The federal minimum wage in 1968 was $1.60 per hour raised up from $1.40 the previous year. Adjusted for CPI inflation that would be $14.41 in current U.S. dollars.
But in the intervening 55 years Congress has only adjusted the federal minimum wage 14 times (thanks Democrats!). And because of Republican obstruction it has not adjusted the federal minimum wage at all for the last fifteen years. So today the federal minimu wage stands at just $7.25 per hour, which makes it equivalent to just 80 and 1/2 cents an hour in 1968 dollars.
A fact like that can beg many questions. For a profoundly stupid troll it begs profoundly stupid questions like “why don’t you get a better job?”
What it makes me ask is this:
If $1.40 was not quite enough for people to live on in 1968, then why is the equivalent of 80 cents enough in 2024?
The Republicans in Congress who have successfully blocked legislation to raise the minimum wage every single year since 2009 can’t answer that question. They won’t even begin to try. It’s about time. Romney might’ve been president in 2012 if he had criticized the tax-free capital gains heirs get instead of calling wage slaves freeloaders because their employers paid them less than the personal exemption and standard deduction (but who, nevertheless, paid 7.65% of their paychecks in FICA taxes, which is 7.65% more than inheritors of billion-dollar estates pay).
The basis step-up is a racket. There’s no logical reason for it. The beneficiaries, namely heirs, did nothing to earn it. And it blows a massive hole in federal revenues. You can’t support this loophole and then complain about deficits with a straight face.
I assume everyone reading this knows how it is, but in case someone doesn’t, suppose you buy an investment property (or stock, or some other asset) for $10 million and it appreciates in market value to $100 million. As long as you own that asset, it’s not taxed; if you sell it, you owe capital gains tax (which is less than the tax rate on wages). But let’s say you don’t sell it, and never pay a cent of tax on that gain. When you die, your heirs get a tax basis of $100 million, not $10 million — this is the step-up — and they can then turn around and sell it and owe zero tax, because now there’s no gain. The result is that no capital gain tax is ever paid, by either the prior owner or his heirs, on the $90 million of capital gain. This is the mother of all tax loopholes.
Yeah, yeah, there’s an inheritance tax. But Republicans want to abolish it. Without the inheritance tax, the $90 million in my hypothetical would go totally untaxed, while the billionaire’s cleaning lady pays taxes on her wages that go for bus fare to get to and from work.
Like I’ve always said, working for money is the worst way of getting money there is. You’re much better off to be an idle rich playboy sunbathing on the deck of a billionaire’s yacht while hauling in all that tax-free income produced by other people’s sweat and labor. • Inherited IRA assets: The IRS requires beneficiaries of these accounts to take RMDs – required minimum distributions – each year. The amount is based upon the account balance and the age of the beneficiary. The amount is then taxed at the beneficiary’s marginal rate. Upon death of the beneficiary the remaining amount is fully taxable upon transfer to the heir(s).
• The federal tax on dividends and capital gains is 20% for those with some means, and to that is added the 3.8% NIIT (the Obamacare tax) unless one’s gain is on an asset that one was directly involved in, such as a sold business. So 23.8% goes to the federal government. That’s a higher rate than a lot of workers pay, marginally or effectively.

A neighbor was an early Tesla fan boy. He got his first about eight years ago now. He loved it and could not help bragging about it. It really fascinated him. He loved never buying gas or visiting the oil change. In fact it was so “low maintenance” that it almost frustrated him. He’s a private pilot with a single engine aircraft. And those dudes are gear heads. They kind of have to be. But the Tesla just needed to be plugged in.
He loved the performance and the looks too. And he thought it was pretty cool not producing any exhaust. He was honestly thrilled about it. But of course there were issues. Mostly little shit. Accessories that failed or glitched. Trim coming loose. The dealer was always there with a service appointment and a loaner. And because it was “a new company” that was “transforming mobility” my neighbor was cool with all of that. Back then.
He picked up his third Tesla this last fall. And last night he mentioned he was looking to get rid of it. He’s had it back to the dealer (an hour away) four times already. Shit just keeps breaking. He’s convinced that the build quality has declined. Maybe.
I think it might also be that his expectations have risen. And Tesla is not keeping up. Eight years ago his Tesla was a fairly rare sight around town and drew looks and comments. Driving it around and talking to people about it made him feel fairly special and maybe even a little smart. But now he’s just another asshole with a car that has to keep going back in to fix shit that got missed during assembly. He doesn’t feel special or smart. Not now.
