What it really shows is that Republicans, who have absolutely no imagination and are incapable of having a new idea, are still playing the guilt-by-association card because over the course of 75 years they haven’t thought of anything better.

It is pure bullshit. Literally none of them believe in any part of what they claim, including the allegations that any of this stuff is illegal.
It is not illegal for Americans to earn money from foreign nations or foreign owned businesses.
In order to even begin to claim criminality it must first be shown that the money was received and used for a corrupt purpose. That is not the case even where President Donald J. Trump and his family members received hundreds of millions of dollars in such payments from foreign nation states, foreign businesses and individuals while they were employed by the United States government and were thus bound by law to disclose.
Which incidentally the failed to do in more than half of those cases.

Unless Republicans corruptly alter state laws to prevent it.
Then it becomes:
A carefully defined Republican minority in each and every state has the opportunity to say the same thing to Republicans.
The granting veto authority to a selected minority in the US Senate is not a model for democracy nationwide. If voters in the states should decide, and if Republicans truly believed that, they’d stop trying to make it unlawful for them to vote and then requiring twice as many of them to show up in order to do anything.
When a Republican says “Let the states decide” what they obviously mean is “Let an extremist Republican minority decide”.

@24 The rules in politics are different. Free speech plays a much larger role. Wild exaggerations and outright lying are permitted. So, too, apparently, is campaigns using copyrighted songs over the artists’ objections. And photoshopping images without the permission of the original photographer. All in the name of furthering the robust debate essential to a health democracy, by parties and individuals inimical to the very idea of democracy. The underlying theme is, “Let the voters decide.” Now Republicans want to take their criminal behavior out of the realm of the legal system and put that up for a popular vote, too. I’m not sure that’s a wise move on their part.

Indeed, the law recognizes payments to family members to corruptly influence others can constitute a bribe,’ the memo says.

Evangelical Christian leader Russell Moore revealed this week that many evangelical pastors have become alarmed that their Trump-loving congregants have become so militant that they are even rejecting the teachings of Jesus Christ.
In an interview with NPR, Moore said that multiple pastors had told him disturbing stories about their congregants being upset when they read from the famous “Sermon on the Mount” in which Christ espoused the principles of forgiveness and mercy as central to Christian doctrine.
“Multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching — ‘turn the other cheek’ — [and] to have someone come up after to say, ‘Where did you get those liberal talking points?'” Moore revealed. “And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, ‘I’m literally quoting Jesus Christ,’ the response would not be, ‘I apologize.’ The response would be, ‘Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. That’s weak.'”

In the last of these memos Cheseboro notes that no state legislature had certified the slates of fraudulent electors the conspirators had assembled. He goes on to describe the specific timeline of events that needed to happen for the fraudulent electoral slates to be counted instead of the lawfully certified slates.
One of the steps outlined in the timeline was for then Vice President Pence to “recuse” himself from presiding over the count, citing “constitutional” conflicts in the ECA. This would then open the door for the Republican Senate majority to “select” Chuck Grassley, as president pro tempore to preside. And then Grassley would then “choose” the fake electoral slates over the real ones.

@62 Last week’s Barrons, which you no doubt read from cover to cover, made clear that while consumer spending remains strong, buoying the economy, it’s now being sustained by credit card borrowing and people dipping into 401(k)s instead of pandemic savings (which are largely exhausted). In addition, the pattern of spending is shifting from discretionary items (e.g., “revenge travel”) to necessities.
At some point, this consumer spending burns itself out. Despite the major banks now declaring a recession won’t happen, recession risk is still on the table, and is affecting equity pricing. When consumer spending finally does burn out, and the recession finally arrives, it’ll affect equity pricing even more.
With this in mind, I’m stockpiling cash to buy cheap (or at least cheaper) stocks with. I also unloaded some overvalued stock to add to my cash pile. Meanwhile, the World’s Greatest Investor (TM) is betting GNRC won’t go under $95 or over $160 before December, and insisting that isn’t “gambling.”
We’re all gamblers in this game, doc. Some of us are better card counters than others. Me, I make no claims to know what the market or any individual stock will do next; I just play Moneyball, i.e. spreading my chips over dozens of stocks, and getting on base with some of them to make 5% – 10% a year.

I don’t really notice gas prices much, because I buy gas only a few times a year. My problem is I don’t drive my car enough to keep the battery charged. Those are the consequences of not living on an island or owning a gas guzzler.

“The lifestyle Justice Clarence Thomas has enjoyed over the last three decades bankrolled by gifts and hospitality from his wealthy friends is more extensive than previously known, according to a new ProPublica report, and has included numerous flights on private planes, skybox tickets to sporting events, stays at luxury resorts, and a standing invitation to play at a high-end private golf club in Florida.
“The new report is the broadest look yet at how Thomas’ social circle has funded – with limited disclosure to the public – a regular stream of extravagant excursions and events since he became a Supreme Court justice. These costly trips and travel perks often went unreported on the justice’s financial disclosure forms, ProPublica said in its investigation.”
https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/10/politics/clarence-thomas-gifts-hospitality-propublica-report/index.html
Anyone want to believe his wealthy friends gave him these handouts after he became a Supreme Court justice from the kindness of their hearts? Isn’t this the very definition of corruption? Lower court federal judges have been impeached for less.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Postscript: “None of the Thomas benefactors highlighted in the new report appear to have had direct business in front of the Supreme Court, ProPublica said. However, their donations to political causes on the right put them in sync with the justice’s far-right jurisprudence, and the friendships that were the source of the gifts and hospitality confirmed by ProPublica all seem to have begun after Thomas joined the most powerful court in the country. … Though the total value of the recently revealed gifts is unclear, ProPublica estimated that they are likely in the millions of dollars.”
This isn’t a snipe in the bushes, like the millions that Joe Biden supposedly took from his son’s influence-peddling “customers.” This is actual millions being showered on a public official with policy-making responsibilities by rich and powerful people very interested in what those policies are.

But this is exactly how you would do it if you wished to buy off an Associate Justice.
These are people with the kind of wealth that makes it fairly trivial for them to send an entirely empty 737 from Florida to DC to pick up a single individual and then fly him to Florida. Then do it again in reverse. They have lots of money to throw around.
So rather than give ten million to a particular “leadership PAC” or to a “bundler” to fund a fascist Senate campaign, a few of these individuals are instead recruited to do this kind of corrupt shit buying off a member of the Supreme Court. This is the role that the Fed Soc plays in all this. They are the go-betweens who convey the value represented by Thomas giving his allegiance to these “friends” rather than to the United States and the constitution. So of course they take pains to ensure that there is no direct, legal, causal connection between an individual paying for Thomas’ lavish and exceptional “lifestyle enhancements” and any business coming in front of him.
They were never expecting this corrupt shit to remain secret.
Just barely deniable.
And that fact more than almost anything is what justifies Congress intervening to impose an ethical conduct code on these justices. They are brazenly demonstrating that they are not capable of protecting the integrity of the institution without that intervention. Left to their own devices, even if Thomas were to fall to a long anticipated aneurysm tomorrow, the immense risk and the practical likelihood of corruption would remain.

I doubt very much — no, extremely much — this is a personal expenditure. Rather, the airplane is owned by a corporation, its operating expenses are reported as a business expense, and personal uses of the aircraft aren’t broken out for tax purposes. In fact, there are no personal uses; when the CEO flies to the Bahamas for a weekend vacay, he takes employees and/or business associates with him, and they discuss business on the flight, so you see the aircraft is essential to the conduct of the corporation’s business. When it flies empty to pick up a salaried government employee and fly him to Florida to discuss business, that’s business too. So not only are these billionaires bribing a Supreme Court justice, they’re also doing it on the taxpayers’ dime. Meanwhile, the billionaire’s cleaning lady can’t deduct her bus fare to his mansion as a work expense.

Here is the list of quite successful books that author Sonya Sotomayor has had published:
My Beloved World – Knopf
Just Ask! – Philomel
Turning Pages: My Life Story – Philomel
Just Help!: How to Build a Better World – Philomel
The Beloved World of Sonya Sotomayor – Delacorte Press
In the modern history of the court, about nineteen justices have published books ranging from court histories, to memoirs, to popular fiction even. Justice Breyer is the clear productive standout, but Sotomayor having already successfully published five books could surpass him some day. Three other current members of the court have publishing contracts and books to their credit. Every single one of these justices has earned royalties from the sales of their successful books. And Justice Sotomayor is no exception. Justice Sotomayor’s royalty income from the sales of her successful books have been reported in every single one of her financial disclosures since she began her service.
As you can see her most successful book, My Beloved World, was published in January of 2013 by Knopf Doubleday, at that time owned by German parent company Bertelsman AG. The Knopf Doubleday imprint became part of Penguin Random House when Bertelsman AG merged with rival publishing conglomerate Pearson plc six months after the publication of Justice Sotomayor’s book.
Remember that this bullshit started when the Moonie Times reported that Justice Sotomayor’s “staff” improperly pressured a university to purchase copies of her books and compensate her in various ways prior to a speaking engagement. That since turned out to be false, when the university administrators involved reported that the purchase of the books was at their suggestion, and that the Justice had actually declined their efforts to upgrade her accommodations during her speaking visit to the school. So naturally, now this bullshit has been Etch-a-Sketched again into something else, equally false.
Lets all have a vigorous debate about judicial ethics and standard codes of conduct. Let’s agree if we like that serving justices can’t accept any outside income at all. Or let’s require at least that they DISCLOSE all outside income, for fuck’s sake.
But let’s not bullshit.

The indumbification of Republican voters has to be continuous in order to sustain and prolong the grifting.
Look around the country at all the Republican campaign treasuries, state and county GOP orgs, and the various RNC affiliated national orgs. Do you really believe that they can all be so “broke” after so much fund raising for simply having spent the money “poorly”? The legal retainers Trump has handed over from these funds are stunning, far outside of any previous norms. They ought to be. There are very few attorneys willing to attach their names to this mess. And making it all so much worse is the now well known record Trump has of not paying. So they all get their money paid in advance and doubled. Meanwhile Melania is still on the payroll along with her decorators and party planners as “consultants” and Trump is fueling a 757 to fly a dozen people to a rally in Iowa. These “conservative” fools crow and strut over how much money they have handed over, believing that their own victimization somehow represents a kind triumph over “the libs”.
They have to keep propping the victims back up so they can shake them down again. And each time the supporters are required to get just that much dumber in order to take the next dumb step.
Putting Trump in jail will be doing them all a favor.

Yes. I could readily believe that every county and state GOP chairperson is embezzling party funds. I’m not saying they are; all I’m saying is it’s a plausible theory, based on what we know about the character of GOP leadership.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
132,
I wouldn’t call it “embezzling”, at least not in any legal sense.
The GOP is now all set up on a transactional basis like an organized crime family thanks to Trump. The vendors, consultants, and firms hired are all “made”. It’s a pay to play system. Ultimately a lot of the money all winds up going back to Trump and Trump affiliated groups and individuals. Everything is tracked carefully on the take. And if your packet is “light” it gets noticed. Nobody gets driven out to the Meadowlands for a dirt nap. They just get cut out of the spoils, which might as well be death.
“Good earners” get noticed and cut in for more. Crews further down the food chain are expected to engage with “approved” vendors and joint fund raising committees and keep the money flowing upstream.
I would have to imagine that actual naked embezzlement would be very unwelcome. But that doesn’t have to mean the money actually gets spent on effective campaigning either.
