Community Transit is opening many new routes. Notable among them is # 117, which will run every half-hour from the Mukilteo Ferry terminal to Lynnwood P&R, in 29 minutes, beginning Monday.
Previously this run was hourly and the trip took just over an hour.
This means I can travel from the ferry terminal to the downtown Seattle stadia in roughly an hour, using bus transit and light rail. As a resident of Island County, I avoid the taxes that make these trips possible.

People really struggle with probability. In many ways humans are sort of hard-wired for consistency and certainty. The uncertainty that is incorporated into calculations of probability triggers some of our deepest fears and drives us to seek out certainty where it may not actually exist. A lot of financial and accounting consulting is built around providing executives with a reassuring sense of steady, predictable results using forecasting and financial projections. Yet business continues to experience cycles and periodic financial collapse, reminding executives that uncertainty is always there. But also driving those same executives to spend handsomely on products and services to alleviate those feelings of uncertainty. There’s good money to be made offering a sense of certainty where none may truly exist.
Nate Silver and guys like him come from a world of providing that kind of reassurance and sense of certainty. And in terms of fields of endeavor like investing, or professional sports, that works quite well. Yes, at the end of the day the world can still surprise. But focusing on expected value, iterated across a reasonable frame of time and repetition works. Even if a batter strikes out a lot, if they also get on base just enough and happen to hit a ton of homeruns, over time they have a positive expected value. Outliers still exist. The world still surprises us. And if that batter happens to have a bad run in the pivotal game of a championship series he will strike out and your team will lose. The averages over time make him a good bet. But a bet is still a bet.
However, this doesn’t work quite as well when trying to assess expected value in an all-or-nothing single unique event like a one-time voting event in an election between two unique candidates. And that’s one of the reasons these methods of estimating expected value are both good but also very imperfect. And the guys behing these methods all know it. They know that they are trying to model a unique, one-time event based on a bunch of statistical variable gathered from other different, and often not so closely related events. That makes them anxious, uncertain, and it drives them to seek out greater certainty.
It’s really very unfortunate for Silver that he built his reputation and his businesses on a sense of “certainty”. It puts him in an impossible position. Granted, it’s a position on the lounge deck of a very large yacht sailing in turquoise 75 degree waters. But it’s also a position that drives him to juice his numbers. It was only a few days ago that Silver intoned “There is no normal in this election”, as he was trying to explain to his subscribers why Harris was leading in his polling averages but his forecast continues to give Trump a higher probability of winning 270 votes in the electoral college.
Silver is conceding to some extent that he is off the map with this election. And we can easily see why if we consider the unprecedented number of surprise events that have taken place in such a compressed period of time. In modern history there has never really been any kind of election season like this one before. Not even close. This is exactly the kind of environment where we can expect a model like Nate Silver’s to fail, even if he isn’t juicing the numbers. And let’s face it. He is. He’s done it before when his model was confronted by too many strange, unprecedented events. He admitted it. He could not help himself. His need for certainty overcame his reverence for the math.
This is just not a good year to rely on these kinds of elaborate statistical models to estimate probability. That happens. In lots of fields. And it’s times like those when people stop looking for certainty and turn instead to hustle, discipline, and hard work.

Single family lots are being bought up all over Seattle to put up these three story places (I call them silos) with a sky deck often with a dadu. Almost always two silos or more per lot. Just one street away a solid roomy single family home with a large once nicely landscaped garden is being redeveloped into three silos with 3 dadus – that’s six addresses.
But getting back to my block, we believe that these absentee landlords are biding their time to buy up adjacent lots and then build these silos on the joined properties. There are rental houses next door to BOTH the properties in question.
