Right-wing news aggregator The Orb reports from the GOP State Convention in Yakima, and has some constructive criticism for Rep. Dave Reichert:
Dave Reichert, U.S. House Rep – He’s a good guy and my congressman, and I am going to vote for him. But I have hard time following him when he speaks. It’s not that he has a bad voice or comes off nervous or unsure of himself – it’s just that sometimes I can’t figure out what his point is. He mix and mingled 3 stories of WTO rioting, riding with Ron Sims in the towncar, and chasing down crooks that got filmed on TV… all to make the point that it’s import “to try”, and how that related to Reagan fighting the cold war. I don’t want too sound mean or picky because he’s a good man and has done a good job for the 8th district and is head and shoulders more qualified than ex-Microsoft executive product manager Darcy Burner, but in my opinion he needs to focus better when speaking to a crowd.
Of course, part of the problem could just be that Reichert simply isn’t all that bright. (At least, that’s what a number of people who know him tell me, Republicans included.) These rambling speeches, they’re not a result of lack of focus Orb – Reichert’s about as focused as he can get. No, they’re a result of a lack of intellect.
For example, did you know that Reichert once had the inside track on the Republican nomination for governor in 2004? The man with the shiny medals and shinier hair had the support of the party big-wigs all lined up. That is, until he appeared before a gathering of these very same mucky-mucks and delivered one of his trademark, higgledy-piggledy soliloquies, displaying an utter lack of knowledge of the duties of office, let alone the issues of the day. A stunned audience immediately started recruiting Dino Rossi.
Why do you think that when he ran for the nomination for the 8th CD, the usually disciplined state GOP atypically tolerated such a crowded and competitive primary, despite Reichert’s huge name ID advantage? Because party stalwarts like Luke Esser and Diane Tebelius had seen him speak before, and they couldn’t stomach nominating such an idiot.
And why do you think that Reichert staged his dramatic walkout from the candidate debates? Because the other guys hurt “The Sheriff’s” feelers? No… because his handlers knew that he would be overwhelmed even by the likes of Tebelius. (I’ve seen her work a courtroom, and I’m telling you, that’s a pretty low bar.)
You want Reichert to “focus better”…? If by that you mean stay carefully on script, well sure, that would help his campaign. But don’t kid yourself about who Reichert really is. That rambling, periphrastic mess you saw on stage in Yakima, well… that’s the real Dave Reichert. Support him if you want, but don’t pretend it has anything to do with competence or intellect.
There’s nothing wrong with being a “dim bulb” in politics. The trick is, you gotta listen to and follow the advice of people who are smarter than you. Why is The Sheriff invoking his close ties to Ron Sims at a GOP event? I thought it odd that he was brushed aside when the Governorship opened up, and after hearing the man speak, I was suprised the GOP went with him for Congress. He’ll be doing a whole lotta cue card reading this fall.
The trouble is that when a blue-collar Rep. sees and hears Reichert his negatives become a plus in the dimwit mind.
Shit…odds are, the Republicans are going to put this numbskull up for President. (I mean, given their track record…)

I worked on the Patty Murray campaign, starting when we thought Jennifer Dunn would be the opponent. That matchup looked to be a tough one, and we raised a ton of money to wage the battle.
Then Dunn dropped out, and who the hell was this Nethercutt guy? He seemed like a nobody, although he’d been in Congress for nearly ten years. His only claim to fame was that he’d unseated a sitting Speaker of the House with a term-limits rant, that he later broke himself.
We went undercover to attend the KC Republican Lincoln’s Birthday dinner in 2004 to try to get some idea of what Nethercutt would be like as a candidate. But, Jennifer Dunn was put on the program at the last minute, and George merely gland-handed. The Karl Rove speech was instructive, though.
Nethercutt was a rube. He didn’t even talk in his campaign ads, he was a nebbish, a nitwit. Patty Murray was a warm, well spoken and competent sitting Senator, and Nethercutt ran against her like he was the front-runner. He got clobbered 43% to 55%.
If the GOP has such smart people in it, why don’t they run for office?

Dave Reichert was a lead detective and often head of the Green River Task Force until 1990, nearly 10 years, but he chased the wrong man for 3 years while 37 more murders were committed by Gary Ridgeway. Davie ignored the only survivor in his obsession with Melvin Foster, a Tacoma cab driver. Foster, finally went public taunting the Sheriff’s department and Reichert to “lay an egg or get off the nest”.
Sheriff Dave wasn’t stopped by the law from going after Foster, only embarassment.
It was the DNA evidence gathered from Ridgeway in 1987 that matched up with DNA taken from the Green River victims that finally tripped Ridgeway up.
Reichert, a dandy in front of the cameras, just took more credit than he deserved with his silver hair and jaunty uniform.

In the first place, Cyn, we DON’T all have equal access to the same public services. You can buy more congressmen with 500 thou a year than you can with nothing a year.
However, taking your question as a purely mathematical one, 30% of $500,000 is $150,000 and 30% of $0 is $0, so — since they’re both paying the same percentage of their income to government in taxes — it’s perfectly fair.

You were trying to explain away how you made 100% + gains on a number of stocks in your portfolio while only managing to return a meager 8% on your portfolio. Or to put it another way- Harry Truman argued the job of US President wasn’t one that you needed extraordinary special talent for- that many people could do it. Ms. Burner’s running for Congress, not an executive position. Plenty of people have gone into elective office straight from private business- so why not judge Mr. Reichert and Ms. Burner’s policy positions, debate peformances and resumes on a collective basis before we cast our votes, and THEN decide?
We’d have lost out on some pretty good Presidents if we elected based on resume. For instance, the first Republican President LOST two Senate campaigns, a re-election bid for the House, and was basically a country lawyer, one-term Congressman and state legislator.

She hasn’t led some organization that bettered the community through her actions or her fund raising skills. Did she started this group, or increase its scope dramatically, or personally recruit scholarship candidates? I still contend she sat around gossiping and drinking coffee.
No offense to the Spaatz organization, but 1) she never even mentions that she spent a year in the Civil Air Patrol or won this award, 2) there is no reference to how associates are awarded this honor, and 3) she got this in 2005 for a year of service in 1989. It sounds to me like she applied for it and got favortism to have it awarded. Notice the others on the list? They are active or retired military with many years of experience. She looks a little out of place here. Maybe that’s why she doesn’t mention it.
Like I said, I’m waiting to be convinced that I should vote FOR darcy, not that I should vote against reichert. Reichert’s record stands for itself, there are plenty of reasons to vote for him based on his experience. Darcy, on the other hand, is a blank slate. The only reasons I have heard on this site to vote for her is that she isn’t a repub, she is 35 years old, and she is a woman. Oh, and she is smart. As for me, my only regret is that I don’t live in her district to vote for her. She’s smart, committed, and competent. She has not only succeeded in everything she’s ever tried, she’s excelled. She has reached out to her constituents and asked them to evaluate her on her merits, and everyone who has met her has been impressed. She hasn’t assumed she’s entitled to anyone’s votes; she’s out there earning them.
