Here in Seattle, our levies passed fairly easily. So good for us. A quick perusal looks like they passed in a lot of other cities. But less so in some exurban and rural areas. Does anyone have a comprehensive list?

Re the Canadian trucker insurrection, why don’t the cops just walk down the line of truckers issuing tickets? Moving violations for impeding traffic, not parking tickets. Do this every day, and the fines will get pretty big pretty quickly. Too many tickets and they lose their CDL. Could start towing and impounding rigs, too.

There’s sort of a Mason-Dixon line in Whidbey Island. After the 2016 election the NYT published a nationwide by-zip code map of the presidential election results, and a clear delineation between red and blue is evident at a latitude just north of Coupeville. The closer one lives to the naval base at the north end of the island, the more conservative are one’s neighbors. The closer one lives to the “village” of Langley, the more liberal are one’s neighbors.
That line shows up again, sorta, in yesterday’s levy results.
South Whidbey school levy: 65.7% yes
Coupeville levy (there were 3): 50.8-52.3% yes
Oak Harbor bonds: 44.6% yes

I can’t do that. I have to guess. For example, Starbucks was an expensive stock when I bought it, and thereafter was underwater at times. In fact, just recently it’s been beaten up so badly it’s now worth only 88X what I paid for it. However, the dividend hasn’t been cut, so the annual dividend is still 178% of what I paid for it. Eventually, the quarterly dividend will exceed my cost basis.

Let the Proud Boys pack up their condoms and amyl nitrate, hitch up their Carharts, and walk home to the U.S. Then sell their coal rollers at public auction on the internet (just burn the Trump flags). With used trucks in short supply right now the whole thing could turn a profit for the Canadians.

In response to the Amir Locke murder by a violent police gang in a no-knock raid illegally obtained using the prohibited boilerplate language, Mayor Jacob Frey has announced a “moratorium” on no-knock warrants that provides for a few narrow exceptions.

Something to think about:
The federal law that has been enjoined nationwide by a radical district court order and subsequently upheld by the 5th Circuit, blocking the president’s vaccination mandate for federal employees, is the very same federal law that empowers the president to prohibit drug use by his employees and require drug testing.
That is just one fairly tiny example of the regulatory framework over the federal workforce that would be unwoven by this court order if the Supreme Court chooses to let it stand unmodified. There are predictably a great many more. Working in a federal government agency as a rank and file employee is a work life defined by rules and regulations, almost all of which are written by the agencies themselves, empowered by the president, and supported in law by 5 U.S. Code § 7301.
Many of these things are seemingly mundane and even trivial, such as workplace dress codes or appearance codes. Others could obviously have more far reaching and potentially serious consequences to regulated vital infrastructure like transportation, energy, and science.
The lower court order is basically hot garbage in the sense that it inveighs against the statutory authority without describing any limitations or tests. Left alone it would throw the doors open to unlimited civil rights litigation against every workplace regulation. The 5th refused to consider the lower court ruling or modify it in any way, leaving it entirely intact. If the Roberts court does likewise you shouldn’t be too surprised in the near future to find yourself getting a pre-flight TSA inspection from somebody wearing nothing but a sock, high as fuck on mushrooms, and insisting on speaking exclusively in Esperanto.

The federal law that has been enjoined nationwide by a radical district court order and subsequently upheld by the 5th Circuit, blocking the president’s vaccination mandate for federal employees, is the very same federal law that empowers the president to prohibit drug use by his employees and require drug testing.
This is Fleeing-Felon-argument-after-a-thug-is-shot-in-the-front-of-his-torso-several-times bad. This argument is so bad I’m surprised it wasn’t Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit who made it.
The prohibition of drug use by employees is a requirement that certain substances cannot be introduced into the body. And something that exits the body in the form of urine may, after exit, be tested to ensure compliance.
The vaccine mandate is a requirement that one of a group of approved certain substances must be introduced into the body. And testing will be conducted by a device that is inserted into the body.
The drug policy and the vaccine mandate are exact opposites, QoS McHillbilly.

Deaths in WA state due to The Wuhan are still climbing, with the 7-day average now up to 51/day. Two weeks ago it was little more than half (27/d) that figure.
This likely factors into Inslee’s reluctance to do the free-from-The-Wuhan dance so far. Since the data on masking hasn’t changed, he can’t claim a sudden shift in the data. He’s gotta wait until the Omicron spike is clearly passing.
DeSantis got his state through it early, and caught hell for doing it. Since what Florida experienced was or is being experienced by all of the other states, free choice is looking pretty good right now. It’ll be looking even better in late 2023 and 2024.

@94 That’s Trump’s Fed chief who’s printing all that money, dipstick. The most you can blame Biden for is renominating him.
But if you’re going to criticize, you should also give credit. What this inflation buys us is no recession. Inflation or recession. Recession or inflation. Take your pick. You’re gonna have one or the other.
Which do you prefer?
Roger Rabbit spews:
@100 Almost as bad as your stock market predictions, eh? Did you really think a stock market propped up by zero interest rates and $120 billion a month of money-printing would correct? But maybe there’s still hope for you. The QE (we’re told) will soon end, and the Fed may raise interest rates to (gasp) 1.5% by year-end (which is a negative real rate of only 6.0%). And the 7.5% (annualized) inflation print is wiping out the last few days’ gains this morning. We’ll see how long that lasts.

I’ve been working on an options trading concept based upon the stock purchases by Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit.
Goes something like this:
Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit tells the world he bought ABC shares. They are trading at $XX/share when he does.
After waiting about two months the trader sells a naked put against shares of the same ABC corporation, with a strike price about 20% lower ($XX * 0.8) and an expiration date about four months out. The premium from the transaction is collected up front and can be immediately put to work as desired.
Four months later, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit will certainly be underwater about 10% on his investment, and without ever owning the shares the options trader ends up closing out his position with a gain of 10-15% (depends on market volatility at the time the put is sold) based on the ABC share price on the date Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit made his purchase.
It takes a bit of risk, because the trader is betting that Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit is stupid to an extent less than 20% of the value of the ABC shares on the date he purchases them. So far, with the exception of Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit’s nonsensical support of GE, he’s been stupid less than 20%. Although in a 7.5% inflation environment I really should say he’s stupid less than 27.5%.
Having some trouble naming this options trading method. “Capitalize on the Imbecility and Indiscretion of a Bloviating Dumbfuck” seems to be a bit too much of a mouthful, if not inaccurate. Maybe C2IBD?
Or Hare-Brained Scheme, perhaps.

Despite all the handwringing over inflation, there’s a school of thought that argues disinflation, not inflation, is the real problem.
One of the most visible advocates is Cathie Wood of ARK Invest, who argues, “We don’t have an inflation problem.” She argues inflation hawks are failing to factor in productivity, and she also expects oil prices to fall although not everyone agrees with that. Disinvestment and neglected production infrastructure are limiting producers’ ability to ramp up production, and OPEC is having trouble fulfilling its own self-imposed production ceilings.
Her views are an outlier, but she’s not alone. Other pundits voice similar claims. For example, this one contends, “Disinflation, and ultimately deflation, is a more significant threat than inflation over the next two years,” and “we already see the month-over-month inflation rates declining towards [the] levels seen since 2009.” He continues, “Given the correlation between interest rates, inflation, and economic growth, there are several reasons to expect disinflation in the months ahead,” and goes into them with charts and data.
Meanwhile, another writer (here) also ties the January inflation print to “surging natural gas and oil prices,” and points out that last week “the Atlanta Fed estimated first-quarter GDP growth at just a 0.1% annual pace,” which argues against aggressive Fed tightening, fear of which is behind today’s market drop (the implication is the market will quickly snap back when this concern fades).
These market watchers — and many more like them — think inflation is like the omicron variant, a sharp spike that quickly subsides, and they believe that strong deflationary forces embedded in the economy (caused by demographics, technology, etc.) will return the inflation rate to the baseline rate either by year-end or sometime next year. If true, that would make long-term bets on inflation bad bets, and also make betting on aggressive Fed rate hiking a bad bet. If businesses are overshooting on inventory building, production cuts will come, and if consumer spending isn’t growing, almost any tightening could squeeze the economy into contraction.
My overall impression from all sources, taking into account consensus or mainstream views, is that the economy is more fragile than recent growth figures imply, inflation is about half due to temporary factors (supply chains, and consumers spending their savings all at once), and about half due to Fed policy that probably was too loose. With consumers hunkering down (retail sales were flat in the 4th quarter), and the Fed now beginning to tighten, both of those inflation pressures should begin to abate.
And it’s entirely possible that by this fall the political problem for Biden and the Democrats will not be inflation, but recession.
I’m also seeing comments that consumers are tapped out, the consumer spending surge is over, and nearly all of 4th quarter’s growth is due to business inventory-building, backed up by data and graphs.

The district court order does not enjoin the order based in any way on any of the things you are claiming in your post.
You lie. Again. Of course. Because lying’s all you got.
The court quite bizarrely referenced the separate ruling in the OSHA mandate case – bizarre because the federal employee mandate is authorized by an entirely different statute and the OSHA enabling statute was never introduced. Citing the SCOTUS decis in the OSHA case, the district court held that COVID represents no risk to workplace safety of any kind.
Ignoring the truly bizarre nature of that declaration, it is certainly true that a colorable argument can be made (has been made many, many times) that certain substances introduced into the
Congressman’semployee’s body during a week long vacation with teen hookers in the Caribbean do not present a workplace safety risk the following week. Nor frankly would wearing a tube sock over his dick or insisting on speaking only in Esperanto. The standard described in the ruling is workplace safety. https://blackconservative360.blogspot.com/2015/04/virginia-monique-miles-running-for.html
What really struck me, though, is her excuse:
“‘The posts were made at a time when the news was still developing re: the facts around the election, the court cases, the Rally on the Ellipse and what happened at the capitol,’ she wrote in an email to the newspaper. ‘That was before all the audits occurred. What we know now about the election today is very different from what we knew on Election Day 2020 or even what we knew on the day that President Biden was inaugurated in January 2021 ….'”
What “audits” is she talking about? If election officials count ballots and the media reports the results show Biden won, we don’t know who won? After the official recounts and dismissed lawsuits, we still don’t know who won? After the electoral votes are counted and certified, and the president-elect is inaugurated, we still don’t know who won? It took her another year to figure who won?
Too stupid to be a lawyer. But dumb enough to be a Republican.
