Wednesday Open Thread

– It’s hot again and I am working from my un-air conditioned apartment.

– Division Street in Spokane could be a lot better.

Coming home from Drinking Liberally, the bus (49 South) was as crowded as I’ve ever seen it at 10:00. Are people taking the bus while I-5 lanes are closed? If so, welcome and I hope you stay after it opens up.

– Anyway, your legislators and member of Congress go uncontacted. Tragic, but you can fix it.

Pete Buttigieg’s DOT spent $80 billion on DEI grants, delayed air traffic control upgrades: records, industry insiders

Homosexual spends a shit-ton of money to provide other undeserving homosexuals with taxpayer-funded jobs.

In an urgent letter to Buttigieg’s DOT in April 2024, air industry trade association officials warned that at the current rate of hiring, it could take as long as 90 years for the FAA to reach its targeted staffing levels in some of the critical New York air traffic control centers.

At the same time, the focus of the department under Buttigieg also shifted, with roughly 400 DEI-related grants approved, according to a review of federal spending between 2021 and 2024.

They argued that while hiring improved in recent years, there was still a high dropout rate and surging retirements from veteran air traffic controllers.

Just 60 grants for diversity, equity or inclusion initiatives were approved during the previous administration, totaling no more than a few billion dollars.

More than 130 of the eliminated workers held jobs that directly or indirectly support the air traffic controllers, facilities and technologies that the FAA uses to keep planes and their passengers safe, according to the union that represents them, the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists. That alone creates reason for concern about the impact of the cuts, people familiar with the terminations said, even if the initial firings spared the air traffic controllers themselves.

I think the real problems with the FFA funding and it’s deficiencies have to do with Nixon getting impeached.

Too much time was spent having defend yourself from an investigation and all hell broke loose after that. Then Ronnie came in and fired all the traffic controllers, don’t forget that.

See where the fault lies? We can play games, it’s a lot of fun.

Florida passed a law against drag performances. A federal judge ruled the law unconstitutional and enjoined its enforcement. A federal appeals court upheld the ruling and injunction. Florida’s radical-right AG called the rulings “radical and wrong” and pledged and pledged to “fight aggressively and swiftly to get these bad decisions overturned.”

Meanwhile, the vice mayor of Vero Beach, Florida, owns a local wine bar that hosted a drag performance last month, when the law against drag performances was enjoined.

Consequently, the radical-right AG issued a subpoena demanding “surveillance video, employee work schedules and contracts or invoices that identify which performers were present at the event … information related to attendance at the event and copies” of the wine bar’s “policies regarding age verification, admission policies, security screening and ID checks” for the ostensible purpose of enforcing the unenforceable law.

    https://thehill.com/homenews/lgbtq/5416010-florida-ag-lgbtq-pride-event-drag-show/

Today’s legal quiz is: Can the vice mayor ignore the subpoena as void ab initio, or does she have to file a motion to quash with a court?

For bonus points, is the radical-right AG’s dick long enough to reach around behind so he can fuck himself, or does he need a boyfriend to get assfucked?

Trump’s latest brainwave — he has at least one a week — is to eliminate the capital gains tax on personal residences.

The exemption isn’t indexed to inflation, needs updating, and its almost certain true that some seniors are keeping their homes to avoid paying the tax.

But because the exemption shields affordable homes from the tax, eliminating this tax would increase deficits and only benefit owners of expensive homes while not putting a single affordable home on the market.

Like all of Trump’s tax “reforms,” it’s just another tax cut for the rich, financed by borrowing and adding to debt.

Staff were dismissive or abusive even when detainees were undergoing a visibly obvious medical crisis. For example, staff ignored a detained immigrant who began coughing blood in a crowded holding cell for hours. In that case, unrest ensued, and a Disturbance Control Team stormed the cell, forcing the men in it to lie face down on the wet, dirty floor while officers zip-tied their hands behind their backs. A detainee said he heard an officer order the cell’s CCTV camera feed to be turned off.

Another detainee said a team member slapped him while shouting, “Shut the f*ck up.”
During another incident, officers made men eat while shackled with their hands behind their backs after forcing the group to wait hours for lunch: “We had to bend over and eat off the chairs with our mouths, like dogs,” one man said.

Women and men alike reported that seeking help-especially mental health support-could lead to punishment and retaliation. At BTC, authorities put detainees who complained of emotional distress in solitary confinement for weeks, creating a chilling effect. One woman said: “If you ask for help, they isolate you. If you cry, they might take you away.

I literally knew that was going to be your response about Chinese imports to the US. It doesn’t matter if China can sell cars in the US. China is selling cars in China. China is selling cars in India. China is selling cars in Europe. China is selling cars in South America.

Donnie made a big deal about wanting to slap tariffs on European cars because we aren’t selling enough cars in Europe. It has nothing to do with the ability of US car makers to sell cars in Europe and everything to do with the ability of US car makers to sell cars in Europe. Outside of the US no one wants a land yacht. There aren’t pavement princesses taking a single child to soccer practice in a 13,000 pound SUV anywhere except this country.

But those are the cars we insist on producing. The only American based car company with increasing sales in overseas markets currently is, you guessed it, Tesla. In most of the world automotive gas is not subsidized the way it is here. Roads are not designed for giant vehicles

What China is already doing and will continue to do is eat away at every single market in the world where the US is trying to sell cars while we cling to our F250s and Silverados. Just go back and look at how gleeful you are with the idea that the F150 lightning is losing money while the American automotive sector desperately tries to catch up to the electric vehicles available in other markets

Columbia University has reached a deal with the Trump administration to pay more than $220 million to the federal government to restore federal research money that was canceled in the name of combating antisemitism on campus …

“This agreement marks an important step forward after a period of sustained federal scrutiny and institutional uncertainty, acting University President Claire Shipman said.

The administration pulled the funding, because of what it described as the university’s failure to squelch antisemitism on campus during the Israel-Hamas war that began in October 2023.

Columbia then agreed to a series of demands laid out by the Republican administration, including overhauling the university’s student disciplinary process and adopting a new definition of antisemitism. Wednesday’s agreement codifies those reforms, Shipman said.

    https://www.aol.com/columbia-university-reaches-deal-trump-235204328.html

This isn’t a step forward, it’s a sellout — especially of students, alumni, and prospective students opposed to the genocide in Gaza — and nobody should attend a university that pay ransom to bullies or agrees to censor peaceful protest against Israel’s war crimes.

I fully agree with imposing discipline for violence, harassment, and vandalism (e.g., graffiti on buildings). That’s not the issue here. The issue is that the Trump administration defines any criticism of Israel as “antisemitic” which is bullcrap.

A pox on any college administrators who cater to Trump’s assaults on academic freedom and the First Amendment in order to get money. That’s not a university worth attending.

That’s true. But it’s true of gas vehicles, too. When only the rich get tax breaks, only the rich can afford houses and cars.

American automakers decided there wasn’t enough profit in making cars average people can afford. They’re finding out that when you only make vehicles with six-figure MSRPs, you don’t have very many customers for those vehicles.

Today, if you just want an affordable family car, it will be a foreign brand.

There are many reasons for that but the primary one the belief that cars needed to get bigger trucks needed to get bigger and they all had to run on gas

The issue is that the Trump administration defines any criticism of Israel as “antisemitic” which is bullcrap.

The “issue” is that Jewish students at Columbia were harassed, threatened, mocked during class, trapped in a library by hostile “protesters”, and the university let it happen.

    U.S. News
Jewish students at Columbia faced hostile environment during pro-Palestinian protests, report finds

Jews and Israelis at Columbia University were ostracized from student groups, humiliated in classrooms and subjected to verbal abuse as pro-Palestinian demonstrations shook the campus last year, and their complaints were often downplayed or ignored by school officials and faculty, the university’s task force on antisemitism said in a report released Friday.

Citing “serious and pervasive” problems uncovered through nearly 500 student testimonials, the faculty task force recommended revamped anti-bias training for students and staff and a revised system for reporting complaints about antisemitism.

It said student groups should stop issuing political statements unrelated to their missions, saying Jewish students felt pushed out of many clubs and organizations.

Columbia let things get out of hand and let pro-Palestinian students behave like thugs at the expense of the safety and health of their Jewish classmates. Way too much of it was caught on camera.

You’re a fucking asshole, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit. Even the BBC says the settlement is because Columbia did not protect its Jewish students from harm at the hands of pro-Palestinian protesters.

    3. The base model is $62k which puts it higher than a loaded minivan and it also seats 8

The base model is rear-wheel drive. Think about Queen Anne hill in winters with RWD. Or the hill up Magnolia. Or I-90 to a ski slope.

Now, let’s look at battery range, shall we? Best-case scenario is 234 miles. That’s well under what people expect nowadays – one of you assholes was bragging that China now has a vehicle with a 500 mile range. So long range either matters (China) or it doesn’t (VW bus), depending on the whim of you fuckers from one point to the next. Got it.

Now, let’s look at real-life battery range:

The ID.Buzz comes with an 86.0-kWh battery pack as standard, and Volkswagen says rear-wheel-drive models will offer up to 234 miles of range per charge. All-wheel drive models are said to offer up to 231 miles per charge. In our real-world 75-mph highway range testing, we fell short of those estimates, with the AWD ID.Buzz achieving a result of 190 miles and the RWD ID.Buzz achieving 180 miles.

In the cold, with the heater running to warm up all of that cabin air volume (Car & Driver calls it cavernous), drop that to 130-140 miles of range.

So what you have is an overpriced vehicle that’s useful maybe 8 months out of the year, as long as there’s DC charging capability where you’re going. GLWT.

Oh. The EV SUV I’m currently leasing offers 281 miles of range (AWD). With one-pedal driving and no freeways on Whidbey I’m getting in the 300-305 mile range, extrapolated (seems accurate during the rare instances in which I run the charge down into the 10% range). Compared with what consumers expect the VW bus EV is an expensive and useless toy.

So now HA libbies have embarrassed themselves with the Nissan LEAF (QoS McHillbilly a couple of weeks ago) and the VW bus EV. What’s next, one of you singing the praises of the GM Hummer EV?

    For fuck’s sake.

Most of the pick ups sold are RWD with a heavy front engine. The Buzz’s engine is over the rear axle. The weight distribution makes it better to get up Capitol Hill than a base F-150.

The range is an issue for some but most adopters don’t drive anywhere near that in a day. Kind of like how 93% of land yacht trucks never in their lifetime carry a load that wouldn’t fit in a….Honda Fit.

Like Tesla sales, Trump’s job approval is still sinking.

While we’re demonizing immigrants, let’s demonize Melanie too, not name buildings after her.

BREAKING: President Trump signed an executive order directing states to criminalize and institutionalize people experiencing homelessness, addiction, and mental health disabilities.

Coupled with…. RFK wanted to put everyone with mental illnesses and addictions on work farms. That’s one way Republicans could address the labor shortage due to deportations.

Wonder if they will set those up before the republicans vote to release the Epstein files?

Problem for law school class discussion:

Does the estate of a cat have standing to sue over noise complaints?
Does sovereign immunity bar the cat’s lawsuit against the Navy?
Are some lawyers not busy enough with real work?

Looks like a new round of MergerMania among Class 1 Railroads is happening. Up is in talks with Norfolk Southern. Rumors that BNSF is looking for a partner, possibly CSX, but Warren Buffet’s purchase of BNSF mandated him from not owning any other railroad.

It looks like the U.S. may have committed its first act of war against Canada if this Canadian citizen was indeed in Canadian waters when he was attacked and taken prisoner by U.S. armed forces.
