Yesterday, we won nearly every race in which I was emotionally invested… the governor’s race, the statewide ballot measures, most likely Peter Goldmark, and of course, the White House. Everything except for Darcy Burner in Washington’s 8th Congressional District.
At this point Darcy is trailing Reichert by less than one percent of the vote, but there are tons of ballots left to count, so I really can’t predict this one way or the other. What seems clear is that Darcy did very well with the early absentees, and Reichert did very well with poll voters. That shows a clear trend in Reichert’s favor that we can mostly attribute to the rank partisan work of the Seattle Times and their decision to assist Reichert in smearing Darcy’s educational record during the final weeks of the campaign. And that’s simply pathetic.
That said, both camps should be very nervous right now. Later today, and possibly tomorrow, after more early absentees are counted, Darcy will likely regain the lead… and then over the next few days, as the late absentees are added to the tally, that lead will likely slowly ebb away. To what degree either of these predictions hold true, if at all, depends on turnout and the partisan composition of yesterday’s electorate, neither of which we know enough about yet from the ballots that have been counted in the district thus far.
What I can say in that regard is that looking at the governor’s race the statewide electorate appears to have trended at least somewhat more Democratic than the pollsters had predicted. And that gives me reason for hope.

I actually am a bit optimistic here…I really think Darcy will pull this off. Of course, it won’t be by much, but enough. All the late polls have been fairly accurate…let’s hope that remains.

It isn’t a matter of finding all the votes. It is a matter of counting all the votes that were cast.
Wingnut, rethugs conveniently forget that Florida in 2000 they stopped counting before all the votes were tabulated. Whereas with Cantwell, Gregoire, they followed the law and made sure all legally cast votes were counted.
In 2000 Senate race and 2004 Governor race, votes were counted precisely how they are supposed to be counted. Florida 2000 was a theft.

King County was unable to use their shiny new counting machines, because the Bush bureaucracy was slow in certifying the machines.
Pierce County is using new software and dealing with 2 ballots per voter because of their new ranking system for the local races.

Given that he’s already the property of Mr. Sinkhole’s buddies at BIAW, I see two possibilities:
a) BIAW ponies up to cover it. After all, he’s not running for governor any more, so they can give him whatever amount they want to.
b) kneecapping or some other form of termination with extreme prejudice.
The amount of provisional ballots yesterday was simply staggering. I would not be surprised to see the figure reach 20-25% of ballots cast. The worst part was that many of the provisionals were cast by long-time residents of the district I was in and were somehow purged from the rolls by Reed and co. There are a lot of votes out there so there really is no way to claim victory one way or another.
In 2004, When I still lived in Seattle, the University District, my absentee ballot was challenged because my signature didn’t match. What the hell?! In 2006, same exact thing happened, and this time I went to special effort to match it exactly. Now that I live in Seatac, my absentee ballot went sailing through the system without complaints.
A good question is exactly who is challenging these signatures? And do more challenges come in Democratic strongholds like inner Seattle?
