Light posting today as I work on something big… I probably won’t be done until later tonight. In the meanwhile, feel free to use this post as an open thread.
Now KC can be recognized with other locales in the US who have been recognized for flood planning, such as…..New Orleans!
Or, New worries in the Sims campaign over recent poll numbers have the HA-for-Sims team in full brainstorming mode. Think…what could a horsesass do to energize the voters? http://www.azcentral.com/offbe.....18-ON.html
Perfect!
Ironman e-mailed me (and the rest of his supporters) saying that “We have become aware of a fund raising effort by the Voter Education Committee (VEC) for $150,000 to begin an independent attack campaign against David. Ron Sims’ campaign must feel they are in deep trouble to ask for help. The VEC’s urgent request for radio money tells us that Sims knows he is losing ground.”

Josef, please answer Honestly (since you are all about honesty):
We are asking each of you who are reading this e-mail to help David Irons one last time before the General Election. If Ron Sims gathers the financial support he’s asking for then he will be able to launch his major negative radio campaign. We can not afford to let this happen – especially in these last days when David’s victory is so close at hand.
Please help us with our final media push. Right now, we are purchasing David’s radio and TV spots for the last three weeks. But we can only air these commercials if we have the cash on hand to do so.
David needs your help right now. Please visit our website and make a generous contribution today. Every dollar will be used towards the broadcast buys David needs over the next 20 days.

Since this is an open discussion, I’d like to suggest something here:
I read yesterday’s nonsensical diatribe by this site’s creator saying this, “So to all you proto-Naderites out there, I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to pull your heads out of your asses and join me in the real world, where believe it or not, there really is a difference between Democrats and Republicans.”
What is sad about this for someone that actually knows better but instead manipulated the information that he gave out, was that Goldie knows that a) Nader WAS NOT A GREEN (never was), and b) that not everyone that votes for Gentry Lange is a green.
I personally despise Nader, but after knowing Gentry for a decade and more, all during this time Sims has been at the head of King County’s government, Sims is still promising to look into doing things that he has not done for a decade, while Gentry not
only has plans, but WILL institute his plans.
Goldie – why have you not asked Ron Sims why he is AGAIN this election period promising action on issues such as traffic reform? Why has Sims not done in his last few terms the things that he (again) talks about taking action on now? Have you ever asked him that?
Goldie – I also am against a third party, but I am a realist. I know that as long as professional politicians know that the left will always vote for them, they can do less than they’d otherwise have to.
Gentry Lange is forcing Sims to deal with Sims’ continued inaction. Gentry is forcing Sims to deal with Sims’ (purposeful?) mistake in bringing Diebold into our elections. I myself asked Ron Sims at one of the debates why he did this when there was so many obvious issues with Diebold, only to have Sims say, ‘We don’t have Diebold machines, just the databases’, which we all know now are incredibly easily hacked in 90 seconds. Or, does Ron not know this? When I explained this to him and Larry Gosset, Larry was interested and amazed at this info, while Ron seemingly didn’t want to hear any more about it.
Goldie – why not hold Ron up to the same level of expectation as the expectation that you have for someone that you are not a strong fan of?
Here is my challenge to you:
Why not ask 10 questions (Maybe have your readers pick some of the questions?), and have all candidates for the King County Executive answer them and post those answers on your site?
Get involved Goldie, don’t just cast stones.

Huh??? You will have to clarify what you mean by this statement, since Nader was a candidate for/endorsed by both of the organizations** calling themselves the Green Party in 2000.
**National Assoication of State Green Parties—nominated Nader as their Presidential candidate in 2000. The Greens/Green Party USA endorsed Nader in 2000; they changed their name to Green Party of the United States in 2001.

Hey there DJ @ 13 –
When I said that Nader was never a Green, you are correct that he was the Green Party candidate, but he never was an official green party member. In fact, as I recall, he never even signed up to be an official Green during the election. I’ll have to check on that, and I could be wrong about that, but if my memory is correct, he was just the candidate, and that’s it.
And, to the Irons guy – I am here because Goldie is a big Sims proponent, so I am interested in hearing why Goldie has this opinion and to offer simple suggestions on how Goldie could get more involved in this election. What I am not here is to specifically promote Gentry Lange. Gent is a great guy, but he can promote himself. I have met David a few times, he seems nice also, so let them promote themselves, and let’s save this space for more discussion and less promotion.
So, everyone here from Seattle – what questions would you like to see Goldie ask Lange/Sims/Irons? Let’s hear your thoughts.
Here’s my first question:
To all the candidates – do you agree that an open and fair election is a high priority for the King County Exec, and if so, how is it possible that proprietary software by Diebold or any other company possibly can result in an unquestionable open and fair election, especially when there are many options for open-source, publicly owned software available today?
Who else has a question?

“Will your family members be voting for you (those registered under a proper address, their actual address, only registered once, still living, non-felons, county residents)?”
Yes, indeed a question that cuts both ways. One candidate’s family seem to go to extremes to support him.
The other candidate’s family (well, at least his Mother, Father, and one sister) will not vote for him. He must be one bastard to his family to earn that kind of support!

But, but, but, but … I though that the whole family disolution thing began when Irons backstabbed a long-time family member by running against him????
There seems to be a parsimony issue here: Three of his family are backstabbers, or one person (Irons) has done bad things to his family. Hmmmmm…which one is the simpler (or more likely explanation)?
“The guy’s not Saddam – he doesn’t have a reign of terror (or if he does, that’s in your mind).”
Well…you might have a point there, Josef. I mean, nobody has ever accused him of torture, have they? Have they?
Well, I don’t take most of them for much credibility. I do though have to remind you that SecState Sam Reed has been moderately critical of Dean Logan and was shocked at the extent of the mess. I also believe the primary evidence* that SoundPolitics.com is posting…
*For those who forgot their social studies: Primary evidence is first-person, secondary evidence is second-person or third-person such as if Goldy or a MSM reporter reports on an event….

“Councilor Jane Hague’s people put the website together. This is a joint op w/ the Dunn people, too.”
I had a moderate Republican friend who worked for Jane Hague when she ran KC Elections. He said she was out to lunch most of the time, and out shopping for shoes the rest of the time. At least Hague was better than GOP/KVI darling Julie Ann Kempf, who was almost as adept at running down a cop as she was preparing for an election.
If Rossi had won the Gubernatorial race by five votes after two recounts, with all the typical glitches, not a single right winger would be calling for Dean Logan’s head. Not one.
Funny how this newfound GOP love for clean elections is based purely on frustration… and a grasp on power that slipped from their boney white hands.
That same editorial said, “We don’t have the answer. But we ask because we lack full confidence that either Logan or his boss, King County Executive Ron Sims, will seize leadership to end the repeated injustice of mishandled ballots.”
Okay, bit about me: I have taken up the Honest Elections banner because I think the people of King County should enjoy what I enjoy in Skagit County: Namely an elected auditor who lives among us and is accountable to us.
I don’t think that’s right and I think the people of King County – not Tim Eyman, not the legislature and not me should have the last word. It’s their future – all I can do is counsel from the sidelines and help the team I favor with $$$.

Oh…I see. You don’t give credibility to the professionals (i.e. people who work in the same field as Logan). Josef, a slightly post-pubescent kid with a couple of years of “higher education” knows better.
“I do though have to remind you that SecState Sam Reed has been moderately critical of Dean Logan and was shocked at the extent of the mess. I also believe the primary evidence* that SoundPolitics.com is posting…”
Ummm…Josef. Being mildly critical is reasonable. But, Reed was critical of many other auditors as well. Reed also recognized that the transition to a new computer system hit King County the hardest because of the volume of ballots handled over a several day period. The criticism I heard by Reed didn’t seem out of line, but it wasn’t “FIRE THE BASTARD!” zelotry.
“For those who forgot their social studies: Primary evidence is first-person, secondary evidence is second-person or third-person such as if Goldy or a MSM reporter reports on an event…. “
For Josef, who forgot his SCIENCE, possession of ballot envelops is, in some sense, primary evidence. However, Sharkansky seems to be (1) doing a lot of tea-leaf reading (a.k.a. assumptions from) marks on documents that he doesn’t seem to full understand, and (2) forgetting the most important part: we need to know how many items he has inspected that are CORRECT, in order to properly understand a rate of errors. Nobody, but nobody imagines that King County (or any county) had zero errors. The important thing is documenting a _rate of error_.
So far, Sharkansky has just been posting a collection of rare oddities—the four-leaf clovers, if you will. That ain’t science. Back to 10th grade for you, son.

Comeon, Josef, don’t be so simple. That is the Kool-aid line. Of course, he is accountable. But, he is highly qualified for his position and does a damn good job–even under fire from ignorant idiots like you, who really have no clue about it.
Kudos to Sims for having the leadership and instincts to stand up to the bullshit GOP smear campaign against Logan.
The biggest road building package in the history of the State of Washington would end with passage of I 912. (Also note that major environmental groups have endorsed the No on I-912 campaign because the projects are right, finally.) And where is the state’s biggest road promoter, Kemper Freeman – a man who has invested countless hours and over $1 million promoting a crackpot roadbuilding fantasy over the past several years? He’s silent – so far.
But John Carlson – Kemper’s chief promoter, is desperately attempting to steer some of Freeman’s millions into Carlson’s anti-road campaign called I-912. How so? The best clue is Carlson’s latest op-ed in the King County Journal, in which he tries to spin the I-912 campaign as an attempt to reverse the last 30 years of transportation policies that saved the shoreline of Lake Washington from becoming another I-5 and prevented new mega freeways across Puget Sound and through the foothills of the Cascades.
In his last column – Carlson attempts to paint I-912 as the key to moving Kemper’s bizarre obsession with roadbuilding to the next wacky phase – and somehow create a train wreck that would convince people to end transit funding and just build a ton more roads. Its insane, yes. But nobody knows Freeman like John Carlson. And Carlson is desperate for cash to support his latest vanity campign called I-912. He also knows that Freeman is the king of the last minute contribution. It’ll be fun to see whether old-man Freeman takes the bait this time.
In his desperation to raise cash – Carlson may also be veering the I-912 campaign into a messageless morass. The campaign has lost all focus, creating an opening for a last minute miracle that would save the state lives and billions of dollars. Everyone knows I-912 support is driven mostly by rising gas prices – even though none of the gouging does one thing to improve traffic. MSM should be on alert. The only message from a successful I-912 campaign. The reason Carlson is trying to spin a different message is to tap into Freeman’s wallet. And Freeman just might be vain enough to bite.
If Freeman were more sane on transportation subjects he’d recognize that I-912 is the biggest possible threat to realizing his transportation dreams. But its hard to blame him for making stupid and destructive judgements outside his excellent business acumen. His family has a history of extremism when it comes to politics. The old generation didn’t want any Japanese people around these parts. For the current generation, the hateful extremist passion is not having any quality transit around.
Guess I was right – no principles regarding elections. Used to be the Democrat Party was the guardian of the voting box against vote suppression.

Instead, you have an appointed auditor who lives in Olalla, Kitsap County and is accountable to… well, no one.”
First off, the County Council changed the code in 2003 requiring that the top two positions at KC Election be subject to confirmation, and Dean Logan was confirmed UNANIMOUSLY by seven Democrats and six Republicans, including Jane Hague. Better luck next time, Joseph.
Second, while I’ve read quite a few fruity things which have spewed from Joseph’s deviated mind recently, this “residency requirement” idea takes the cake. From now on, let’s all base our opinions on where somebody lives, starting with Joseph:
Joseph, the fact you live in your parents basement should disqualify you from communicating with normal and sane people.
Your source is apprently wrong and you know it. Logan had not in 2003 committed the errors and the like he did and others did under his command in 2004 and 5.
What do you stand for?

LiberalDavespews:
Well, looks like Brownie’s still making the headlines.
…
Wednesday, August 31: Much of New Orleans is underwater when a FEMA official inside the Superdome sends an urgent BlackBerry message to his boss, director Michael Brown:
“…the situation is past critical… hotels are kicking people out, thousands gathering in the streets with no food or water… estimates are many will die within hours,” writes Marty Bahamonde, who was sent to be Brown’s eyes and ears within the city.
Bahamonde tells Senate investigators he doesn’t remember getting a response to that e-mail, but later was forwarded this one, which shows Brown’s press secretary fretting about Brown’s dining plans for that evening.
“…it is very important that time is allowed for Mr. Brown to eat dinner,” she writes. “Given that Baton Rogue is back to normal, restaurants are getting busy. He needs much more [than] 20 or 30 minutes.”
…
Bahamonde expressed his frustration about the “dinner e-mail,” responding:
“OH MY GOD!!!!! Just tell her that I just ate an MRE and [went to the bathroom] in the hallway of the Superdome along with 30,000 other close friends, so I understand her concern about busy restaurants.”
Let me explain why you need an elected county auditor who lives in your county and hope you catch on:
*When a county auditor is elected, they have to answer to their constituents about the department.
*When a county auditor is elected, they have to actually reside in their constituency.
*When a county auditor is elected and serving a constituency, their vote is in the mix too.
*When a county auditor’s vote is in the mix along with those of their constituents, then they value the preservation of the votes cast as much as possible from fraud and other foul-ups.
“Well, David Irons is against 912. Can you believe that?!? ”
Looks like Irons is doing a little bit better than he did last year, when he whined and moaned about Sims cutting a road project in his district. Turns out, Irons supported the Eyman initiative that cut tens of millions out of the county road budget, including funding for his own district.
So, Irons may be a stupid zombie, but at least he learned you can’t build roads without revenues – the hard way.

“Besides, you guys, what is so wrong about:
*Demanding no more double voters
*Demanding that only legal votes are counted
*Demanding that every vote have a voter, preferably legal”
Because DEMANDING such things is uninformed. No election the size of the one in KC is without errors. This is not my opinion. This is fact. Political scientists and statisticians study error rates in elections–it is practically a whole field onto itself. People are always working on decreasing the error rate though better technology and systems. Without doubt, the error rate last year was manifold times smaller than the error rate 50 years ago.
Fortunately, the errors almost never matter. In this election, the errors did not matter. Why? Because for every error the favored Gregoire, there was an error that favored Rossi. This is known with great statistical certainty. I have the data; I’ve duplicated and verified the results found during the election contest trial.
To blame this on KC, when there were offsetting errors in almost all counties, is just plain ignorant. All counties had errors; the errors offset one another statewide. The overall error rate was low in the whole state (and in KC).
The fact that you ignore the statewide nature of the problem shows how brainwashed you have become.

“He “Brownie” is the Dean Logan of FEMA. ”
Actually, Joseph, you probably already know the foibles of Bush’s NW FEMA appointee:
The fact is that at the time of his appointment, John Pennington knew no more about emergency management then he did brain surgery. He got the job because Jennifer Dunn Like him. Period.
Then, of course, many of us became privy to a fax sent out by Pennington’s wife, making numerous allegations against him concerning domestic violence and abuse.
The fax, from “Valerie Ann Pennington,” dated 11 June and addressed to, among others, the Governor and the State AG, and CC’d to both Senators Murray and Cantwell, was faxed to a variety of officials in both parties.
The fax says, in part, “I am the spouse of Region 10 FEMA Director, Department of Homeland Security, John Edward Pennington… on January 13, 2005, I… filed for restraining orders against my husband of fourteen years. Since that date I have filed for divorce and provided evidence to the court of a neck injury sustained during an assault from my husband on September 7, 2004. I have also provided evidence of repeated violations of existing restraining orders by Mr. Pennington, and statements from witnesses of his verbal abuse and violent temper.”
None of this has been published that I can find… but hey, it’s out there.
——————–
Just before his appointment, Pennington received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from California Coast University in Santa Ana, Calif., which at the time was an unaccredited correspondence school.
The school is now accredited.
In testimony before Congress last year, investigators for the General Accounting Office identified California Coast as a diploma mill. […] GAO special agent Paul DeSaulniers told The Seattle Times this week that his investigation showed that California Coast University sold degrees for a flat fee.
If error is okay, then principle does not matter to you.
Seriously. Genuinely. Because if principle can be weakened to the point of being meaningless, then there is no principle.

“Is this code for his opposition to felon suffrage”
I not exactly sure what you are getting at here. The state law is clear about re-enfranchising (recent) felons. The county cannot do anything about the state law. Additionally, the state is taking over distributing felon information in order to minimize votes by non-reenfranchised felons.
“and support for photo ID?”
That is a small part of it. Sort-of the easy, mechanical part. But, I accept that this will eventually happen. It is HOW it will be handled that will be the difference between disenfranchising some demographics or doing it in a way that maximally preserves people’s voting rights.

“What about making things better as in where’s the turnaround team, Ron? The man is incompetent”
Here again, I hear anger talking loud and clear, and not a factual analysis. How the fuck would YOU know whether things are better in the KC elections office? I mean, KC STARTED OUT PRETTY DAMN GOOD! Sure, we found errors when the election was thrown under the microscope (but not many by the standards of other elections studied to this extent). Many of these errors will be corrected–that is the great benefit to all counties of having gone through the election contest. Most of the counties will have much better procedures in place. (Remember, many of the counties had embarassing problems during the contest).
” and needs the King County Council – namely the same one Dean Logan hides stuff from (I have sources from the press and staffers too) – to give him AAA bond ratings and the like.”

“Will your family members be voting for you (those registered under a proper address, their actual address, only registered once, still living, non-felons, county residents)?”
Yes, indeed a question that cuts both ways. One candidate’s family seem to go to extremes to support him.
The other candidate’s family (well, at least his Mother, Father, and one sister) will not vote for him. He must be one bastard to his family to earn that kind of support!

Where’s Kemper Freeman?

First off, the County Council changed the code in 2003 requiring that the top two positions at KC Election be subject to confirmation, and Dean Logan was confirmed UNANIMOUSLY by seven Democrats and six Republicans, including Jane Hague. Better luck next time, Joseph.

Is this code for his opposition to felon suffrage and support for photo ID?
That aside – he starts playing unfair, I fully expect your unprincipled groups to sue his Administration. In fact, an Irons Administration would be good for you. Financially speaking, that is.
LiberalRedneck spews:

Oh that’s right, you have no principles.

“That aside – he starts playing unfair, I fully expect your unprincipled groups to sue his Administration. In fact, an Irons Administration would be good for you. Financially speaking, that is.”

What about making things better as in where’s the turnaround team, Ron? The man is incompetent and needs the King County Council – namely the same one Dean Logan hides stuff from (I have sources from the press and staffers too) – to give him AAA bond ratings and the like.

Okay then I do support photo ID. $25 photo ID from the Department of Licensing (see HERE) may be a poll tax to some, and I’d like that removed. Unless idiots lose theirs.
Let’s give David Irons a fair chance. Hey, where’s the turnaround team Ron?!?

“I’ll trust principles, procedures and punishments that crack down on this crap. No excuse for finding ballots – that’s like finding $$$ at a bank.”
So, I don’t understand your principles. You seem willing to vote for someone whose own father questions his honesty against someone who has a proven track record of making the county a better place, under pretty tough financial times. Strange principles, you have.

Figures Josef was a Talmadge Democrat at one point. That guy was a loony as they come. So, you are going to stand by your man, there, Josef? Even if he beats his mother?
Puddybud spews:
Evergreenrailfan: The tracks laid out in the tunnel were not insulated. The power from the tracks will electrocute everyone around the area because the engineers on Sound Transit didn’t correctly lay out the insulation materials. So all the track must be ripped up. Also the track as I understand is not the correct type so it must be replaced. Regarding the Airport Terminus; did you all know that when you park your car to take the train to get to the airport, you can not leave your car there overnight? Ask your friends at Sound Transit. I recently learned this and it makes the project more stupid. You can’t park your car there overnight. That’s a real useful terminus.
