I was just reminiscing about my personal encounter with Barry Goldwater, back in my college student days, I think it occurred in 1966. He was on campus to give a speech, and afterward I was part of a group of 5 or 6 students he chatted with for about 15 or 20 minutes.

That shouldn’t take more than a few days. And nights. Long nights.
@18 The legal challenge in Wisconsin concerns access to ballot counting. In other words, it’s an observer issue, not a challenge to ballots. They’re asking for some ballots to be counted again with what they say are **proper** observer procedures being followed. I haven’t read the details, but knowing how the Trump camp operates, I suspect this is an argument over non-credentialed observers being admitted to watch the counting.
Recount rules vary by state. Wisconsin has no automatic recount, but candidates can request a recount at their expense if the margin is less than 1%, or the state will pay for a recount (if requested) when the margin is less than .25%. The state also pays if the recount changes the result.
With 99% reporting, the Wisconsin totals are:
Biden: 1,630,396
Trump: 1,609,879
That’s a difference of 20,517 votes, which is 0.63% of the total. So Trump can request a recount, but he’ll have to pay for it.
What are the odds of a recount overturning that result? Slim to none.
In a typical recount, the total number of ballots will slightly grow, because the recount will pick up votes that were missed in the initial count (because of machine errors, misplaced ballots, etc.). Both candidates can expect to end up with more votes than they started with.
That, of course, is useless to the candidate requesting the recount; he needs a net gain. While the odds of the margin staying exactly the same are nil, and there almost certainly will be a shift for one candidate or the other, that shift is likely to be very small and there’s no assurance it will be in favor of the candidate who requested the recount.
People experienced with elections probably will tell you that given a pool of 3.2 million ballots, the shift is likely to be a few hundred votes, possibly a couple thousand votes. But they would roll their eyes at a candidate hoping to pick up more than 20,000 votes from a recount.
The Biden camp doesn’t have to lose sleep over a Trump request for a Wisconsin recount. The situation is different in Michigan. There, they’re hoping to stop the counting. But I would be shocked if even diehard Republican judges went along with that. There’s no basis for that demand in Michigan election laws. I also note it appears Biden is currently leading in Michigan, so I’m not sure what he expects to gain from stopping the vote counting in Michigan.

Here’s a pretty good example of how, in aggregate, late tabulation of mail-in ballots from all counties might have some surprising effects on close states and close races.
The first batch of mail ballots from Houston County GA came in about an hour ago. From yesterday’s in-person the county was about 60/38 Trump. The first mail tranche was 2,026 Biden and 1,558 Trump, narrowing the gap by another 500. Coming from a relatively small county that is solidly Red/Trump, it’s just 500 net. But along with lots of other mail ballots from lots of other little counties… that’s how this works. And that’s why Biden keeps tweeting “count every vote”. And there are still up to 20,000 mail ballots out in Houston County alone.

Despite how the media are reporting most of this, and certainly despite FOX prime time cry babies, the actual filings so far are not “aggressive” and are not even factually robust. A couple don’t even bother to specify facts alleging violations. Others specify facts that might only produce a hearing. At least so far, this legal maneuvering has not ventured into the realm of threatening to overturn any state results. And any that might would be a month or more away.
And just to be clear, the Supreme Court does not have jurisdiction at this point and might never. The Court only has original jurisdiction in cases arising from a civil dispute between states or cases involving ambassadors. Any case involving a legal challenge from a private party to a state election would have to first go to trial in a lower court, usually state. Federal courts defer in general to state courts in determining their own laws, such as election laws. In Bush v. Gore the “final” authority of the Florida Supreme Court was challenged on a federal constitutional issue – equal protection (an earlier due process cause evaporated).
At this point I’m inclined to see this as political posturing intended to keep the angry violent GOP base energized and perhaps as a pretext to lots and lots and lots of Senate obstruction ahead.

9. No food or drink (except water bottles) on the counting floor.
10. No chairs; you have to stand.
11. Back then, masks and social distancing weren’t required, but they are now.
I know Republicans don’t like following rules. But if they get kicked out for not following the rules, that’s on them, not the election officials.
