Chris Grygiel is reporting in the Seattle P-I’s blog, Strange Bedfellows, that the latest Elway Poll shows Sen. Maria Cantwell holding a huge lead over challenger Mike McGavick.
In a head to head match up, Cantwell leads 52 percent to 23 percent, the April survey found. Twenty-six percent of those queried were undecided. The poll of 405 registered voters in Washington state had a margin of error of 5 percentage points. In February, the poll found Cantwell ahead 55 percent to 25 percent, with 20 percent undecided.
When Aaron Dixon, Green Party candidate, is included in the April poll, Cantwell leads 47 percent to 25 percent, with 2 percent going for Dixon. Twenty-six percent were undecided.
Hmm. Other recent polls seem to show Cantwell with a lead of less than half that, so I’m not exactly sure what explains the discrepancy. If I get my hands on a copy, I’ll provide further analysis. (Hey… I’m always open to some wealthy benefactor buying me a subscription.)
McGavick doesn’t have traction. I wonder why a $14-million-a-year insurance CEO’s “I’m for kids’ health care” pitch doesn’t resonate with voters? Hmmmmm. I’ll have to think about that …
Having thought about it, I’ve concluded the fact McGavick belongs to the same party as Dino Rossi might be a part of Insurance Mike’s credibility problem. Rossi kicked 40,000 kids off health care when he wrote the state budget.
Naturally, anyone smart enough to pull down $14 million a year for screwing his policyholders with the lowest claims-payout-to-premiums-collected ratio of all the hundreds of insurance companies doing business in our state can figure THAT out.
Maybe that explains why McGavick’s TV ads don’t say he’s a Republican. Apparently he’s hoping voters will think he’s a DEMOCRAT.
These Elway poll results simply don’t make any sense. It is bad enough to show Maria Cantwell with a 29 point lead over Mike McGavick, when Rasmussen and other pollsters have the lead around only 8 points.
But the change in results when Aaron Dixon was added to the poll really takes the cake. It is understandable for Cantwell’s numbers to drop, as some voters might choose Dixon instead of Cantwell.
But why would McGavick’s numbers increase by 2 points? If a voter has been given the choice between Cantwell and McGavick, many of them chose either Cantwell or undecided. Why would at least 2 percent from the Cantwell and undecided voters switch to McGavick, when the same question is asked again, with Dixon also being among the choices?

Police labor union officials asked acting Chief Christopher McGaffin this afternoon to allow a Capitol Police officer to complete his investigation into an early-morning car crash involving Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), son of Sen. Ted Kennedy.
ROLL CALL reports: According to a letter sent by Officer Greg Baird, acting chairman of the USCP FOP, the wreck took place at approximately 2:45 a.m. Thursday when Kennedy’s car, operating with its running lights turned off, narrowly missed colliding with a Capitol Police cruiser and smashed into a security barricade at First and C streets Southeast.
“The driver exited the vehicle and he was observed to be staggering,” Baird’s letter states. Officers approached the driver, who “declared to them he was a Congressman and was late to a vote. The House had adjourned nearly three hours before this incident. It was Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy from Rhode Island.”
Baird wrote that Capitol Police Patrol Division units, who are trained in driving under the influence cases, were not allowed to perform basic field sobriety tests on the Congressman. Instead, two sergeants, who also responded to the accident, proceeded to confer with the Capitol Police watch commander on duty and then “ordered all of the Patrol Division Units to leave the scene and that they were taking over.”
A source tells the DRUDGE REPORT: “It was apparent that the driver was intoxicated (stumbling) and claimed he was in a hurry to make a vote.
“When it became apparent who it was, instead of processing a normal DWI, the watch commander had the Patrol units clear the scene. The commander allowed other building officials drive Kennedy home.”
This morning’s incident comes just over two weeks after Kennedy was involved in a car accident in Rhode Island.

And take out the 5-8% GOP bias in Rasmussen’s robo-poll and you basically have the same numbers as Elway. So the numbers seem consistant.

Dismiss Elway at your own peril, Richard. Elway is a reputable, independent outfit that understands the state and uses real live Both Strategic Vision and Rasmussen are partisan firms.
Strategic Vision has a reputation of monkeying with their sample to skew the results. As JDB points out, their ideological composition doesn’t jive with the reality on the ground.
Rasmussen is much better with developing a fair sample than Strategic Vision, but they use auto-surveying rather than a real live person.
And no matter who you believe, McGavick spent an awful lot of money to still be 10 – 20 points behind.
Driving with one’s headlamps off at 0245, narrowly missing a cop, and crashing while making a U turn aren’t exactly the hallmarks of a sober, or even a skilled, driver. When the driver claims to be late for a vote in Congress three hours after adjournment for the night, even Officer Homer Simpson might get suspicious. When officers at the scene are prevented from performing field sobriety tests, and are hastily replaced by superiors who tell them to “leave the scene,” one might be forgiven for surmising that another worthless scoundrel was going to get away with it for the hundredth time.

Your point is well taken, K @ 48. Even in the fairly small town where I live there has been a dramatic balkanization of what simplistically be called the left. Activists have increasingly engaged in knock-down, drag-out, holier-than-thou battles that have the effect of splitting the vote (and making movement-wide cooperation much more difficult).
It’s quite frustrating, because logic often has very little to do with it. The dominant factor seems to be an increasingly strong need to bond with one’s pack. An activist group will do this by, for example, talking itself into a frenzy about how a left-leaning elected official has “gone to the dark side” because they voted wrong on an issue or two.
The right wing contributes to this trend with its white-and-black rhetoric. A lefty may strongly disagree with a specific view of a winger, yet unconsciously adopt their highly dualistic rhetorical techniques — which invariably get pointed at fellow lefties once an ideological inpurity is discovered.
Because of these dynamics, I don’t think that Cantwell supporters can talk Greens out of voting against her. Indeed, most efforts are likely to backfire (particularly when folks like Goldy get condescending). However, I wouldn’t worry too much about the Greens. They really blew it in their selection of a totally incompetent candidate.
