“Jail time” is an imprecise use of language at best.
This is New York state, not the federal system. Sentencing is a very different process. Thanks to “law and order” lawmakers in Congress, in the federal system where Hunter Biden will be sentenced judges have very limited discretion. Any “departure” from the narrow guidelines is itself limited by statute and must be substantiated within the statutory guidelines by citations to specified qualifying conditions. Thus final sentence is the result of a fairly complex calculation depending on many factors. The statutes under which he was convicted provide for a custodial term of up to ten years. However the guideline calculation must first be applied to arrive at the final sentence determination and that involves specific input from BOP probationary services and the Special Prosecutor to issue specific findings from which the calculation is produced. We don’t yet know what those findings are nor whether any of those findings will be contested by Hunter Biden prior to his sentencing.
But it’s very understandable that President Biden as a loving father and a decent man is anguished at the thought that his only surviving son may face a very prolonged prison term.
In the state felony conviction of the Republican nominee for President Donald Trump the upper limit for a single count is four years. Despite multiple counts it is likely that the sentence would be ordered to run concurrently since all 34 individual counts arise from the same basic criminal offense and purpose. He’s nearly 80 years old and likely to be at least that old before any any custodial sentence is imposed. State prisons are not well equipped to deal with morbidly obese senior citizens who rely on a complex daily regimine of pharmaceuticals to maintain their function. Moreover, as a former president entitled to 24/7 Secret Service protection, state prisons would be exceptionally burdened by the need to accomodate that additional level of close security within any existing facitily.
However, and especially for an offender convicted of non-violent felonies, a term of monitored home confinement is often available. And while a judge is bound to be mindful of a very old prisoner’s health and safety, they will also be bound to take into account the prisoner’s disposition and deportment with respect to the judicial system, their own conviction on the criminal charges, their willingness to express remorse, and their cooperation with the criminal justice system or lack thereof.
For those reasons I’d expect that Donald Trump stands a very excellent chance of having a custodial sentence imposed to be served under supervised home confinement.

The Texas power grid managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) seems set to continue what appears to be an inexorable decline into instability following Wednesday’s testimony from ERCOT president and CEO Pablo Vegas.
Vegas told members that the grid will need a massive injection in additional generation capacity in the coming years if it is to keep pace with rapidly rising demand. On Wednesday, he said his agency has raised that estimate from 85,000 MW to 150,000 MW needed by 2030 due to new unanticipated demands coming onto the system from AI data centers and crypto-mining growth.
All noted that the state’s ratepayers will ultimately pay the price, both in the form of suffering with a rising lack of grid reliability and footing the bill for billions of dollars of new investments in additional capacity. Texas power rates are still lower than in most other parts of the country, but have risen rapidly in recent years, resulting in what is effectively a regressive form of taxation that hits the poorest citizens the hardest.
