When our politics are polarized and electorates and elections are statistically and numerically as close as they are these days it can be hard to be positive and hopeful.
But I think it helps to think about the electorate differently to simplify the analysis and also to better understand where we are. I’m actively involved in local, mostly non-partisan elections. I volunteer my services on a few campaigns directly, casually volunteer for a bunch more, and I’ll be attending some local campaign events next Tuesday night to share the drama and hopefully celebrate. Smaller races feel different. And it’s the numbers that make that so.
My father was a local elected official for a brief period when I was growing up. In Seattle actually. And I’m always reminded of something one of his campaign managers shared with me in one of his campaigns. He walked me directly through the math. The numbers of voters who would vote. The numbers who were already going to vote our way. The numbers we had to move. And the effort that would be involved. (As an aside, I still suffer a little PTSD from doorbelling and canvassing at the age of nine.)
If you begin by discarding all the states that are essentially irrelevant to the Presidential election (thanks not to the Electoral College but to “winner-take-all” laws in those states) you are left with about seven states. A tiny mathematical analysis of that leaves you forced to conclude that Fat Hitler’s only path to 270 must include at least one blue wall state (MI, PA, WI). So the race lies in those three states and those 15 to 16 million voters. That’s a California Senate race. Cool. Kamala knows how to win those. And Republicans obviously don’t.
But we shouldn’t and won’t stop there. That’s because of something I mentioned at the outset of this post. Polarization.
You see the sad fact is that a really substantial portion of those 15 million voters already decided how they were going to vote months or even years ago. You guys ought to get that. Right? Admit it. You did too. And so did our shitty trolls. But it’s not just us. It’s a lot of voters. Really it’s a huge majority of voters. Even among the voters who, when asked by some survey drone, declare themselves to be “undecided” really are not. That’s just a thing that is. And we have to accept. The “gettable” voters are probably no more than five to ten percent of those who will actually vote. Moving those larger numbers is a long term project involving the culture and a not insubstantial amount of resistance from billionaires intent upon enslaving us like their own personal herd of dairy cows. But I digress.
Now wait. That means the number of voters we are actually fighting over is pretty fucking small. Probably no more than 1.5 million total in just three states. My dad’s old campaign manager would fucking love those numbers. And we should too.
So let’s consider that Vice President Harris started out this sprint just fourteen weeks ago and immediately proceeded to raise over a billion dollars to spend on those 1.5 million voters. And that her campaign manager Jule Chavez Rodriquez and her campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon have since the beginning been laser focused on those voters. And there are more volunteers, PACs and orgs pitching in than ever before in history. They know they have a job to do as well supporting down ballot candidates. And if we can trust the polls at all, they are doing a good job of it.
So where does that leave us then? Sure, in a close race. But not actually as close as it seems once we exclude from consideration all the voters who, sadly, don’t really count. If Harris averages a 3% lead among those three states that works out to winning those 1.5 million voters 975,000 to 525,000. If she averages a 2% lead it’s a 900,000 to 600,000 race.
Yes the numbers are “small”. But only in comparison to the total turnout of 200 million nationwide, or the blue wall turnout of 15 million. Compard to the actual number of voters who are in play a 300,000 vote lead is actually pretty fucking huge. I’m not trying to pretend it isn’t “scary”. Close elections are scary. Fascism is scary. But there’s really no reason to pretend that things are worse than they really are.

Four years ago we were all unemployed, wiping our asses with used coffee filters and fabricating surgical masks out of old bras and rubber bands.
Worthy of note: an independent public polling company publishing media polls in the final weeks of the campaign who measures a significant poll lead has an incentive, completely unrelated to partisanship, to underreport that lead. If your “analysis” predicted a very narrow win for party X, and X goes on to a much larger win, that’s unlikely to be regarded by the media and the political class as a “miss”. And you’ll forever be credited with “getting the call right”, even if your analysis was way the fuck off. So the conservative approach (“conservative” from a business standpoint and not politically) is to always call the race closer than it really is.
Compounding this is a general and very misleading bias in the media, in business, in politics, and in a large sense in the public that assumes an “out-of-touch elitism” on the part of political scientists and survey scientists, again irrespective of partisanship. But media tropes and narratives that play upon these myths about “heartland values” and “regular folks” apply a partisanship to this misleading bias. Consequently if a pollster predicts a larger win for a liberal communitarian Democrat than the final outcome this is almost always portrayed and perceived as a big and fundamental flaw by the pollster revealing institutional bias rooted in class and elitism. But if the pollster overestimates a conservative populist Republican win it is much less likely to reflect negatively upon the company, its methodology, or its analysis. The miss is instead portrayed and perceived as a reflection of “healthy skepticism” that “respects traditional values”.
The aggregate averages, and many of the individual swing state polls are missing by a lot. Their data is their data. And in the end most of those who accompany their published data with analysis that includes specific predictions like vote margins, EV counts, etc. will probably still be within the MOE – but likely to be about as far off within the MOE in favor of Fat Hitler as they can get away with. There’s nothing scientific about this phenomenon, unless you are using sociology as your science. It’s not good math. It’s just good business.
And it’s not just good business for the pollster’s and their reputations. It’s also very good business for their most loyal and devoted customers in the media. Calling the race closer keeps Democrats panicky, doom scrolling, and engaged right up until the last minute. And it not only drives media engagement it drives sales. You’ll see a lot more paywalls for content this week.
