Greetings to All,
I am emailing you all to alert you of an event that will take place on the UW-Seattle campus next Tuesday, April 15, 2008 from 10am-2pm. The event is called “Find an Illegal Immigrant Tag” and will be held on the HUB lawn. The UW College Republicans will be tabling from 10:00am to 2:00pm and the game itself will be held at 12:20. According to a message from the CR president, the event is intended to send a a “clear statement that we need to get serious and crack down on illegal immigration and secure our borders.”
I am inviting you all to attend this event and TAKE A STAND AGAINST anti-immigrant messaging on campus [and everywhere]. We all agree that the immigration system is broken and is in need of reform. However, fair and just immigration reform does not entail the scapegoating of immigrants and/or hateful actions–both of which thwart efforts to create open discussions on real solutions to immigration. Instead of engaging in divisive politics/ conversations, we should be uniting to promote justice, acceptance, and opportunity.

May I suggest the UW writer who used the word racist in his title is the real racist. Cracking down on illegal immigration isn’t cracking down on a race, it’s cracking down on a behavior.

The rhetoric on this topic is so overheated. I, for one, am a Democrat who thinks deporting people here illegally isn’t the worst thing we could do. I will not for one second believe that they don’t hurt wages for working Americans and aliens here legally. In fact, if you are a legal alien resident in the U.S. the illegals hurt you economically and culturally more than anyone because you have all the same challenges of acclimation they have, but the employer can pay them half as much. AND you will be associated by society with your illegal bretheren since you look and speak “just like them.” In fact it would be hilarious if large numbers of illegal residents were granted the amnesty they so desire. What they would suddenly find is that they were being turned out of their jobs for illegals. Why? Because one of the big costs companies avoid by hiring illegals is not just the higher hourly wage, but the taxes and regulations that go along with legal employees. The day a person becomes a legal resident, his or her cost to the employer doubles. Adios, Juan, I can hire Jose for half the price.
What’s next? Those racist republicans asking for murderers to be caught and brought to justice? Soon to be followed by rounding up all child molesters. But Will is right, when will the republicans ever learn. Illegal immigrants = illegal democrat voters On a side note… Did anyone see how the professionally the polygamists were apprehended? Nothing like that military supported human BBQ under the clinton in waco.

For one thing, that’s a separate and much more serious offense. Secondly, the tax collector either can’t tell the employees are illegal or doesn’t care. But it’s not only employers who want illegals to stay. Social Security actuaries want them here, too. The taxes they pay are going to support the rest of us in our old age.

Do the Republicans really want to do anything about illegal immigration? No, the financial interests which really control the party don’t want to do anything which reduces their supply of cheap labor. That’s why even the Republicans couldn’t form a consensus last year on the immigration issue.
That doesn’t mean, however, that they won’t try to ride that issue back to popularity, especially among blue-collar workers. Their polling indicates that blue-collar workers consider their jobs threatened by illegal immigration and offshore out-sourcing. They want to try to harness that fear and anger in order to win elections, even while they avoid doing anything about it.
They’ve done the same thing with the Evangelicals for years. Using abortion, homosexuality, and prayer in the schools as hot-button issues for them, they raise billions of dollars and utilize the ready-made heirarchal organizations provided by churches to support the Republican party. But they never really do anything about these issues other than talk a lot. In fact, the last thing they want is for these issues to be resolved in their favor – then they would be left having to explain why they are so poor at governing and fiscal management.
Of course, Republicans say they can’t do anything about these issues because of all the “liberal judges”. It’s all hogwash, of course. Republicans have held the White House for 20 of the last 28 years, and their judicial appointments now control the federal court system. They could even remove some of these cases from the jurisdiction of the federal courts (Article III original jurisdiction, vs. Article I jurisdiction conferred by Congress). But the Republican agenda has always been about supporting their financial interests first, and all their political capital will be expended only to support tax cuts, privitizing social security, etc.

Arizona has a law on the books cracking down hard on employers and landlords who engage undocumented immigrants. As a result, many are already fleeing the state. I think this could be an excellent experiment — truly clear one state of undocumented workers and then see what happens. Do unemployed citizens step up and take all the jobs previously held by the undocumented, or does the economy grind to a halt? Or something in between?

We’re a post-industrial nation at this point and if you look at where wealth and job creation are in things like biotechnology where if you don’t understand basic science like evolution you’re ahit out of luck.

I agree that if you really want to stop illegal immigration, you need only to treat it the same way you do stolen property – the person using it is strictly liable, and has the burden of proving that they didn’t know it was illegal.
In employment terms, this means that we need to (a) have a reliable way of confirming if the potential employee has the right to work in the U.S. (it’s not that hard); (b) make a few arrests of very big CEO’s, complete with a “perp walk” as they are led into the paddy wagons through a gauntlet of photographers; and (c) make sure the CEO’s spend at least a year or so in jail, and forefeit most of their personal property as proceeds of a criminal interprise (just like we do to drug smugglers).
By imposing strict liability on the CEO’s, you can get around the common practice where they impose limitations upon their low-level managers, requiring them to perform an unrealistically high level of production for an unrealistically low level of cost. “Underperforming” managers are fired regularly, as an example to others. The CEO doesn’t have to tell anyone to hire illegals, or to require employees to work off the clock – it’s just that everyone knows there is no other way to meet the goals imposted on the low-level managers.
But the heads of large corporations are usually pretty good at getting the benefits of cheap labor, while insulating themselves from responsibility. A simple tactic is simply to outsource the labor – all work below a certain level is provided by an employment agency under contract. Then you would have to prove that the CEO knew the employment agency was hiring illegals, a much harder task. But we can close that loophole, too, by making the CEO responsible for ensuring compliance of all companies which supply labor under contract.
The estimated cost of exporting 12 million illegals is 42 billion dollars.

When the subject of illegal immigration comes up, one of the first things that people talk about is “securing the border”, and how we need this big wall to keep folks out.
Of course, nobody seems to be trying to build a wall up in Blaine, so perhaps just a few of the folks that are so upset might want to check themselves for a tinge of racism.
While I think that the Arizona method will end up costing Arizona more than it benefits anyone, I’ve got more sympathy for that method than for the “round ’em up” crowd. Many employers are abusing their undocumented workers, using the threat of deportation to keep them under control.
It’s hard to condemn someone for crossing the border to provide a better life for his family, even when they do so illegally. If the employers didn’t hire them, they wouldn’t come.
And if the employers couldn’t safely hire them, then those same employers would be lobbying for changes to the immigration laws that actually made sense.
