First, it would probably be more accurate to ask, “Why do white middle and lower income people often vote with Tim Eyman and oppose progressive tax reforms?” I’ve never seen any evidence to suggest that people of color have this voting pattern. In fact, my data geek friends at Win/Win did a quick analysis and didn’t find any Eyman initiatives that passed in precincts dominated by non-white voters.
Huh. Now that’s an interesting bit of data analysis that at the very least says something about Eyman and the image he projects.
Tim Eyman’s a figurine the statists use to deflect attention from their anti-progressive anti-democratic agenda.
Democrats in this state are the worst.
— The two US senators voted in support of indefinite detentions in GITMO, no right of habeus corpus, and military trials.
— The state and local D’s impose the most regressive taxes of anyplace in the country, and they are inefficient at providing services in comparison to their peers. TRY finding anyplace else that puts a 1.8% sales tax for transit on people and we have no better transit service than peer regions (in some ways it is worse) – local government is brutal when it comes to transit taxing.
— The judges are corrupt: they lie about citizens’ claims when those claims threaten revenue streams of governments.
— The Dem’s are corporate whores – they give huge tax breaks to corporations.
Goldy – bringing up Eyman shows you have zero perspective on how poorly government is run when it comes to serving the needs of people. It sustains itself well here – maybe that’s what you’re mostly concerned with. Eyman poses no threat to the bureaucracy/Democratic Party. He serves its purposes well, actually.

I read this post and instantly had questions about the analysis by Win/Win. First, there aren’t too many precincts in Washington State dominated by non-white voters, so the data to begin with is pretty limited. Second, these non-white precincts are in our state’s major urban areas, which on balance vote against Eyman’s initiatives anyway.
So how many non-white precincts are there in our state? And how many of those fit the demographic profile of anti-Eyman precincts when race is not included?
We do have a social welfare state — and the recipient of ‘other people’s money’ wears a tophat and sports a monocle.
The upshot of the Republican plan is a caste system based upon inherited wealth. If, as Thatcher worried, with socialism, you eventually run out of other people’s money, then somebody else has got the money.
Thatcher’s intent is that it remain in the same corpselike hands it’s been in for centuries. It’s a recipe for stagnation that our forefathers fought a revolution for.

It’s neat how little you seem to know about running a business. Businesses charge their customers what the traffic will bear, not their cost plus some arbitrary profit margin. So when the cost of labor goes up, they absorb the loss from their profits. If there is no margin to absorb the loss…THEN they might try to raise prices. If their competitors are paying the same wage increase, they will likely get away with the increase. For the wage earner, the tiny increase in the cost of goods and services produced / provided by minimum-wage workers is nothing compared to wage increase. Historically jobs are not lost due to minimum wage increases.
As for what happens when nobody has money…the scenario you’re talking about is called DEFLATION and it’s a very very bad thing. It can result in a downward spiral as prices drop, making people wait to make purchases to see if the price will drop more. Less sales means more layoffs, means less money in consumers’ hands means lower prices.

For example, certain non-white groups have a high percentage of non-citizens who are ineligible to register to vote.

The Seventh Day Adventists I have known are generally into not judging because they’re too used to being judged themselves. So, I’m kind of curious why Puddy is so judgmental. I suspect that is because his politics trumps his religion. That is generally the case with religious fundamentalists, whether they be Christian, Muslim, or Jewish. Ignore the tenets of your religion because political ideology is more important.
