– Burien is a delightful city, why not just not be jerks to homeless people? Anyway, it’s good that they’re getting their day in court.

– As a member, I support REI workers on the board. Also, the bill mentioned in the article.

– Mass deportation is bad.

– A lot of shit going on right now. Good time to call your representative or legislator.

    Thomas D. Homan
    @RealTomHoman

In the last 24 hours the US Border Patrol has encountered a total of 229 aliens across the entire southwest border. That is down from a high of over 11,000 a day under Biden. I started as a Border Patrol Agent in 1984 and I don’t remember the numbers ever being that low. President Trump promised a secure border and he is delivering. ~ Thomas D. Homan, US Border Czar

People “older than 100 years” are probably illegals.

Individuals over age 100 are more susceptible to having their Social Security numbers fraudulently used by undocumented immigrants for work rather than having their benefits stolen, Nowrasteh said.

“A good number of these Social Security numbers are being used by illegal immigrants to work and pay taxes,” Nowrasteh said.

Importantly, that likely means more money coming into Social Security through payroll taxes than leaving the program through benefit payments, according to Nowrasteh.

In tax years 2016 to 2020, employers and individuals received about $8.5 billion in wages, tips and self-employment income from 139,211 Social Security numbers attributed to individuals ages 100 and up, according to the 2023 SSA OIG report that looked at number holders ages 100 and up.

But Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama), a close Trump ally who supports the cuts, said last week that begging for funds may be the new normal, suggesting that lawmakers could lobby Musk to save spending they’ve allocated for their states as he slashes and cancels contracts at agencies.

“If we have to lobby for, ‘Hey wait a minute, what about the bridge in Birmingham?’ or, ‘There’s a bridge in Mobile’ or whatever, I think that could be very possible,” Tuberville told reporters.

@12 For the record, Wikipedia describes Alex Nowrasteh, who works at the libertarian Cato Institute, as “a self-described ‘radical’ advocate for open borders to and from the United States.”

It’s plausible that illegals use the SSNs of dead people to pay taxes for benefits they’ll never receive. In many cases, these SSNs are public knowledge. For example, there may be a Richard Nixon (SS# 567-68-0515) picking lettuce in the Imperial Valley. This is a good thing, not a bad thing. It helps keep Social Security afloat.

What about fraud? Well, the article you linked to points out that,

Just because the Social Security Administration has millions of people in its database who are very elderly and not marked as deceased does not necessarily mean benefits are fraudulently being paid, said Alex Nowrasteh, vice president for economic and social policy studies at the Cato Institute, a public policy research organization.

“The amount of fraud is likely miniscule,” Nowrasteh said.

Apparently Elon doesn’t understand that SSA doesn’t employ people, at significant cost to taxpayers, to scrub dead recipients from its rolls. Or that this doesn’t mean those dead people are still receiving benefits. Or that illegals using dead people’s SSNs to pay taxes for benefits they’ll never receive isn’t a five-alarm crisis requiring emergency staffing.

Apparently you don’t, either. But perhaps you can take comfort from the fact the world’s richest man isn’t any smarter than you are.

@40 “Zelensky is preventing elections from being held.”

    Not exactly:

Presidential elections were scheduled to be held in Ukraine in March or April 2024. However, as martial law has been in effect since 24 February 2022 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, no elections were held because Ukrainian law does not allow presidential elections to be held when martial law is in effect. Martial law has been extended in 90-day intervals since the full-scale invasion with parliament’s approval, and has most recently (as of February 2025) been extended for the 14th time until 9 May 2025.

Incumbent President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not confirmed if he will seek reelection. When asked in a January 2025 interview, he said that seeking a second term was not his current goal or focus, but his decision would depend on the outcome of the war.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_Ukrainian_presidential_election

So far, Trump hasn’t declared martial law or suspended the next U.S. presidential election; he’s merely suggested he might ignore the constitutional bar against a third term.

As Democrats raise concerns about DOGE’s oversight, Biden administration permitted “291 contractors, 74 other Federal agency employees, and 53 unpaid hires (researchers and student volunteers), to access the IRS’s Compliance Data Warehouse (CDW), according to an inspector general report issued September 9, 2024. The report found the individuals were authorized IRS access in 2023.

Many of those individuals were granted access to unmasked data that “includes Personally Identifiable Information,” the report stated, which “requires an approved access entitlement, and access to Personally Identifiable Information also requires executive level approval,” according to the report:

Compliance Data Warehouse (CDW). According to the IRS, the primary goal of the CDW is to provide a single, integrated environment of data and computing services to support the research and analysis needs of IRS employees and research analysts. The CDW is not a traditional computer software application. At its core, the CDW is a massive data warehouse containing multiple years of Federal Tax Information and Personally Identifiable Information consolidated from multiple sources, internal and external to the IRS. The CDW offers a broad range of databases that research analysts may access through a variety of data analytic tools. Examples of the data available include:

    • Individual Master File data.

    • Business Master File data.

    • Tax return data.

    • Taxpayer contact information.

    • Conversations between a taxpayer and an IRS agent.

    • Actions that took place on behalf of the IRS.

@62 This smells like another of Elon’s “freak experiments.”

    https://thehill.com/policy/technology/5150832-steve-bannon-elon-musk-doge/

That’s how Steve Bannon describes Elon’s multifarious diktats. Bannon had some other colorful words about Elon, too, including “parasitic illegal immigrant” and “playing God without any respect for the country’s history, tradition or values.”

I’m not a Bannon fan and disagree with him on most things, but there are times when the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and this may be one of those times. Anything Bannon does to run Musk through the woodchipper has my approval.

The idea that a president can delegate his authority to an unelected bureaucrat (which is what Elon, at best, is) or a civilian with no official capacity (which is what Elon likely is) is anathema to the Constitution, our form of government, and how democracy (accountability to voters in particular) is supposed to work. I’m not going out on a limb by venturing it’s probably unconstitutional and illegal.

The idea that a man, merely because he’s obscenely rich, who’s never been elected to any public office and is constitutionally ineligible for the office whose powers (and then some) are being delegated to him, can shutter agencies, fire federal employees en masse, and usurp Congress’s constitutional authority of spending decisions, is contrary to our entire system of government. It’s not wrong to describe it as a “coup d’etat” and “oligarch takeover.”

Bannon’s description of Musk as a “parasite” is precisely accurate. Musk’s private business entities have at least $17 billion of contracts with the federal government, and there’s no sign any of that spending has been, or will be, cut by a penny. What’s more, Musk is going out of his way to eliminate regulatory oversight of his businesses by firing the regulators.

Now let’s talk about “freak experiments.” If the American people want to experiment with their government, it’s up to them to elect representatives to carry out the experiment. Although Trump won the election, he said nothing to voters about handing the government to Musk or doing any of the things Musk is now doing (including invading personal information in Social Security and IRS databases).

Neither Trump nor Musk told anyone they were going to dismantle the government to the extent of Musk’s “freak experiment.” While some hints of that lurked in the Project 2025 document made public before the election, Trump specifically disavowed that document and the plans it contained.

One thing Bannon did not call Musk is “America’s Rasputin,” so I will. Musk is to Trump as Rasputin was to the czarina (who actually ran things in Russia). Well, you know how Rasputin ended up: Clubbed, shot, tied up and thrown into a river.

I prefer the courts solve the “Musk problem.” All our judges have to do is enforce the separation of powers and issue orders shutting down Musk’s unconstitutional and/or illegal activities. If he disobeys their orders, he can be held in contempt and thrown in the D.C. jail (not the Potomac River). He can also be sued in his personal capacity if courts rule (as they should) that he’s not acting in an official role cloaked with governmental immunity, and I’m pretty sure the articulable damages so far already exceed his personal net worth (if they don’t, they soon will). It’s not necessary to give him the Rasputin treatment; I will be satisfied if our courts do their job and put him in his proper place.

    So THAT's their plan spews:

@62 This policy could have been, and likely was, drafted in the Kremlin. And one can suspect the only reason for keeping the other 60% of defense spending intact is for militarizing our borders with Mexico and Canada, invading Panama and Greenland, and shooting peaceful American protesters in our own streets. I wonder how many of our troops will be up for any of this? Let’s look at recruiting numbers six months and a year from now.

Speaking of military recruiting, the Trump-Musk team is already stealing military housing funds; and if they do to veteran’s benefits what they very obviously intend to do to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and food stamps, military service will be nothing but a minimum-wage job with no retirement or workplace injury benefits; and I’ve gotta believe that will affect recruiting.

    Democrats are so weak.

Every single Senate Democrat voted No. Not a single Senate Democrat, no matter their reelection vulnerability, voted for apeasement to Fat Hitler. Both independents and two Republicans joined them in opposing fascism.

Fifty one of fifty three Senate Republicans bent the knee.

Speaking of senators, Moscow Mitch won’t run for reelection, and “Farmer Jim” Comer won’t run for his seat.

It’s too early to say whether McConnell’s seat will be in play. This is Kentucky, after all. But at the rate President Musk is fucking over everyone who isn’t a billionaire it’s conceivable that every seat on the 2026 ballot might be in play.

No. Without even reading the article, the answer is no. The 14th Amendment is unambiguous. (So is Supreme Court precedent; but that doesn’t count anymore.)

Trump is preparing to dissolve the leadership of the U.S. Postal Service and absorb the independent mail agency into his administration, potentially throwing the mail provider and trillions of dollars of ecommerce transactions into turmoil.

Many rural Americans and seniors especially rely on USPS delivering to neighborhoods that private companies won’t, and do so at a fair price. Rural folks depend on the USPS to get their prescriptions. This will cut off a critical lifeline for rural people.

    Republicans did this.

    https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5156280-dhs-revokes-haitian-temporary-protected-status/

Dumping half a million people into a lawless country of 11.5 million people is just what the Western Hemisphere needs. If they actually send the 520,000 Haitians in the U.S. with Temporary Protected Status to Haiti, that just might meet the definition of “genocide.” Not a whole lot different from Turkey marching Armenians into the desert in 1915.

The DOGE $5,000 bonus checks probably aren’t going to happen. But here’s an interesting factoid: Only 73 million of the roughly 130 million households would get them. That’s because only households that pay taxes would be eligible. Don’t make enough from working 60 hours a week at your two $7.25-an-hour jobs to pay taxes? Fuck you, get off the couch and get another job, lazybones! That’s how it’s gonna work.
