It’s actually important to note that the user number mentioned in this piece is, according to Rochko, from November. That’s grown a great big bunch in the last couple of weeks, and the activity is spiking. In the last week a bunch of tech money investors have poured in trying to buy up instances (servers) to somehow gain a financial foothold. Although it’s anyone’s guess how that would work out financially. And while hard numbers of accounts are relatively certain, account activity, traffic, and engagement is not as easily known.
This is precisely because Mastodon is so decentralized into tens of thousands of instances (host server entities) in the cloud. As time goes on devs will continue to roll out new and better tools. But how those tools interact with each instance and its user accounts is unknown, and maybe unknowable. Because of the way ActivityPub defines interactions and admin controls I think it will prove impossible for anyone to ever really know precisely how “big” or how “active” the Fediverse really is. And that’s probably a good thing. Because it also means that it will be impossible for any individual or corporation to establish control or seek to monetize the content of others.
Go build your own fucking instance running your unique version of Mastodon, deploy it to your organization or your “tribe” of followers, and try your luck at monetizing their content with their permission. Unless you have a trust fund you’ll need to raise enough to cover your hosting. But that’s not much. You’ll need to deliver value to them to gain their willing cooperation. Because they already have sixteen thousand other instances they can choose from. So your instance should have something to offer them in return, besides arbitrary moderation decisions, Nazi trolls, and constant invasive surveillance.
I think it’s going to be different. And probably a lot better.

But here we are, witnessing perhaps the only honest opportunity to test the claim. And the result is a financial catastrophe, at least as far as its claims of financial competency are concerned. Going long on Tesla at the beginning of this month was an emotional decision. It was driven by a juvenile emotional need to “win” at a point in time when the troll had been losing a lot. This is what degenerate gamblers do.
All the financial bragging, all the casual mentions of “deals”, all the income and employment mockery, it all springs from the same juvenile emotional need. I know this is cruel to have done this to him. I know it was cruel to take advantage of his stupid boast. But I also know it was necessary. It’s necessary for Democrats, liberals, and progressives to drive the point home miserably, cruelly, and pedantically that Republicans and conservatives suck at finance. They succeed when they do by cheating, grifting, and victimizing others. And that they are not capable of making the measured, careful, and rational decisions needed to collectively increase the common good, which is the fundamental purpose of government. The strident excesses and overreach we’ve seen from federal courts in the last four years may presage a period of significant political unrest pitting the majority of voters and their elected representatives against an increasingly detached, indifferent, and isolated federal judiciary.
That’s a very bad time to have a presiding judicial official overseeing it all who either does not believe in judicial ethics, or lacks the credibility as a leader to implement any. But a court system that is seen by the voting majority and by their elected representatives as unethical, unaccountable, and out of step is also a court system begging to undergo radical reform. And that is something else that John Roberts is probably ill-suited to.
