On April 10, Seattle Times readers learned that acting U.S. Attorney Jeff Sullivan once called undocumented immigrants “wetbacks,” and that he was admonished from the bench for blowing a murder-consipiracy case by withholding evidence from the defense.
Sure, the Times piece was more thorough and evenhanded than mine (though to be fair to me, I did link to all my source material,) but still… three weeks?
I’m just sayin’.

My Maternal Grandfather was a largely self-educated man. He studied waht amounted toan early correspondence course in general engineering with particular emphasis on electrical engineering in the 1890’s. He raised a family of 9 surviving children by helping to wireup early Seattle.
He formed the habit of reading early in life, and throughout his adult life he read between fifteen and twenty five foreign english language newspapers per week. To his death, he clung to his cathedral radion with its three shortwave bands, even when he could only occasionally get a broadcast on those underutilized frequencies.

Seattle Times & Sonics Arena: Price Deflation
If you go to today’s Seattle Times web page, you’ll see a photo of the Renton site for a proposed $500 million Sonics arena; and below the photo, you’ll see the following cutline:
“The new owners of the Sonics and Storm have reached an agreement with a developer to acquire a 21.2-acre parcel of land in Renton owned by Boeing. The team is still not sure if state lawmakers will support a bill that would provide $200 million toward the new arena.”
Now read that second sentence again. It says “$200 million.” Last time I checked, Sonics owner Clay Bennett was seeking $400 million, not $200 million, of public subsidies (and the other $100 million won’t come out of HIS pocket). Far as I know, nothing’s changed — Bennett still wants other people to give him a half-billion-dollar facility without spending a penny of his own money. Well, hell, that’s how rich guys get rich, ain’t it?
So what’s the deal with this “$200 million” figure? Is it a typo? Has the state contribution been cut 33%, from $300 million to $200 million, as the bill wends its way through the legislative process? I can’t tell.
You see, when I click on the photo to read the article, there’s no mention in the article itself of how much the public financing will be. (The Times apparently doesn’t want to draw attention to it.) And while the photo is still there, that mysterious sentence, “The team is still not sure if state lawmakers will support a bill that would provide $200 million toward the new arena” has disappeared.
Don’t know what to make of it. But my Bullshit Detector is clanging like a fire alarm.

If I may take the liberty of posting on topic for a moment, as Yakima County Prosecutor, Jeff Sullivan had a reputation for never seeking the death penalty, no matter how heinous the crime. And Yakima — a major transshipment point for illegal drugs — has plenty of heinous drug-related murders. For example, in one case a few years ago, two guys went to a drug dealer’s house to bump him off but he wasn’t home, so they killed his kids instead. Even in that case, Sullivan refused to seek the death penalty.
Why? Because death penalty cases are more expensive and difficult to handle. To impose the death penalty, you not only need to convince all 12 members of the jury to convict the defendant and vote to kill him, but you also need a picture-perfect trial in order to survive the inevitable appeals. And the appeals can soak up staff time and office resources for 15 to 20 years. If a prosecutor decides to seek the death penalty, the chances are the sentence won’t be carried out until he’s long gone and a successor (or two) has taken over the prosecutor’s office.
Sullivan just couldn’t be bothered. Or he didn’t have the patience. Or he didn’t have the cajones to hit up the Yakima County Commissioners for the extra funding his office would need to handle death penalty cases.
So far as I know, Sullivan never once sought the death penalty during his 27-year run at Yakima County. The message to criminals: Lure your victim to Yakima and kill him there, instead of in one of the neighboring counties, or in Seattle or Tacoma or Spokane. It was literally a Get-Off-The-Gurney-Free card.
Any law-and-order rightys inclined to jump on the Sullivan bandwagon (for whatever reason) might want to think again. As a law-and-order liberal, I have reservations about Mr. Sullivan. Yes, he’s an experienced and (usually) competent prosecutor. Buuuuut … I happen to support the death penalty for a few select cases. Unfortunately, there are a few people who are so vicious, whose crimes are so horrific, that no other penalty seems adequate. In my gut, I feel there are times when society ought to express its outrage by killing the perpetrator, because anything else devalues the lives of the victims and brushes off the suffering the killer inflicted on them. I’m talking about torture slayings here, and mass murders, and killers of elderly people and infants.
Sullivan is saying, in effect, the death penalty is too much trouble. I disagree. It was worth millions of dollars to kill Ted Bundy. Whatever it cost to kill Charles Rodman Campbell — it was worth it, and I paid my share gladly. The Carr brothers — who escaped their death sentences on a legal technicality — should have been killed even if it took an army to kill them. That’s just the way I happen to feel about the most callous, unfeeling, vicious murderers, as exemplied by these subhuman scum (and others like them).
The fact Sullivan has spent his entire career giving a free pass to these rats, because it was too expensive or too much trouble to try to kill them, grates on my law-and-order sensibilities. He can be the best prosecutor in the world in other respects; but this raises the question of whether he’s just too fucking lazy for the U.S. Attorney job.

Too bad Mr. Cynical didn’t listen to me when I told him to buy it at 58. It’s now 82, and still going up. NOV’s profits doubled in the last quarter. Rodger, I must vehemently disagree with you about the death penalty. Vengeance is never a proper reason for the death penalty. It, at its base, is deriving enjoyment over the pain and torture of another being. It may be satisfying temporarily, but it blights the soul and turns you into that which you sought vengeance against.
That being said, I am also an ardent defender of the death penalty. It is not about Vengeance. It is not about Retribution. It is not about Deterrence. It is the final defence that society can utilize inorder to defend itself from one that choses to live outside of its standards. It should never be treated lightly, but unless we choose to eliminate free-will, a far worse offense imho, it must always be allowed for.
