I’ve been sitting by my computer all day, waiting for Dino Rossi to state his position on Initiative 912. He doesn’t call, he doesn’t write… I’m beginning to take it personally. But my bruised feelers are nothing compared to the hearts he’ll break in the business community should he sit silently by and permit the anti-roads initiative to pass in his name.
As we all now know, the polling data puts the fate of I-912 — and the transportation package it would repeal — squarely in Rossi’s hands. If he publicly states his opposition, the initiative loses. If he remains silent, it will likely win.
If Rossi wants to lead this state, now is a good time to start. He owes it to voters, and to the business interests who finance his campaigns, to take a stance on the most important issue on the November ballot… an initiative that is as much about him as it is about taxes or roads.
And so I will patiently sit here and await his answer… “Where’s Rossi?”
Rosi is keeping his mouth shut and letting Chrissy make an ass out of herself. He will have plenty of time to speak come 2008.
Must be a slow news day and/or a bad week for the fringie donks: Goldy has to resort to dragging a private citizen through his muck in an odious attempt to shame him into taking a public stand.
Somehow, I just don’t think Dino is too worried about Goldy holding vigil in his name.
Dino has no horse in this race kiddo, although he appears to have a few horses asses harassing him.
Dino is hoping I-912 will be defeated without him having to do the one thing he can’t do: actually lead.
Abd when it passes, his support will fry up faster than you can say “eastern washington doesn’t fund any politicians election”
In other words “Dino is Done. Stick a fork in him.”
The natural progression of an inability to pass statewide gas taxes for use in King County (and other places) will lead us to a division of existing gas taxes on a per capita basis within the counties they were procured. With depopulation in rural counties all over the country, counties will have a difficult time just keeping up rural highways with the subsidy provided by state government (by King, Sno. and Pierce). Let’s end rural roads welfare as we know it!
So Goldy, are you going to be honest with your readers here and tell the truth about who conducted that poll?
In case you don’t I will fill in the details.
One of the groups in on that poll was the Washington State Labor Council. That’s right. Since they spent so much money getting the Governor of their choice (regardless of whether any of us feel the election was valid or not) they should be asking her for leadership on this. Don’t you find it interesting that now they’re running around trying to pressure Dino into saving their cause (i.e. all those projects to create more union jobs)?
Quid pro quo! They should have thought about needing Dino before they sent out mailings attacking they guy. Lobbiest learn to play both sides of the fence for a reason. Maybe the WSLC should think about that for once.
The other groups who funded the survey, (I think it was Boeing, AWB and someone else) gave money to bothsides.
Anyone who knows anything about anything already knows Dino would not have supported a 9.5 cent gas tax. He repeatedly talked about letting the nickel package work and restoring public faith before asking for more money. He would not have put an emergency clause on. He also would not have supported money for King County’s mega-projects without an actual plan in place.
Go to the http://www.access.wa.gov and look up the Senate voting roll call. You will notice that Dino originally voted against the nickel package, until it was amended to add accountability for dollars and detailed plans for listed projects.
So to answer you question “Where’s Dino?”, I don’t know, I know where he is not. He is not on the payroll of the WSLC. He is not standing over the shoulder of Gov. Gregoire and second guessing her every action. (I think we can all agree that would be bad). He is not recieving a public paycheck, so there for he is not accountable to you or I. He is not actively out campaigning (and don’t pull your little, he has a 2008 campaign filed, you know what I mean by campaigning).
You took part in helping to elect Gov. Gregoire. If you wanted Dino to fix transportation in this state then you and 130 other folks should have voted in Gov. Rossi to do so. Why aren’t you out asking why Gov. Gregoire doesn’t show leadership on the transportation issue. Why doesn’t she explain to the public why the 9.5 cents, emergency clause, etc… is necessary? She only lives in a huge, three story mansion, makes $120K a year, has private drivers, etc… all funded by the taxpayers. I doubt coming up with a comprehensive plan to fix transportation is to much to ask.
I got hit by Goldy’s filter when I tried to point out who conducted the survey and why the whole “Where is Dino?” thing is such a farce.

Without all these projects, a ton of union jobs stand to go bye bye. After spending so much money attacking him and helping getGov. Gregoire elected, now they are begging Dino to bail them out without admitting it is them trying to do it.

But I can tell you that the vast majority of their money comes from the business community. That’ll be damn clear on the PDC reports once the money comes in.

It sounds like we’ll wind up saying “where’s was rossi?” when he might have actually really mattered and had a real chance to imrpove things.
The P.I.E. guy is right about one thing – it took years to persuade Dino to fix the roads, and every year he dithered costs went up and we got further behind. His reason for not fixing the roads for years: “I’d support a gas tax increase if the polls showed that the voters would, and they don’t.” Dope.
The one thing he really proved was that a statewide GOP candidate who actually finally did vote for a gas tax to fix the roads did far better in the race for Governor than any GOP candidate in something like two decades – and actually had a real shot. Carlson, Eikenberry, Williams, Craswell – were all out performed in spades by the only one of them to support a gas tax increase: Rossi.
Goldy, we’ll be waiting for Dino for a very long time – unless he wakes up. And in the meantime, the costs will go up, the state’s competitive position will go down, we’ll lose jobs and opportunity for our kids, who will drive on roads that could be far more safe….if we weren’t still waiting for Dino, to exhibit any leadership.

P.I.E. is right about one thing – the costs of road projects skyrocketed while Dino Rossie waited for about a decade to finally support a gas tax increase to fix the roads. As a Senator representing a District with huge road needs, Dino refused for years to support any new gas tax to pay for them – his line went something like this: “i understand the need and its relationship to the safety and economic security of people, but the polls show voters don’t support an increase in the gas tax, so I’m a no vote.”
And P.I.E. – it is possible now to do an accounting of the status of projects funded with the nickel – I understand that roughly 80 of those projects are either finished or under construction. All Dino has to to is read the regular status reports available on all the projects. Or, how about having him get an accounting of how much money is accountability measure saved all of us and compare those savings to what we’ll save by paying more for projects by delaying them, as opposed to voting against I-912 and getting things done sooner. Dino can fulfill his campaign promise and oppose I-912.
I suspect Goldy will ultimately be asking “where was Dino?” when he had a chance to make a difference and fix the state’s roads. And that I-912 will need to be defeated without him.

Gotta respectfully disagree with your premise – a poll done by a campaign is almost always suspect. If Keep Washington Rolling’s poll shows the 912 race as close, rest assured it is actually passing handily. The main use for that sort of poll (whenever it is done by an interested party, at least) is to look like you’re in the game so you can raise money – that $2 million you cite in campaign funds for a no on 912 campaign being a perfect example.
I just don’t think a statement from Rossi means shit in this context – not that I don’t think he’s a chump for punting on taking a position (after all, that is what statewide leaders – or people who are considered leaders, at least – do).
That said, Cynical outdid himself in sheer douchebaggery with the anti-semitic post @14. In the words of your esteemed Vice (in name only) President – go fuck yourself.

calling someone a house nigger is an insult to YOU, not to descendants of former slaves. Lucite: My ohter post ahead of this is in the bin. I guess you missed the ABC News welfare cheat story of 35 blacks in Arkansas who were caught cheating the welfare system. One lady had her daughter act stupid so she could get additional aid. Then when the daughter was caught having a very lucid conversation with the interviewer, she admitted her momma said to act that way. When the momma was caught, she was totally unrepentent.
