It turns out, Rev. Ken Hutcherson never had a boycott organized to pressure Microsoft, Boeing and other corporations that support anti-discrimination legislation. But yesterday he told the AP that he did have a plan all along: to urge people to buy up the companies’ stock and then dump it all on May 1, to drive prices down.
Uh-huh.
[Rev. Hutcherson] says he wants to use the stock market to make a political point. But one market expert laughed at the idea.
“The chances of him being successful with that are slim to none, and slim just left town,” said Hans Olsen, chief investment officer at Bingham Legg Advisers.
Yeah, but the chances of him becoming the target of an SEC investigation are pretty darn good; such a conspiracy to manipulate the market is likely illegal. Whatever.
“For me to ask people not to buy their product would be stupid,” Hutcherson said. Instead, he wants his supporters to buy one or two shares over the next few months.
Yeah… sure… because that would be, um… “smart.” Forget for a moment that by Hutcherson’s own logic, if selling Microsoft stock en masse would drive the stock price down, then buying the stock en masse should drive the price up, resulting in a net impact of… nada.
But the most obvious problem with Hutcherson’s plan is that Microsoft has over 10.6 billion shares outstanding, with a total market valuation of about $280 billion. Over 63 million Microsoft shares are traded on a typical day. Large institutional traders would never “gamble their money on a political statement,” and even if Hutcherson’s fantasy stock boycott could manage to dump a few million shares (and it can’t,) the market wouldn’t even notice.
Apparently, Hutcherson is not only a bigoted, blustering liar, he’s also an idiot… and he’s being roundly skewered for his latest plan. John Aravosis at Americablog quips that the Right Wrong Reverend is “not exactly a walking billboard for intelligent design,” while Eli Sanders of The Stranger wonders if Hutcherson’s followers “may come to constitute one of the dumbest classes of investors in the market place.”
Last year, at the height of his anti-gay celebrity, eastside Rev. Ken Hutcherson told the New York Times that his grand ambition was to become ” the most feared man in America.”
Would he settle for the most laughed at man in America?
I suppose there’s always the maxim that all press is good press, but when it comes to publicly making a horse’s ass out of himself, Hutcherson is beginning to make our old friend Tim Eyman look like a fucking statesman.

Good for them
Nice to see young Roger Rabbits have some balls. Can you imagine a College Republican standing up for something they believe in? Hah hah. If they did, they’d be on the ground in Iraq.
Left Turn spews:
This was exactly my take on it and today I plan to send a letter to the US Attorney as well as the SEC asking for a criminal investigation. As a Microsoft stockholder, I have standing and Hutch’s actions may be criminal. Man what I wouldn’t give to see this piece of shit in jail! HE HE!

Hutcherson is a good example of why no one should take religion (especially Evangelical Christianity) seriously. Just follow the Golden Rule, and you’ll be good to go.

Getting back to my intitial comment to belltowner…..
Put your money where your mouth is or shut up.
There is no way that Darcy, I’ve already forgotten her name, will unseat Reichert.
If I’m wrong, I’ll pay your rent one month, if you are wrong you pay my mortgage for a month?

No. You douches don’t pay up. Now stop asking.

There were two options. Put your money where you mouth is or shut up.
You are too much of a pussy to back yourself up, so this should be the last you post on this site.
Now go away…..

Beyond the “evangelical” …try “dominionists”. It cuts accross several religions with the stated purpose of making America their brand of Christianity or destroying it in the trying.

I have a feeling you won’t be here long. Just a feeling.
Belltowner spews:
The most shameful thing about Hutch is how he makes his religion a servant of partisan politics. God is not a Democrat, or a Republican. He’s quite arrogant considering his political aims are a failure.

Now isn’t that something?! A Klansman shaking hands with a black man. Goes to show anything is possible when people set aside their prejudices and adopt liberal attitudes.

Religion and politics, when mixed, isn’t always so bad. Religion must be tempered by democracy. Besides, where would we be if Martin Luther King, Jr. had not mixed his religion with politics?
Momus spews:
Now a question that was brought up in my Church several months ago….
Politics may be seperate fronm religion, however, at what point was religion not involved with Politics?
Belltowner spews:

Much like a conservative to believe that a vote can possibly be “wasted”.
The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object. -Thomas Jefferson

Hutcherson must have been fortunate to be able to play football in college, because math evidently isn’t one of his strengths, to say nothing of economics or ethics.
If indeed the meek shall interit the earth, this guy is going to be in a world of hurt.
Bezore spews:
#21 I stand corrected Belltower. Change that to church and spolitics, not religion and politics.
Religion and politics results in people like Martin Luther King.
Church and politics results in a-holes like Hutcherson.

Commander Ogg spews:
I think about Congressman J.C. Watts when ever the subject of the latest stunt by the Reverend Ken comes up. They both believed, for what it’s worth.
A while ago there was a problem a prominent Black Republican was having working with his congressional party. Congressman J.C. Watts, the third in command in the Congressional Republican delegation, announced that he would not run for his congressional seat again, but that he wanted to spend more time with his family. That is politically correct language for something else. The word from those who knew said that Watts was often into arguments with Republican members who did not want to respect his position in the House. Not only was there a disrespect of his position but also of his person. And although he held the position of third in command, that position did not carry with it the power it normally does when a white–the regular Republicans–is seated in it. Also, he had fights with Trent Lott; remember him, the Strom Thurmond loyalist? Apparently Republicans wanted Watts to be as much of a figurehead as he was a token. They wanted his presence only as an indicator that Republicans were an inclusive party and thereby attract the Black and Latino vote. Although Watts was willing to play the CP game in his departure, he was not willing to endure for long the disrespect of party members.
The RNC, state and national is very pleased to have them both play their part, if it furthers the conservative movement.
They (RNC) can claim the mantle of inclusiveness, while denying minorities any real role in national policy. Sad.
Ken In Seattle spews:
hmm
Democrats are not known as non violent as far as I know. The vast majority of Vetrans of WWII were democrats and there are more and more Democrats being made in Afganistan and Iraq as we speak.
My wingnut brother in law seems to have had a change of heart since his son took an APC through the window of his humvee in Kandahar. It was an armor piercing round and it passed through and exploded on the outside. An when that same Brother in law (MasterSargent Airborne) came back from his latest tour in Bagdad he sent me a cryptic note and a wmv file of Bushs lies and verbal gaffes. I am gonna let him think a while before I help him get involved in taking the country back and I expect him to do it as a Democrat. If he cannot stand to become a Democrat (Texas family issues) then I will help him become the best Republican he can be. He is capable of kicking the shit out of some chickenhawks in his heavily military district.
And just because I am old and fat :) does not mean I forgot how to shoot or throw a knife. I may be 270 but I am still 6’4″ and my spectacular ugliness is my most effective weapon. :)
also re Hutchinson. The last 4 times the theocrats have tried to take over the country, ridicule was the weapon that was most effective at repelling them. Keep it up Goldie and let us know when we can hold a laugh-in at the Revs next public appearance.
Another TJ spews:
Ken, my brother-in-law is regular Army, and it’s interesting to see how Iraq has changed the political dynamics of the military. The truly fascinating changes, as you suggest, are in the attitudes of the military families over things like body armor and deployments (and if you want to see someone REALLY pissed off about deployments, talk to the families of people in the Guard and Reserves).
Belltowner spews:
@ 35
Regardless of politics, it was basically assumed that the GOP would atleast give the boys all the equipment, armor, etc they needed when they were drafted and sent to some faraway shithole. How times have changed!

I’m a pretty laid-back guy, but the way our “leadership” screwed over the military really brings my blood to a boil. So much incompetence, so little time…
