Last week, Central Washington University professor, conservative writer and state Republican executive board member Mathew Manweller had a guest editorial published in the The Seattle Times in which he argued that Republicans should not target Blue Dogs in the 2010 election. It hardly seemed like a controversial idea, since Blue Dogs support the Republicans so much anyhow.
And at any rate, Manweller’s piece was a Republican strategery/tactical debate, so I didn’t pay much attention. Whatever, they’ll do what they’ll do.
But it seems that some on the right have um, taken offense. Like some dude posting at Red State named Martin Knight, who thinks that Manweller might be a Democratic plant.
He’s also an idiot, notwithstanding his obvious self-regard as some sort of intellectual. Or a Democratic plant. I don’t believe there is any other explanation for what he’s proposing that the Republican Party do to itself in 2010.
Notice the “some kind of intellectual” dig. Nice! Now they’re even turning on conservative professors. Funny how anti-intellectualism gets out of hand, isn’t it, Professor Manweller? The title even calls Manweller a “sleeper agent.”
Considering some of Manwellers embarrassing right wing antics, like the time he called supporters of the minimum wage “dumber than a post,” it’s pretty darn funny that there’s a little internecine warfare going on at the WSRP.
Why do I think it’s internecine conflict? Because the attacks against Manweller are being cheered by fellow WSRP executive board member Nansen Malin of Pacific County, who at last sighting was relentlessly attacking Brian Baird because he wouldn’t have a town hall in her living room.
Malin is the “Queen of the Twitterverse,” you know. Professor Manweller better get himself a Twitter account pronto, if he doesn’t already have one, and start tweeting back immediately, because Malin has over 100,000 followers, and the ones that aren’t spambots seem pretty pissed. Sure, it’s hard to make an intellectual argument using 140 characters, and once you use up the obligatory five characters required to type in “ACORN” you’re down to 135, but you can always link to stuff. I’m looking forward to the debate.

I’m a bit concerned that the “moderates” on both sides of the aisle are the ones getting targeted for defeat in the primaries. Sure, there are a few on our side worth getting rid of, since they never stand up when it really counts. But with both sides driving further and further away from the center, how do we have civil debate and discourse? How do we reach a meeting of the minds long enough to move foward on important social issues?
I’m frustrated that the issues we have been arguing about – affordable health care, education, outsourced jobs, wage levels, environment, foreign oil dependency, federal debt, etc., are exactly the same ones we were arguing about some 35 years ago. Not only have we not made any progress in that period, we’ve lost ground. We’ve got to find a way to get beyond this logjam and actually get something done.

Been there, done that. I did my best to make sure that after Bush was gone, Republicans lost the presidency and as many seats in Congress as possible.
I find your sudden concern about the plans of the current administration laughable in light of your knee-jerk history of supporting the Bush administration. They gave tax breaks to the richest Americans right in the middle of prosecuting a war using soldiers from the middle-class and below. They shifted HUGE sums of money directly from the federal treasury to contractors friendly to the Bush administration via no-bid contracts for everything from Homeland Security to Katrina to the Iraq War (Haliburton, KKR, Blackwater, etc.). When the real estate market started to collapse, he refused to take action saying the individual homeowners needed to be “responsible”, but he was the first one in August 2008 to propose trillion-dollar bailouts by giving cash directly to banks and wall street financial firms with no strings attached, giving to his treasury secretary the unfettered choice (rather arbitrarily) of which ones would go bankrupt, which ones would be swallowed up, and which ones would emerge even bigger – taking the assets, but leaving the bad debt behind for the taxpayers to pay.
Under the Bush administration, the federal deficit had ALREADY hit a trillion dollars a year, NOT COUNTING the Iraq war (which after five years was still a non-budget item), and NOT COUNTING the bailout of the finanicial industry of August-September 2008.
Of course, you and your friends are trying to blame that on Obama. It’s kind of hard to blame it on Clinton, since he gave Bush a balanced budget for the first time in many decades. Bush put the nation on an economic downward spiral unseen since the great depression. I’m not about to let the Republicans forget that one.

Speaking at a massive rally of his so-called 9/12 Project in Washington, D.C., Fox News host Glenn Beck called today for stricter limits on the nation’s IQ.
“Barack Hussein Obama would like to see our country’s IQ rise – just like our taxes!” Mr. Beck thundered to the raucous crowd, who stopped drooling long enough to give him an enthusiastic ovation.
The conservative host proposed capping the nation’s IQ “somewhere in the low seventies” and putting tight restrictions on the number of multisyllabic words allowed in the country.
Overall, Mr. Beck seemed to revel in the turnout of his 9/12 rally, which he called “The Million Moron March.”
