    * They say we want to disband police departments (and that we hate the police): we don’t, that’s a lie. We want to weed out racism and unnecessary police brutality and for those who abuse their power to be held accountable.

We want to ensure children aren’t separated from their parents and that nobody is kept in cages. But we do want proper vetting.

    * They say we want to take away your guns: we don’t, that’s a lie. We want logical gun control to help prevent mass shootings.

    * They say we want to wage a war on Christianity and Christian values: we don’t, that’s a lie. We want people of all religions to be able to practice and worship freely.

    * They say we want people to get everything for free: we don’t, that’s a lie. We want to work hard and make sure that healthcare and education are affordable for all.

    * They say we want a war against traditional marriage: we don’t, that’s a lie. We want people of all sexual orientations to be able to love freely, no matter whom you love.

    * They say we want to destroy or rewrite history: we don’t, that’s a lie. We want to recognize the ugly parts of our past and do everything we can to say “that’s not okay, let’s not honor those aggressors, let’s not let those things happen again”.

    * They say we want to take away your constitutional rights: we don’t, that’s a lie. We choose to believe science, wear masks and try to prevent the spread of this disease.

    * They say we hate America: we don’t, that’s a lie. We just recognize our American faults and want our country to do better, and be better.

    Stop with the “us vs. them”. Stop with the straw man arguments. Stop with the fake news. Our position is one of empathy, compassion and logic. Stop believing the hype. Stop with the division. Just because we want equality for all doesn’t mean we want to take anything away from you.

    Also I want to make something really clear about the Rittenhouse defense.

    There are probably more than a thousand very highly qualified career criminal defense attorneys in the US who would have gladly taken his case pro bono. People with dozens of capital defenses and appeals in their CVs. Firms with resources and experience. In fact there are a few in the Milwaukee area* who were ready.

    I don’t know how this unfolded. But it was clear from the very start that money was the object, far more than protecting a 17-year-old kid. At this point we might as well be witnessing these men as they freely relieve themselves sodomizing this minor for the amusement of a “conservative” 2A audience of masturbating shut-ins. It disturbs me that much to see it. And yet somehow there are some among us who find this gratifying. I find myself at a loss.

    Florida olds went Trumper by 17% in 2016.
    Polling close to the election showed Trump winning the group by around 15% that year.

    Interestingly, recent polling in Florida in 2020 has Biden leading with Florida olds by anywhere from 5% to 10%. Now 2020 isn’t 2016. And so taking snapshot comparisons can be misleading in lots of ways. But remember that Trump barely won Florida against an unpopular and divisive Democratic candidate who struggled with key turnout. We think of Florida as being “older”. But it’s also a little bit “younger” too. About a third of the state’s population is between 18 and 44 (about 40% of 2016 turnout). If Biden turns out a slightly higher percentage of those voters in 2020 than Clinton did in 2016, he doesn’t have to win the over 65 demo. He just has to close the 2016 gap a few points from 17% to say about 14%.

    Trump’s popular vote margin in Florida was about 112,000. If Biden flips 2.5% of olds he takes about 50,000 of Trump’s 2016 vote away from him and puts it in his column for a net swing of 100,000 votes leaving Trump leading by 12,000.

    If Florida turnout among voters 18 to 44 increases by 2.5% and Biden does no better with this group than Clinton in 2016 (although in all the polling so far he is doing much better than Clinton) and Trump does no worse (but he is doing worse) Biden adds about 48,000 and Trump adds 32,000, giving Biden a winning margin of 4000 votes in Florida.*

    Increasing turnout by 2.5% is a big lift. And as you can see, if we assume the increase is not targeted (it is) then the results are small. But I’d argue in favor of the effort for two reasons: first is that we know that targeted turnout creates much larger effects than this example; and second is that really we don’t control how much Trump drives away his supporters – we can only sit back and measure it. It helps that Trump/GOP continue to make themselves more extreme and unpopular while Biden continues to offer a “reasonable” alternative. But that could all change in an instant. The extra small margin can make the difference in the end.

    *Unless I misread these people, it won’t be a “Brooks Brothers Riot” in 2020. And Florida’s state gov is openly corrupt and may seek to destroy ballots or find some other violent and illegal ways to cling to an unlawful win. This time the rioting may be real and deadly.
