Sad though it may be to admit it, the path forward to reversing the blue shift in swing states will involve more of the insanity. But the key thing to note about it is that it is hyper-partisan insanity that brooks no compromise with objectively discernible reality. Dominance and winning are the only reality that matter. And so you get a top contender for a statewide office still demanding to overturn the 2020 election and promising to prosecute physicians for homicide if they refused to treat patients with a useless medicine.
Needless to say I’m pretty confident this will fail in most of these statewide contests and with most key voting groups. But it isn’t failing everywhere. And it won’t fail everywhere. Americans are not uniformly distributed by political lean or other demographic markers. And there are, and there will be, locations in coming elections where enough rigidly partisan Republican voters are concentrated that the crazy wins. And what this promises for the future is more of what we’ve already been seeing. And that is the emergence of two Americas.
One America with good schools, community investment, jobs, health care, comprehensive transportation planning, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, equal protection, and a resulting high rate of overall economic productivity. And the other, lesser America with demographic stagnation, brain drain, aging and slowly shrinking population, low community investment, broken schools, lack of opportunity, little regard for civil rights, plenty of surveillance, plenty of churches, and plenty of guns.
Lesser America will be presided over by elected officials like Karen Mueller. Demagogues who lead with threats and who inspire with fear. We’ll see lots of pockets of lesser America surrounded by the rest of Real America, where the Karen Muellers will control the local school bard or county commission. But they will use those local positions of leadership to harry and distract the larger community of Real Americans. They’ll be constantly on the lookout for swimsuit violations or “My Two Mommies” in libraries. They use their limited local access to media platforms to constantly launch petitions and file lawsuits. These Karens will be tireless in demanding to speak to the manager.
I think the greatest risk for Real America that the Karens represent would be if we allow them to distract us. Some of it must be responded to. Recall petitions can’t be ignored. Lawsuits have to be responded to. But how we respond will determine if they are successful. We can respond by ignoring their complaint and focusing on the screaming, irrational Karen. Just like any decently trained barista would. We offer them a new drink or a refund while asking them to control themselves. And when they don’t (and they won’t) we ask them to leave. Never validate a Karen.
And just like a coffee shop, we can modify our policies to restrict the tantrums. We can change the laws to qualify recall petitions. We can pass anti-SLAPP legislation. We can be prepared.
We need to be prepared. The Republican Party may be in decline. But it is not going away. It is obviously changing. Into a movement of screaming Karens.

This is Michigan, a state Trump took in 2016. Where George Romney was governor. A state they need to be able to contest in all elections. These people are the party brain trust placed into action following the failure of 2020 and sent out to get to the bottom of things. This is “Behind the Kraken”.
They take stolen keys, use them to gain entry into a local clerk’s office, stage a phony break-in, pose as law enforcement sent from the state, dupe a city employee into giving them access to voting equipment, tamper with the equipment, lie to police when they respond, lie repeatedly to investigators, and video record themselves doing it.
One of these ass-clowns will be the next Lauren Boebert or Madison Cawthorn. And they are all completely delusional.
