One thing that strikes me, generally, is how many mayors are not good at mayoring. In Seattle every mayor since Rice has either lost the election or left at or before the end of their first term.
Nationally, I was struck during the Presidential primary how many of the candidates had been mayors and not a lot of successful ones. Other than Booker, they all seemed like either they were forgettable or bad mayors. Even people who did well in other jobs. Maybe there are different standards we hold mayors to, or maybe it’s the job.
Anyway, wash your hands right now.
For these careerist politicians, being in office is like heroin – it’s highly addictive. They keep running for office, even when they are lousy at any job for which they have been elected in the past.
I don’t think Durkan’s politics or her history suit her to big-city governance anymore (if they ever did). She’s always been a civil rights skeptic, and fairly pro-developer, pro-police, and authoritarian adjacent. I was surprised she ran for mayor and assumed she was put up to it by the big real estate developers.

Quite a few people know I have been bitching about this for at least two years. The whole saga of the 666 Fifth Avenue property scandal stinks to high heaven. Jared bought it at the absolute top of the market in 2007, and even by those standards he wildly overpaid. He took his Father-in-law’s advice about it, Fat Donny told him he need to “make a splash” in the New York real-estate market and probably told him he could scam the investors, banks and certainly the taxpayers later.
Kushner and his partner in that purchase got all the most valuable bits. The residential leases went to the partner and Kushner got the commercial space. The building is apparently considered undersized for the footprint it sits on, but nobody is going to give Kushner the $4 billion or so he’d need to knock it down and rebuild it taller to be more profitable in Manhattan’s post 2008 real-estate market.
So fast forward to 2017, a huge balloon payment is coming due, some $1.8 billion on a building that is only worth about $600 million. Kushner had tried to do work outs or re-financing with the lenders, but every single one told him to go fuck himself. He bought it, it was his responsibility to maintain the financing and make the goddamn payments as he had agreed to under the contracts. He was in waaayyy over his pointy little head.
All of a sudden, in early 2017, the Chinese government-connected Insurance giant Anbang seemed about to ride to the rescue with a super-sweetheart deal. They were investing $4 billion in the Kushner company, and buying 666 Central Park West but somehow he’d still retain 80% ownership, and magically net a $600 million profit from a sale price that would have made it the most valuable building in Manhattan.
The deal was a little too good in fact, and the Chinese version of the SEC looked into it, and the Chairman of Anbang ended up getting arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison for embezzlement, among other things.
With Kushner again foundering under his massive debts, he then turned to Qatar for a loan, and they turned him down flat. They knew a shit deal and scam when they saw it. They don’t maintain a near Trillion-dollar private bank in London operating without keeping a lot of very knowledgeable Lawyers and business researchers on staff.
Then something very interesting happened. Kushner’s best oil company buddy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman effectively declared war on Qatar by blockading them from the air and sea, with the assistance of the US Navy. Their claimed reason was that Qatar “exported terrorism”, but the REAL reason was the Qatari’s refusal to censor Al-Jazeera and their criticism of the Saudi royal family. Bear in mind that Qatar hosts two major US military bases, and is considered one of our primary allies in the “War on Terror”.
What is even more curious was the fact that the Fat Donny administration took Saudi Arabia’s side in the conflict, which caught out State Dept and Military officials flat-footed because Qatar was a LONG time US ally and hosts the largest US air base in the middle east and the one crucial to the fight against ISIS. US military officials were concerned for the safety of Soldiers stationed at the base if the government turned hostile. About 4 months later, we just as abruptly did a 180 and supported Qatar again, again with no warning to the State Department or the military leadership. They were deliberately and specifically kept out of the loop.
A month later, a Canadian company Brookline, decided they wanted to rent 666. The whole thing, on a 100 year lease. Somehow they claimed that they wanted to pay all 100 years rent in advance, which completely coincidentally came to $2 billion. They agreed to pay the property taxes, maintenance and improvements for that next 100 years on a building they are renting. That they could have BOUGHT for less than $600 million, even less if it had gone into foreclosure.
Guess who owns 30% of Brookline? Oh, right. The sovereign wealth fund of Qatar.
Fat Donny used the US Military to muscle the Qatari government into bailing his son-in-law out of a major financial mess of his own making, and the American taxpayers paid for the whole goddamn thing.

Consistent testimony was that police “don’t prevent anything”, and only serve to “make many situations worse”. Business and property owners railed against MPD for refusing to make any effort to protect property by arresting looters and vandals, choosing instead to focus on making arrests of peaceful demonstrators and piling up lots and lots of overtime. Plenty of eyewitness testimony confirming that police willfully ignored and declined to make arrests of vandals and looters. Others reported that during an historic spike in violent crime, officers are declining to even investigate serious incidents involving shootings, robberies, and car-jackings.
Other cities would be well advised to take notes here. Metropolitan police departments staffed by hyper-militarized occupation forces from surrounding distant suburbs are not there to protect you. They are there to protect themselves and their suburban communities. And if you don’t give them free reign and lard them with absurd overtime they will turn on you. Cities need to develop effective alternatives to police now, before things get as bad as they have in Minneapolis.
