    When is a pardon not a pardon?

    The Arkansas Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that Democrat Jimmie Wilson is ineligible to serve in the state Legislature due to decades-old misdemeanor convictions in federal court, wiping out Wilson’s victory at the polls earlier this month in House District 12.

    Wilson, a former state lawmaker who was convicted of selling mortgaged crops and illegal use of farm loans, had argued that a pardon he received from President Bill Clinton in 2001 removed any barriers to his potential return to the Legislature. Running against Republican David Tollett, Wilson received more than 52% of the vote in the Nov. 3 election.

    A unanimous decision by the high court, however, held that the pardon did not erase Wilson’s disqualification.

    When you try to use it in order to enrich yourself at the expense of the same people you were convicted for fucking over in the first place.

    I’m sure this guy’s no billionaire. But he’s undoubtedly a friend of the Clintons from when Bill used to be a serial rapist and Hillary enabled his crimes. The pardon was probably done in the same stack as the Marc Rich pardon, as it was issued in 2001, just before Clinton left office.

    I don’t read the NYT, so this is the first I have heard of a January vaccine development.

    On November 22, the New York Times published a fascinating account of the race to produce a coronavirus vaccine. The Times report included a number of interesting facts, but one really grabbed my attention: It turns out that the Moderna vaccine, which was just shown to be 95 percent effective, was actually developed by the company in just two days in January 2020.

    That’s right, they developed the vaccine in two days in January, but then needed to spend the following ten months performing tests in order to meet the FDA’s standards for vaccine safety and efficacy.

    In retrospect, hopefully, we can learn that next time, releasing a vaccine sooner may be possible. The holdup was for the evaluation of efficacy, not risk.

    @13 I read today that some company is close to producing a home self test that results of infection will be in 15 minutes. And the results are relatively accurate. I’m probably stating that a bit wrong but you can go look it up and/or correct me.

    I went last month and got test with a rapid test – results know in 15 minutes, at a clinic. But the results of the test are said to not be as accurate as the swab test, which I also did. Oh, I was negative on both.

    But why hasn’t the leadership of the soon to be past administration push that. Sure testing isn’t a vaccine. But why no fucking leadership? Why did it take so long for this company? Government regulations?

    And if the Vaccine that was produced in January 2020 was released on Feb. 1st, 2020, would you be one of the first volunteers to take it?

    And what difference does it make – when a larger percentage of people say they won’t take the vaccine when it is available, due to distrust? Do you think that percentage of people would be greater, if it came out in February 2020?

    Do you have a reasoned point to make?

    Sure – learn a lesson here. But don’t cut off your nose in spite of your face.

    Recall that the first Wuhan test was produced by the government’s lab, and they fucked it up by contaminating the reagents, which caused false-positives.

    On Feb. 6, a scientist in a small infectious disease lab on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention campus in Atlanta was putting a coronavirus test kit through its final paces. The lab designed and built the diagnostic test in record time, and the little vials that contained necessary reagents to identify the virus were boxed up and ready to go.     Under normal circumstances, that kind of result would stop a test in its tracks, half a dozen public and private lab officials told NPR. But an internal CDC review obtained by NPR confirms that lab officials decided to release the kit anyway. The revelation comes from a CDC internal review, known as a “root-cause analysis,” which the agency conducted to understand why an early coronavirus test didn’t work properly and wound up costing scientists precious weeks in the early days of a pandemic.

    In addition to learning of the early warning, reviewers determined the Respiratory Viruses Diagnostic Laboratory, run by a highly regarded scientist named Stephen Lindstrom, was beset with problems, including “process failures, a lack of appropriate recognized laboratory quality standards, and organizational problems related to the support and management of a laboratory supporting an outbreak response,” the review said.
