Wednesday Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 11/17/21, 8:02 am

Am I getting old (yes!) or has everyone stopped using headphones all of a sudden (also yes?)? In just the last few weeks on the bus, on the ferry, walking around, riding a bike. Come on, everyone. Just, like, I don’t know, do the thing we’ve been doing for decades. If I wanted to hear whatever you’re listening to louder than the podcast I’m listening to now, it’s 2021, I could make that happen.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated if you’re eligible and haven’t been yet.

“This spring, the Washington Legislature passed a law changing how local governments structure their public health boards. Gov. Jay Inslee praised the bill as he signed it, saying it would ‘take politics out of public health.’”

So here’s what Spokane County Commissioners, all Republicans, did:

“The Spokane County commissioners voted to cut down the county Board of Health from 12 to eight members and eliminate the five seats representing the cities of Spokane and Spokane Valley. … The commissioners will now have three of eight seats, and they’ll personally appoint four of the remaining five members.”

The Quinnipiac poll is traditionally considered slightly favorable to Democrats. Meaning the numbers for First Vegetable Joe Biden and for House Dems hoping to keep their seats next year may be worse than the Q-poll reports

    • Americans say 46 – 38 percent they would want to see the Republican Party win control of the House of Representatives, while 16 percent did not offer an opinion.

    • Americans say 46 – 40 percent they would want to see the Republican Party win control of the U.S. Senate

    • Americans give President Biden a negative 36 – 53 percent job approval rating, while 10 percent did not offer an opinion. It’s the lowest job approval rating he’s received in a Quinnipiac University national poll.

The First Vegetable is looking weak.

On four separate issues, Biden receives his lowest grades so far on each of them. Americans were asked about his handling of…

    the response to the coronavirus: 45 percent approve, while 50 percent disapprove;
    climate change: 41 percent approve, while 48 percent disapprove;
    the economy: 34 percent approve, while 59 percent disapprove;
foreign policy: 33 percent approve, while 55 percent disapprove.

    Also in the poll:

    • Only 27% of men approve of the First Vegetable.
    • A majority of Americans think First Vegetable Joe Biden’s a dishonest POS.

Republicans believe in violence as a means of protecting and advancing their political aims.

This is just a normal part of their political ideology now, fully inculcated into their everyday discourse, including joke memes and cartoons. Without a press conference Thursday, Mr. Biden will not be forced to answer questions about his decision to continue with Title 42, a controversial public health policy used at the Mexican border to rapidly expel migrants based on concerns about COVID-19. Mr. Biden has been roundly criticized by progressives and immigration advocates for continuing to rely on it to try to keep the numbers at the border down. A U.S. District Court judge in Texas has also determined the Biden administration improperly ended the “Remain in Mexico Policy.”

    https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2021-11-16/noems-daughter-says-shes-quitting-real-estate-business

Under pressure from fellow Republican lawmakers seeking documents investigating the arrangements made by Gov. Noem, Noem’s daughter has now published the document and announced she is quitting the real estate business.

Noem’s daughter had repeatedly failed the state exam to be a real estate appraiser. (Math and stuff). So the Gov got mad and called the state agency folks into her office to yell at them for making her daughter cry. They begged forgiveness and by way of atonement, and in fear of the Gov’s terrible, wrathful anger, they signed a formal agreement to give her daughter as many do-overs as she needed and also to fire the agency manager who had transgressed. The agency manager sued and got a sweet $200,000 taxpayer cash poultice to sooth her butt hurtz. Noem’s daughter eventually got her license but not before the whole thing had blown up because of the unlawful firing.

And thus ends to greater political ambitions of the latest version of GOP Caribou Barbie. Character is destiny.

    I’ll own it.

A hundred thousand peaceful Minnesotans took to the streets on the first day of protests after watching a Minneapolis cop sport-murder a black man by kneeling on his wind pipe until he died.
Police immediately reacted with a well rehearsed series of escalation and suppression tactics including “kettling”, blockades, and chemical weapons deployed on peaceful protesters. While behind the scenes the MPD continued to release false statements about the murder.

People shouldn’t riot and loot. Big city police departments should not incite rioting and looting as a way to distract and cover up their own accessory after the fact involvement in murder.

When democratically elected civilian leaders lose command authority over the police agencies they hire and fund, it’s not unreasonable to demand that police withdraw from some areas.
It’s a prudent response to prevent more police sport-murders.

Contrast this with police responses to Republican white nationalists rampaging in cities all across the U.S. by assisting them in identifying groups to attack, communicating with them to avoid arrest, and coordinating their movements. Little surprise really, considering how many of the rampaging Republican white nationalists have turned out to be off-duty police.

Democrats want to decimate their numbers in Congress while giving me a tax break. Who am I to object?

Dems agonize over tax cuts for rich: ‘Bad policy, bad politics’

Nonetheless, the episode exposes Democrats to damaging attacks. One of the largest components of their bill to expand the social safety net is merely a tax cut for the wealthy — a potent political charge next year in key House and Senate battlegrounds where Republicans already have an advantage.

Raising the cap on SALT deductions is clearly not top of mind for vulnerable incumbent Democrats: Both Sens. Raphael Warnock of Georgia and Mark Kelly of Arizona said in interviews they are instead squarely focused on middle-class tax relief. Yet due to the party’s minuscule majorities, almost the entire Democratic Party will have to support the social spending bill to pass it.

That could force Democrats in battlegrounds like Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania to back priorities of Northeastern and California Democrats’ that aren’t necessarily popular in contested states and districts.

You don’t hear QoS McHillbilly say much about this. After all, Oregon has a fairly substantial property tax, and there’s a state income tax. Add up all of the other taxes that can be deducted (there are a bunch that can be called state or local tax) and he’s well over $10,000. He’ll benefit, directly, from passage of BBB if it includes SALT limitation repeal.

BBB is a wealth transfer. Just not in the way Democrat voters think.

Interesting about Centennial, it’s one of the few, possibly only, Amtrak Stations staffed by volunteers. The others are staffed by employees or not at all. The infrastructure bill includes a provision that sets new guidelines to prevent Amtrak from de staffing stations.

I went to the local school board meeting tonight where my kids go. It had only two themes. There is filth in the school library and their kids have to stop being forced to wear masks.

Woman after woman brought the church lynch mob of howler monkeys to a fever pitch of call and response. “You guys are cowards” some guy bellowed from the back row to applause. There was the occasional “AMEN” and “How could they?” from the crowd behind me.
Every book that described any hint of what gay boys do sexually brought a special venom. Books about being trans were considered equally bad.
They said these books was obscene, filth, child porn, illegal under state law. One women mangled a metaphor to say that books with bad words were like koolaid laced with phentenol. More than one repeated the victimhood line of “Pornography is Included in the library. God is removed from the library.”
One woman hinted since the board didn’t remove these offensive books, the board could only be secret pedophiles
Diversity and inclusion and activism were used as slurs.

The other theme was attacking mask wearing in school. They said test scores down because of masks. Their kids could breathe. Their kids were being emotionally stunted. Only 20 kids in the country actually died of COVID. When will covid end they complained?

It is a shame that school board meetings have devolved to this. I’m certainly glad I don’t have school-age kids.

COVID-19 will never “end”, it will greatly subside when the ignorant spreaders finally die off.

The only people I personally know that have contracted COVID-19 are all evangelical Christians (I am not an evangelical Christian by the way). I know 5 personally, one died, the other recovered but were all very sick. None were vaccinated. My sample pool is small, sure, but the stats speak for themselves. Still, the evangelicals push that vaccines are not worth it and masks don’t stop the spread. They also all believe that we are in “the end times.”

I just shake my head, avoid them, and were my mask to be safe. A mask alone may not stop COVID-19, but it greatly reduces transmission of droplets that can carry the virus. You simply cannot reason with them.

He has been actively involved in Republican efforts to ban or restrict critical race theory instruction or seminars.

“Critical race theory considers the idea that racism is systemic in the United States; Rufo described his strategy to oppose critical race theory as intentionally misusing the term to conflate various left-wing race-related ideas in order to create a negative association. 78,
It’s hard to do in a public meeting setting like a school board or other board because of how “comments” from the public are structured, but I believe the way to address this racist, bigoted, culture wars bullshit being flung at these meetings by organized mobs is to clearly label their claims as false.

The repeated tagline, for instance, about “pornography being in the library while God is excluded” is a straight up lie. It has to be called out.

But it has to be called out in the right way. The underlying falsehood in most of these kinds of claims is conflating depiction with indoctrination. They are objecting to depictions of lives, families, and relationships that they personally disagree with. They are demanding to have school libraries, textbooks, and curricula sanitized of any depictions of lives, families, or relationships that they disagree with. They want these lives, families, and relationships annihilated.

But depiction isn’t indoctrination. Stories that depict the lives of African Americans surviving the horrors of slavery are not indoctrination. Reading about such lives won’t make someone African American or a slave. Reading about the life of an astronaut won’t make someone an astronaut. And reading about a same sex couple raising a family won’t make someone gay or lesbian. It’s all a smokescreen.

Meanwhile there are nearly limitless depictions in school libraries, textbooks, and curricula of white, straight, Christian, cisgendered, heterosexual lives. In terms of depictions, the Christian god and the traditions and observances of Christians fucking saturate school library books, textbooks, and curricula.

It’s all a faintly nuanced lie that conceals racism and bigotry.

    The Banned Books Project
    @Carnegie Mellon University

Harper Lee, “To Kill a Mockingbird”

To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most frequently challenged books in the US due to its themes of rape and use of profanity and racial slurs. While numerous attempts have been made to ban the novel since its publication, two successful cases of banning have occurred within the past three years. In 2017, the novel was removed from 8th-grade classrooms in Biloxi, Mississippi due to a complaint from a parent citing the use of the N-word and the fear that the class’ reaction to the word may negatively affect her daughter. After protests from free speech advocates, the novel was re-added to the list of optional readings. However, parental permission was required to read it. The second case occurred in 2018 at schools in Duluth, Minnesota, where copies of both To Kill a Mockingbird and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were removed from the classroom. Unlike the previous case, the book was banned due to the accumulation of complaints over the years. Free speech groups are calling for the restoration of both novels but no changes have yet occurred.

Let’s be consistent in our considerations of book content and redeeming value thereof.

    86. The mob at the school board meeting would have happily banned Huck Finn and to Kill a Mockingbird over the bad words and sex given how they talked about the books on their lists.

I can see why these books would be banned. Too many challenging ideas using what ever means necessary.

The plot of Huckleberry Finn tells the story of two characters’ attempts to emancipate themselves. Huck desires to break free from the constraints of society, both physical and mental, while Jim is fleeing a life of literal enslavement.

To Kill a Mockingbird tells the story of the young narrator’s passage from innocence to experience when her father confronts the racist justice system of the rural, Depression-era South. In witnessing the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man unfairly accused of rape, Scout, the narrator, gains insight into her town, her family, and herself. Several incidents in the novel force Scout to confront her beliefs, most significantly when Tom is convicted despite his clear innocence. The entrenched racism of her town, the unfair conviction and murder of Tom Robinson, and the malice of Bob Ewell all force Scout to acknowledge social inequality and the darker aspects of humanity.

Let’s be consistent in our considerations of book content and redeeming value thereof.

And while I entirely agree with consistency, that does not translate into a slavish devotion to “tradition” nor “past precedent”.

A very big part of this story about a coordinated campaign to leverage working class white fears about identity is the underlying basis for that fear, however misplaced or unfounded it may be.
These people are scared. Their fear is real. But it’s what they are afraid of that is ultimately the problem and describes what is at stake.

Many of these people lead what feel to them like precarious lives. They’ve experienced years and in some cases decades of economic and employment uncertainty. While this has been happening, they’ve watched the culture around them open up in ways that have been challenging to them. A broader commercial culture that previously had been almost entirely exclusively reserved for depictions, portrayals, and stories about lives and identities that either reflected their own lives or reflected their own aspirations was suddenly beginning to make room for other kinds of lives and identities. The space within the culture that is given over to these other different stories and identities feels like loss to these people. And it is an especially sharp feeling of loss for some of them. It’s this sense of loss for example that explains the irrational fury some of these people experience when they encounter someone speaking Spanish or a multi-lingual telephone system.

But library books that depict different types of family life are no more threatening to them in real life than a private conversation on the bus between two speakers of Spanish is to a speaker of English. The challenge is helping these people overcome these irrational fears that are ultimately the result of decades of Republican exploitation and economic abandonment. And doing this while continuing to fight for space in the culture, and in public education for stories that include the true diversity of American life. If you are going to make room for stories about Sojourner Truth you might have to push aside some stories about “Stonewall” Jackson.

@93 “A very big part of this story about a coordinated campaign to leverage working class white fears about identity is the underlying basis for that fear, however misplaced or unfounded it may be.”

This is the principle on how the bible works so well for those conservative troglodytes. It stokes their fears and tells them it will be “all right” if you just believe in the “word of God.”

The bible is full of hate and violence by the way, and when you point that out to the bible bangers, they just get pissed off and yell at you.

Richard Dawkins, in his book “The God Delusion”, said: ”
“The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”

By all accounts, the Bible should be banned from public school libraries.

The Kyle Rittenhouse verdict just declared open season on left wing protestors.

The Rittenhouse verdict gives them permission to kill. I’ve lost the definition of right and wrong.

To be Black and illegally armed in America means you will be executed by the police or incarcerated if you’re lucky. To be White and illegally armed in America means you can murder two people on camera and go home as a hero.

Now every white asshole with an AR-15 is going to think mowing down protesters is A-OK.

When the judge told the attorneys not to call those Rittenhouse killed as “victims” I stopped paying attention to the trial. The verdict was already made

America is the only country where a white teenager carrying an assault rifle that wasn’t permitted to him, could kill 2 people and barely be charged with anything. While as a Black child would be shot dead for playing with a toy gun

If you are shocked by the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict today literally at all then you haven’t been paying attention to what the protests have been about the whole time.

The Senate contests in Arizona, Georgia and Nevada once leaned toward Democrats. That changed on Friday, when the nonpartisan election handicapper reclassified them as toss-up races, meaning that they could go in either direction.

Careful there. I wish I could tell you that he set a low bar.
But before doing that we have to recall that in our system proving guilt in court in front of jury is seldom part of most criminal prosecutor’s job. Stack ’em up and deal ’em down is how we do it in the U.S.

I can’t comment on any specifics because I did not watch any of the trial. But I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this state’s prosecutor displayed some incompetence about trial strategy or witness prep. Probably doesn’t have much experience.

And as to the charging decisions, this isn’t surprising or exceptional either. In our normal everyday criminal justice system prosecutors routinely bring very serious felony charges with the scantest of evidence. If they knew much about juries or even cared they might think twice. But that isn’t how they operate. They overcharge defendants every single fucking working day of their lives in order to get easy plea agreements.

The whole massive house of cards starts with too many cops, running around enforcing too many criminal laws, almost always selectively upon the poor or the weak and it all flows downhill from there. Everybody is in it for the numbers because that’s how careers are built. What makes lonely, violent, emotionally disturbed MAGAteen exceptional aren’t the facts or circumstances. It was the giant pile of GoFundMe money that paid for competent advocacy. Regular poor people don’t get that.

Right, see, if I were still a working journalist my editor would not allow me to call Rittenhouse a “murderer” or a “domestic terrorist” even though he is arguably both. This call for filing defamation suits is yet another tool in the far-right’s campaign of fear & intimidation. https://twitter.com/GoldyHA/status/1461773621903257604 … https://twitter.com/GoldyHA/status/1461773621903257604

The reason your editor would prevent that, David, is that (s)he has a professional reputation worth protecting. It’s what separates your former editor from you.

Sure, free from legal jeopardy, but remember, a 17 year-old kid did cause the death of two people, albeit in self-defense: don’t you think that memory will stick with him for the rest of his life?

I guess you think those tears on the stand were crocodile tears at best, don’t you?

I think it should stick with him. When he becomes a first-responder he’ll already know that there are some situations that are too dangerous to get involved in. Let ’em bleed, let it burn.

If not Rittenhouse, someone else eventually would have killed Rosenbaum. Pedophiles don’t do well in prison.

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
