Remember that as party primary elections for down ballot races go, turnout is limited and often represents only the most engaged segment of the electorate who is willing to express a commitment to that party. Two things might explain this unusual pattern in GOP partisan primaries going back through the 2018 mids. Either the base electorate of the same habitual, committed GOP voters has changed their views and attitudes becoming increasingly paranoid, hysterical, and delusional. Or some large portion of GOP party primary voters have declined to participate and are sitting these contests out, either being replaced by other “different” voters, or increasing the percentage strength of the “different” voters in these contests.

How these two groups stack up against Dem turnout may be decisive in some states. Looking at Delaware, it appears turnout is up for both parties from 2016, although comparison is difficult owing to differences in the contests. But Dem primary turnout appears to be way, way up, while GOP turnout is only very slightly higher.

State level polling error is highly fucking correlative. If the polls are “missing” things, like huge shifts in turnout, massive defection to third party candidates, or big changes in voting pattern they way they did in 2016, chances are they will miss those things in all states where polls are being conducted.
That means the same thing today as it did four years ago today. It means that casino analysis of elections to derive probability of a Trump win can still be way off if the analysis is treating each state contest as an isolated case with isolated probability of error. Voters are not coins being tossed who must obey physical laws. Voters are human beings who behave according to feels, and tweets from Russian bot-farms, and resentments they’ve carefully nursed and nurtured, and what they heard on the radio, and for some like Puddy, what the persistent screaming in his head tells him.
I agree with you that the media seem particularly interested right now in identifying positive signs of Trump closing the gap with certain “identity groups” of voters, while ignoring all the potential alienation. But give him credit, Trump is not afraid of the alienation. It’s clear enough what he stands for. And it’s clear that he’s banking on that being enough in just enough states.
I fear that Biden is so afraid of that potential for alienation that he won’t define himself at all, beyond being “not Trump with a black, female running mate”. And I’m not sure that will be enough.
