy Pelosi’s comments on Iraqi insurgency
Many Democratic politicians and some from the Republican Party have stated a withdrawal from Iraq would end the insurgency there.
In a recent interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, stated, “The jihadists (are) in Iraq. But that doesn’t mean we stay there. They’ll stay there as long as we’re there.”
Pelosi would become House speaker if the Democrats win the majority of seats in next week’s elections.
WND read Pelosi’s remarks to the terror leaders, who unanimously rejected her contention an American withdrawal would end the insurgency.
Islamic Jihad’s Saadi, laughing, stated, “There is no chance that the resistance will stop.” – Moonbats how come the CNNs of the world could not find these Muslims? Or I think they didn’t want to show America the real enemy. They were scooped!
He said an American withdrawal from Iraq would “prove the resistance is the most important tool and that this tool works. The victory of the Iraqi revolution will mark an important step in the history of the region and in the attitude regarding the United States.”
Jihad Jaara said an American withdrawal would “mark the beginning of the collapse of this tyrant empire (America).”
“Therefore, a victory in Iraq would be a greater defeat for America than in Vietnam.”
Jaara said vacating Iraq would also “reinforce Palestinian resistance organizations, especially from the moral point of view. But we also learn from these (insurgency) movements militarily. We look and learn from them.”
Hamas’ Abu Abdullah argued a withdrawal from Iraq would “convince those among the Palestinians who still have doubts in the efficiency of the resistance.” Did you say cut and run emboldens their resistance?
“The victory of the resistance in Iraq would prove once more that when the will and the faith are applied victory is not only a slogan. We saw that in Lebanon (during Israel’s confrontation against Hezbollah there in July and August); we saw it in Gaza (after Israel withdrew from the territory last summer) and we will see it everywhere there is occupation,” Abdullah said.
While the terror leaders each independently urged American citizens to vote for Democratic candidates, not all believed the Democrats would actually carry out a withdrawal from Iraq.
Saadi stated, “Unfortunately I think those who are speaking about a withdrawal will not do so when they are in power and these promises will remain electoral slogans. It is not enough to withdraw from Iraq. They must withdraw from Afghanistan and from every Arab and Muslim land they occupy or have bases.”
He called both Democrats and Republicans “agents of the Zionist lobby in the U.S.”
Abu Abdullah commented once Democrats are in power “the question is whether such a courageous leadership can [withdraw]. I am afraid that even after the American people will elect those who promise to leave Iraq, the U.S. will not do so. I tell the American people vote for withdrawal. Abandon Israel if you want to save America. Now will this Happen? I do not believe it.”
Still Jihad Jaara said the alternative is better than Bush’s party.
“Bush is a sick person, an alcoholic person that has no control of what is going on around him. He calls to send more troops but will very soon get to the conviction that the violence and terror that his war machine is using in Iraq will never impose policies and political regimes in the Arab world.” – Now where did he hear that except from the fringe moonbats!

More thoughts for you Roger Rabbit:
Democrats: ‘No comment’
on terrorists’ endorsement
DNC, Clinton, Pelosi, Kennedy decline
to discuss jihadists’ vote of confidence

National leaders in the Democratic Party, including Howard Dean’s Democratic National Committee, potential House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, possible presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and longtime party stalwart Ted Kennedy don’t want to talk with WorldNetDaily about an endorsement their party has received.
The endorsement came via a WND article by Jerusalem bureau chief Aaron Klein, who interviewed leaders of several prominent Mideast terrorist organizations, including Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and Islamic Jihad.
“Of course Americans should vote Democrat,” Jihad Jaara, a senior member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group, and infamous leader of the 2002 siege of Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity, told WND.
Jaara and others told WND that they believe if the Democrats come into power because of the party’s position on withdrawing from Iraq, that ensures victory for the worldwide Islamic resistance.
But WND was unable to get a single comment from dozens of telephone calls made over two days and messages left with various leaders’ offices and press secretaries.
“I’ll see what we can do,” was the best response WND obtained when asking for a comment on the endorsement, and that came from Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Hammill in Pelosi’s office. It came on the third call to that office.
The Democratic National Committee was approached at least six times, and multiple messages were deposited on a voice mail system handled by the courteous Rosemary, who said, “We’re extremely busy,” but there was no response, even after one spokesman in Sen. Barack Obama’s officer referred WND to the DNC because such a question would be in “Chairman Dean’s” territory.
The Democratic Leadership Council’s response to multiple phone calls was similar, a promise to call back later.
At least three messages left with Sen. Clinton’s office went unreturned after a receptionist forwarded the calls to an answering machine, which informed WND that, “No one is available to take your call at this time.”
Calls to Sen. Kennedy’s office actually reached a live person, who listened to the request and promised, “If we’re able to we’ll shoot you something. We can’t promise.”
Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar’s office generated a merry-go-round of telephone numbers. A call to his Washington office generated a referral to a Denver office, which generated a referral to a press office, which generated a referral to a cell phone. When a spokesman answered that number, the caller was referred back to the press office, which had an answering machine attached to the line. Leave a message.
A call to Sen. Harry Reid also allowed the caller to leave a message.
On the Republican side, Sen. Tom Tancredo, of Colorado, said those Mideast leaders are right – in one way.
He told WND that the assessment by terrorists who suggested U.S. voters choose the Democrats on Tuesday because they believe an expected removal of U.S. troops from the Mideast would hand their factions victory is hard to dispute.
“I guess the conclusion to which anyone could come … maybe they recognize that both the general nature of the Democratic Party and the people who are at its head are folks that would rather cut and run than stand their ground on an issue of this nature,” he said.
“They’re right. I also worry about a lot of things, the way the war has been prosecuted. But beyond Iraq, here’s what I believe. I believe that there are more Republicans than Democrats that understand we are in a clash of civilizations.
“In fact the idea that Western civilization has advantages over other civilizations, that is not a concept that most Democrats would buy into and I think the radical Islamic groups recognize that,” he said.
The president’s recent statements also have given those factions reason to hope for better results under a Democrat Party leadership than the existing decision-makers.
“Our goal in Iraq is victory,” Bush said during a campaign stop this week. “Victory in Iraq will come when that young democracy can sustain itself, and govern itself, and defend itself, and be a strong ally in the war against terrorists.
“The fighting in Iraq is tough, and I understand it’s tough, and you know it’s tough, and so does the enemy. They have no conscience. They kill innocent men, women and children. They film the atrocities, they broadcast them for the world to see. They offer no hopeful vision. The only thing they know is death and destruction.
“But they hope these violent images will cause us to lose our nerve. They make a big mistake. They do not understand the true strength of the United States. We don’t run in the face of thugs and assassins, we’ll defend ourselves,” he said.
Of course Goldie is a no show on this. This blows apart any further consideration who supports cut and run and who is supportive of cut and run!

Leaders of Mideast terrorist organizations such as the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and Islamic Jihad are right – in one way, according to Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.
Terrorists interviewed by WorldNetDaily suggested Americans should vote for Democrats Tuesday, because the party’s plan to remove U.S. troops from the Mideast would hand their factions victory.
Tancredo today told WND the assessment is hard to dispute.
“In fact the idea that Western civilization has advantages over other civilizations, that is not a concept that most Democrats would buy into, and I think the radical Islamic groups recognize that,” he said.
Multiple messages left over the course of two days seeking comment from the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Leadership Council, the offices of Sens. Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton and others were not returned to WND.
The Republican National Committee also did not return a message asking for comment.
The president’s recent statements also have given the terrorists reason to hope for better results should the Democrat Party leadership be in power rather than the existing decision-makers.
“The fighting in Iraq is tough, and I understand it’s tough, and you know it’s tough, and so does the enemy. They have no conscience. They kill innocent men, women and children. They film the atrocities, they broadcast them for the world to see. They offer no hopeful vision. The only thing they know is death and destruction,” Bush said during a recent campaign stop.
“Our goal in Iraq is victory,” Bush said. “Victory in Iraq will come when that young democracy can sustain itself, and govern itself, and defend itself, and be a strong ally in the war against terrorists.
“But they hope these violent images will cause us to lose our nerve. They make a big mistake. They do not understand the true strength of the United States. We don’t run in the face of thugs and assassins, we’ll defend ourselves,” he said.
His comments were on the same subject being discussed by those terrorist leaders this week.
“Of course Americans should vote Democrat,” Jihad Jaara, a senior member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group, and infamous leader of the 2002 siege of Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity, told WND.
Jaara and others told WND that they believe if the Democrats come into power because of the party’s position on withdrawing from Iraq, that ensures victory for the worldwide Islamic resistance.
They rejected statements from some prominent Democrats in the U.S. that a withdrawal from Iraq would end the insurgency, explaining an evacuation would prove resistance works and would compel jihadists to continue fighting until America is destroyed.
They said a withdrawal would also embolden their own terror groups to enhance “resistance” against Israel.
Bush’s comments came on a campaign swing through southern states, where he was stumping for Republican candidates in a mid-term election that could leave either Republicans or Democrats in control of Congress, and terrorists a focal point of many debates.
“We will defeat them,” he promised. “We’ll defeat them because our commanders on the ground have all the flexibility necessary to make sure that we constantly stay ahead of the enemy. We’ll defeat them because we got a fantastic United States military,” he said.
“We will succeed in Iraq because the Iraqis want to live in a peaceful society. Twelve million – nearly 12 million defied car-bombers and assassins and terrorists and went to vote. … And I believe strongly that they’ll become a government of the people, and by the people, and for the people.
“As a matter of fact, I believe the only way we cannot succeed is if we leave before the job is done,” he said.
Bush said Democrats have talked a lot about different plans to deal with terrorism.
“They’ve come up with a lot of creative ways to describe leaving Iraq before the job is done. Sometimes they say, ‘immediate redeployment.’ Sometimes they say they wouldn’t spend another dime on our troops. Sometimes they say the idea that we’re going to win this war is an idea that unfortunately is just plain wrong. However they put it, the Democrat approach in Iraq comes down to this: the terrorists win and America loses,” he said.
But in a statement on their website, the Democrats said, “We will protect Americans at home and lead the world by telling the truth to our troops, our citizens and our allies. We believe in a strong national defense that is both tough and smart, recognizing that homeland security begins with hometown security.”
“Democrats have a plan that is comprehensive – from repairing our military, to winning the war on terror, to protecting our homeland security, to ensuring success in Iraq and freeing America of its dependence on foreign oil – and it will finally prepare America for the security needs of the 21st Century. And we honor the sacrifices our troops, their families and veterans by making sure we take care of them when they come home,” the statement continued.
A new New York Times poll also indicated that Americans believe the U.S. will pursue a “quicker exit from Iraq” should the Democrats be in control. The survey said Americans believe the Democrats “have coalesced around a general position of finding a way to reduce or end American involvement in Iraq” but it also noted “there is substantial disagreement among Democratic Congressional leaders and candidates about exactly how to accomplish that.”
“Nearly 75 percent of respondents, including 67 percent of Republicans and 92 percent of Democrats, said they expected that Americans (sic) troops would be taken out of Iraq more swiftly under a Democratic-led Congress.”
The poll said 41 percent of respondents said they expected that troop levels would decrease if Democrats won control, while 40 percent said the party would seek to remove all troops. Forty-one percent said that they expected troop levels to remain the same if Republicans won, while 29 percent said they thought the United States would send more troops if the Republicans continued to control Congress.
Vice President Dick Cheney has reinforced Bush’s plans:
“Time and time again, we’re seeing examples of Democratic Party leaders apparently having lost their perspective concerning the nature of the enemy we face, and the need to wage this fight aggressively,” he said in a campaign stop this week. “No sharper example can be found than the Democratic Party chairman himself, Howard Dean, who said the capture of Saddam Hussein didn’t make America any safer.”
Abu Abdullah, a leader of Hamas’ military wing in the Gaza Strip, told WND the policy of withdrawal “proves the strategy of the resistance is the right strategy against the occupation.”
Islamic Jihad’s Saadi, laughing, stated, “There is no chance that the resistance will stop.”
He said an American withdrawal from Iraq would “prove the resistance is the most important tool and that this tool works. The victory of the Iraqi revolution will mark an important step in the history of the region and in the attitude regarding the United States.”
I guess John Murtha is right? Wrong!

Still, two public polls gave Republicans reason to be hopeful that they could stave off a Democratic takeover.
Republicans were posting higher marks among likely voters on the question of which party should control the House, a shift one poll attributed to the GOP making gains among independent voters and party faithful becoming more engaged. The independent Pew Research Center found that Democrats now have a four-point edge over Republicans, narrower than the 11-point advantage two weeks ago.

Here is something to wake up the clueless ones in the morning:
http://people-press.org/reports/tables/295.pdf
A nationwide Pew Research Center survey finds voting intentions shifting in the direction of Republican congressional candidates in the final days of the 2006 midterm campaign. The new survey finds a growing percentage of likely voters saying they will vote for GOP candidates. However, the Democrats still hold a 48% to 40% lead among registered voters, and a modest lead of 47%-43% among likely voters.
The narrowing of the Democratic lead raises questions about whether the party will win a large enough share of the popular vote to recapture control of the House of Representatives. The relationship between a party’s share of the popular vote and the number of seats it wins is less certain than it once was, in large part because of the increasing prevalence of safe seat redistricting. As a result, forecasting seat gains from national surveys has become more difficult. …
Republican gains in the new poll reflect a number of late-breaking trends. First, Republicans have become more engaged and enthused in the election than they had been in September and October. While Democrats continue to express greater enthusiasm about voting than do Republicans, as many Republican voters (64%) as Democratic voters (62%) now say they are giving quite a lot of thought to the election. About a month ago, Democratic voters were considerably more likely than GOP voters to say they were giving a lot of thought to the election (by 59%-50%). As a result, Republicans now register a greater likelihood of voting than do Democrats, as is typical in mid-term elections.
The race is tightening up!
Man if you guys don’t win the House under these circumstances, what does that say for Moonbat-Speak and Moonbat-Thought?
