I’m not choosing this because I think it’s a “good” poll. I’m choosing it because I know that its unique survey methodology produces response bias. So it’s very easy to see how the survey analysis responds to that.
Take a look at the very first table of crosstabs, fourth row. See what they did there?
ActiVote relies on a mobile phone app to engage with respondents. Slick, I guess? But you can easily imagine that such a survey would produce response bias by age. And sure enough!
So they rely on voter file data from companies like Catalist to “weight” the responses. In the case of respondents ages 18-29 they take it waaay down more than half, from 27% of the sample to 13% in the results to reflect historical turnout. Likewise they more than double the response for 65 plus.
Now look at gender. Big response bias in favor of men over women. So again big adjustment to match historical turnout data. You’ll also see a note appearing below that table in which they explain why there is no crosstab for Latino vote. The smaller a crosstab sample is when compared to the overall sample size, the more error.
Whatever percentage of response by party affiliation Scotty P feeeeels is “correct” all polls will weight those responses to match the historical data. That’s only a problem when the total response by any particular affiliation is so low when compared to the overall sample that it can’t be relied upon. That’s not the case for a sample with 51% “Democrat” response, 44% “Republican” response, and 7% “unaffiliated”. And if we are going to be concerned it ought to be with that 7%.
I know I am.
But as this ActiVote survey also demonstrates, we should also be concerned about methodology.
And lastly since response weighting is based on historical data, we should also pay attention to data indicating shifts and trends away from that historical data.
Which is why I mentioned the gender response bias. ActiVote surveyed 400 responses, only 112 of which came from females. That’s adequate. But only so long as the actual voting in November is very faithful to that historical data. It probably won’t be.

When I find myself, as I frequently do, pointing out to almost anyone that entirely according to the evidence collected and reported to us, armed, violent, militant domestic terror groups spend months planning and preparing in advance for what took place on Jan 6, that they orgnaized logistics and secure communications, that they met and planned and trained in secret, that they obtained funding and support from prominent Republicans, that they coordinated with people working inside the White House, that they amassed huge stockpiles of military weapons, ammunition and explosives and transported them to the DC area ahead of time, that they staged some of these weapons caches outside of DC to avoid early detection and arranged for transportation into the Capitol, that remotely triggered explosive devices were planted all around the Capitol ahead of the attack, that the thousands of people who took part in the attack were led and organized by these militants, that those people came quite well armed with guns, explosives, chemical weapons, spears, knives, and clubs, that as they gathered and launched the attack the leaders and the mob chanted threats to assasinate the Vice President and elected members of Congress including the Speaker, and that as Ashli Babbit breached the outer doors to the Speaker’s Lobby and attempted to force her way in, she was to any properly trained and prepared police officer an obvious suicide backpack bomber bent on carrying out those threats by exploding a backpack bomb inside the Speaker’s Lobby where members where sheltering, the most common response I hear is “Huh.
