– It’s not talked about much, but one of the biggest reasons to end marijuana prohibition is because of the environmental damage that’s done by having the crop grown illegally in our national forests and parks.
– Governor Gregoire has the rare chance to sign a truly progressive drug law reform bill.
– A reader pointed me to this post from Geoff Baker on the Mariners Blog at the Seattle Times. Towards the end of the post, he talks about new Mariner Tom Wilhelmsen, a one-time hot prospect who left the game in 2005 after being sent to a treatment program by his former club, the Brewers, for marijuana use. As someone who writes about sports and not drug policy, Baker’s thoughts came across as honest, insightful, and indicative of how people are having trouble accepting the long-unquestioned idea of treating marijuana the same way we treat other drugs. When some of the best athletes in the world – from Michael Phelps to Tim Lincecum to Santonio Holmes to countless NBA players – have all been exposed as occasional marijuana users despite excelling in what they do, it just doesn’t compute any more why a team like the Brewers would piss away their investment in Wilhelmsen the way they did. Now that he’s a Mariner and joins what might be their strongest pitching staff in years, let’s hope they’ll be rewarded for giving him a second chance.
– Last week, I was watching a rerun of The Chappelle Show and it was the sketch where they juxtaposed how an upper-class white criminal who committed a financial crime gets treated with how a lower-class minority criminal who committed a drug crime gets treated. The sketch contains a very graphic scene where the white criminal’s dog is shot by raiding police officers. It had been a while since I’d last seen this and it hadn’t occurred to me how similar this was to what happened to Berwyn Heights, Maryland mayor Cheye Calvo – except for one major difference – Calvo was completely innocent of any crimes and this fact should have already been obvious to the Prince George County Sheriff’s Office.
Calvo is still fighting back against the reckless officers who invaded his home that day and shot his two dogs. And the latest development is even more sickening. One of the officers tried to get the charges against him dropped because he claims he shot one of Calvo’s dogs after it was already dead. The judge rejected the plea. How disturbed does one have to be to shoot a dead dog in the head? And how out-of-control is the Prince George County Sheriff’s Office that not only do they have psychos like this guy their police force, but that they continue to insist that their officers did nothing wrong during the raid?

Legalizing pot has national security implications. Specifically, pot has saved the lives of American soldiers. In particular, Sgt. Peter C. This morning, the Container Ship Horizon Tacoma en route to Tacoma from Dutch Harbor, Alaska, developed Engine Trouble off Neah Bay. The Captain shut the engine down to avoid further damage and called the Coast Guard. The rescue tug, which is based at Neah Bay, at State Expense, was called out. Took nearly a day for the Crawley tug Hunter, assisted by the Garth Foss, to tow the Horizon Tacoma into the Port of Tacoma. The shipping companies are supposed to take over the funding of it this year, and some were fighting it, thinking only the tanker companies needed to pay. Well, I think this morning, the Horizon Tacoma, showed any ship can develop trouble. One of the aims of this program, is to have something as a last ditch defense against something like the aftermath of an Exxon Valdez type disaster in treacherous waters.(I do know that the Valdez was caused by human error)

A little background on the Horizon Tacoma, she is U.S. Flagged, and U.S. Owned, built in an American Shipyard, since it is a Jones Act vessel, it is used primarily on domestic runs, like the Tacoma-Anchorage-Kodiak-Dutch Harbor-Tacoma run. Good save though this monring for the Hunter, fuel oil spills can be just as bad as Crude Oil spills.

They should be common and mandatory in treacherous waters where some big ships pass on a regular basis. Cape Flattery/Neah Bay included. I believe somewhere in the Strait of Juan de Fuca is where a fishing boat was rammed, by the USS Airzona in 1934. Then again, there was no radar in those days. The tugs in Prince William Sound had a chance to prevent another disaster earlier this year. Another Exxon ship I believe, the Sea River Kodiak, lost power in the sound. ALthough it would not have been as bad as the Valdez, the Kodiak although a used ship, is double-hulled.(The last single-hulled tanker, and ironically the Exxon Valdez’s sister, the Sea River Long Beach was retired last year). Plus with Prince William Sound, escort tugs are mandatory since the spill.

Also, back in January, the Sea River Kodiak had some electrical problems in Prince William Sound. The Sea River Kodiak is owned by Exxon, and could say although it was older than the Exxon Valdez, it replaced the Exxon Valdez and her sisters, mainly because Exxon, more concerned with keeping their high profitability, did not follow the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 and get double hulled ships until it was too late to buy new. The company that built the Kodiak, was forward thinking, because it was double-hulled from the start. Last I heard about the Exxon Valdez, later called the Sea River Mediteranean, was that it was no longer a tanker, but an ore carrier.

Unfortuantely the damage was done that day, but the only consolation the courts gave was they upheld the ban on the re-named Exxon Valdez from re-entering Prince William Sound. Exxon ended up selling the boat, which was losing money on the routes it had to be transfered to(Middle Eastern routes) because of the ban. They ended up selling it.

@34 That’s why Obama wants a 10-year, $119 billion tax on the big banks (which they can easily afford) — so taxpayers will break even on the bank bailouts.
I’m not sure what your point is. Of all the rightwing stupidity we’ve been inundated with lately, their foaming-at-the-mouth opposition to rescuing the banking system from collapse is the most asinine of all.
In 1930, a third of America’s banks went under, and in those days there was no government insurance program (paid for by fees on banks) to save depositors.
The Hoover administration, marching in lockstep with the laissez-faire ideology that still prevails in the GOP, did nothing to stop the bank runs. Historians now agree this policy was one of the important causative factors that turned an ordinary recession into the Great Depression.
In the current crisis, nothing has incensed the uneducated, uninformed, redneck-conservative elements of our population than the bank bailouts. Nobody could be stupider than these people.
Letting the banking system go under would have had catastrophic consequences. We’d be looking at 20% or 25% unemployment instead of 10% unemployment. Even Bush, an idiot in all other respects, recognized this and initiated the bank bailouts in the waning days of his administration. Obama’s first act as president was to continue this policy, and within a couple months, turned the situation around. Very quickly, panic subsided, and the financial system stabilized. The stock market, which bottomed in March 2009, regained most of its losses by the end of the year.
And this will cost taxpayers nothing if Congress passes Obama’s bank tax.
Just how stupid can the knee-jerk redneck-conservatives be? The same people who brandish guns as a form of political speech, and shout “Keep your government hands off my Medicare!” in townhalls? Judge for yourself. All I can say is, anyone who falls for their bumper-sticker slogans or the faux-populist demagogues leading them is just as stupid as they are.

RR @ 42: The wingnuts who rail against Obama’s bank tax are the same ones who blame Obama and the Democratic Congress of 2007-2009 for the bank bailouts – conveniently ignoring the fact that it was G.W.Bush who started that ball rolling.
The main difference between Bush’s version of the bank bailouts, and Obama’s version, is that Bush simply handed the money to the banks without any strings attached – Congress couldn’t even ask how the money was being used, and the banks didn’t have to tell them. Under the Obama bailouts of the banking and auto industries, there were provisions allowing regulation of executive salaries, how the money could be used, accounting requirements, restrictions on bonuses, etc.
Logical consistency has never been a wingnut trait. They look for the bright red buttons which motivate their base, and they push those buttons. As long as they can dream up some spurious argument to blame banks, lawyers, Communists, Jews, and liberals in general, they feel like they’ve accomplished their purpose for the day – the truth be damned.
I miss the old Republicans of my youth. They would be utterly embarrased to try to make some of the arguments you regularly hear coming from wingnuts today.
