Wednesday Morning Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 4/19/23, 8:14 am

Good morning. Yes, SPD should apologize for how it handled the 2020 protests. But as noted in the article, Chief Diaz has already apologized. The department should apologize and apologize and apologize. It was really bad. But absent real reform, or more, does anyone believe it wouldn’t happen again?

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Black leftists in the United States being charged by the DOJ for acting as Russian agents.

Moreover, from at least November 2014 until July 2022, Ionov allegedly engaged in a years-long foreign malign influence campaign targeting the United States. As a part of the campaign, Ionov allegedly recruited members of political groups within the United States, including the African People’s Socialist Party and the Uhuru Movement (collectively, the APSP) in Florida, Black Hammer in Georgia and a political group in California (referred to in the superseding indictment as U.S. Political Group 3), to participate in the influence campaign and act as agents of Russia in the United States, including the following indicted defendants:

    Omali Yeshitela, a U.S. citizen residing in St. Petersburg, Florida, and St. Louis, Missouri, who served as the chairman and founder of the APSP;
    Penny Joanne Hess, a U.S. citizen residing in St. Petersburg, Florida, and St. Louis, Missouri, who served as the leader of a component of the APSP;
Jesse Nevel, a U.S. citizen residing in St. Petersburg, Florida, and St. Louis, Missouri, who served as a member of a component of the APSP; and
Augustus C. Romain Jr., aka Gazi Kodzo, a U.S. citizen residing in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Atlanta, who served as a leader of the APSP and a founder of Black Hammer in Georgia.

    Cool lock them up.

Say, did they operate freely for the entirety of the Trump Sadministration only to be exposed and charged by ‘First Vegetable’s’ DOJ?

    You left out some stuff.

Ionov, Sukhodolov and Popov conspired to directly and substantially influence democratic elections in the United States by clandestinely funding and directing the political campaign of a particular candidate for local office in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 2019. For instance, the superseding indictment alleges that Popov expressly referred to this effort on behalf of the FSB as “our election campaign,” and Ionov referring to the candidate as the “candidate whom we supervise.” Ionov and Popov allegedly intended that this election interference plot would extend beyond the 2019 local election cycle in St. Petersburg, and subsequently discussed that the “USA Presidential election” was the FSB’s “main topic of the year.”

Dumbfuck assures us on the regular that Russian influence on the election of 2020 election is utterly farcical, a hoax, a sham, imaginary.

Perhaps the reason I left out the candidate stuff is that the candidate was not indicted. But (s)he was an unindicted co-conspirator, UIC-4 in the DOJ filing. See item 15 on page 6 of the superseding indictment, which I apparently cannot cut and paste.

UIC-4 ran for office in St. Petersburg in ’17 and in ’19, and was the Director for Agitation and Propaganda of the APSP. IOW not a Trumper.

Unless you are referring to a different candidate, of course.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine didn’t occur on Trump’s watch. Since the indictments are to compel the defendants to STFU about their support for Russia’s behavior in the war, it’s irrelevant that they were saying shit we didn’t like more than a year before the invasion.

Unless you are promoting broken-windows policing of speech we don’t like.

Kreepshit threatened to bore us all to tiers after the last election with a lecture from Third Way about “extreme Dems”..

The coward chickened out cuz’.. things didn’t quite work out the way it babbled.

Last January (post election) Third Way updated its analysis of red state crime.

    Its prior analysis triggered kreepshit.

Third Way “extreme dems” good. Third Way “crime” bad.. whatevs..

We found that the murder rate in Trump-voting states has exceeded the murder rate in Biden-voting states every year this century. Cumulatively, overall murder rates since 2000 were on average 23% higher in Trump-voting states. For the past 21 years, the top 10 murder rate states have been dominated by reliably red states, namely Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Missouri. Even when we removed the county with the largest city in Trump-voting states (and kept them in for Biden-voting states), murder rates were still significantly higher in these red states.

And while media reports give the impression that murder rates are skyrocketing in blue areas, murder rates have actually increased at far higher rates in Trump-voting states over the past two decades, widening the Red State murder gap from a low of 9% in 2003 and 2004 to a high of 44% in 2019, before falling to 43% in 2020. Since 2000, murder rates have increased 39.4% in red states and just 13.4% in blue states.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A member of GOP leadership in the Tennessee House of Representatives was recently found guilty of sexually harassing at least one legislative intern, likely two, by an ethics subcommittee acting in secret, NewsChannel 5 Investigates has learned.

Rep. Scotty Campbell, who serves as vice chair of the House Republican Caucus and who recently voted to expel three Democrats who engaged in a gun violence protest on the House floor, suffered no consequences as a result of his actions.

Despite accusations of sometimes extremely vulgar comments and other inappropriate advances, Republicans did not remove the 39-year-old East Tennessee lawmaker from his leadership position nor from his committee assignments.

But taxpayers have paid for his actions.

NewsChannel 5 has learned that potentially thousands of dollars have been spent to protect one victim, relocating her from the downtown apartment building where she and Campbell both had apartments, shipping her furniture back home in another part of the state and placing her in a downtown hotel for the remainder of her internship.
    …

“I had consensual, adult conversations with two adults off property,” (Scotty) insisted.

“I think conversations are consensual once that is verbally agreed to. If I choose to talk to any intern in the future, it will be recorded.”

U.S. positioning troops ahead of possible Sudan embassy evacuation

The heavy fighting in Khartoum has left many stranded in the city of 5 million people, including embassy staff who are sheltering in place at the compound eight miles from the international airport.
    …
Some in the administration are hoping to avoid scenes reminiscent of the evacuation from Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2021. The crush of thousands pleading to leave the city as the Taliban took control became a defining image of America’s withdrawal.
    …
The airport, located in central Khartoum, is closed but would be inoperable even if it reopened due to damage from bombardment and fighting. The roughly 70 U.S. staff at the embassy have no options to leave Sudan on their own without immense risk to their safety. For the most part, U.S. diplomats in Sudan are unaccompanied, meaning they do not have their family with them at what’s considered a challenging post, a State Department official said.

The first sentence is from the autopsy report, page 2. The second sentence is from page 28.

If you are going to allege that the dead POS didn’t fire, you need to

More on the hands of the dead Atlanta POS:

VII. Indeterminate range perforating gunshot wound of the right hand (gunshot entrance
    wound YY):
    A. Comminution of the right index finger metacarpal.
    B. Wound path of back to front and upward with the body in the standard anatomic
    position.
    C. Exit wounds have been designated as “ZZ” and “XX”.
    D. A projectile is not recovered from the wound track.

Comminution refers to a fracture in which the there are multiple fracture planes – usually more than two fragments.

IX. Indeterminate range perforating gunshot wound of the left hand (gunshot entrance
    wound DDD):
    A. Fracture of the left middle finger proximal phalange.
    B. Exit wounds designated as AAA, BBB and CCC.
    C. A projectile is not recovered from the wound track.
    D. Wound path of back to front and upwards

So the POS was shot three times in the left hand and twice in the right hand. Then there is the possibility that one or both hands attempted to cover wounds before the POS took a bullet in the brainstem, at which point he was Fetterman’d.

That’s a fair amount of blood on the hands. Easy to miss residue if it’s covered in blood. And then there’s the possibility that the body was washed, partly or completely, prior to or during the autopsy. Report doesn’t say the body was washed, doesn’t say it wasn’t.

The hands were bagged prior to autopsy and the bags were handed off for testing, which if done was separate from the autopsy.

ACAB, you don’t have what you think you have. What you have is nothing. Why nothing? Because the projectile taken from the cop was matched to the gun owned by the dead POS. Autopsy doesn’t explain that.

    Dead POS FAFO. Good.

    INVITED REVIEW
Understanding Gunshot Residue Evidence and Its Role in

It is important, as well, to be aware that the absence of primer
GSR does not necessarily mean an individual did not discharge a
    firearm.
There could be barriers inhibiting deposition onto the
hands, sampling limitations, proprietary ammunition formulations,
environmental conditions, low deposition, retention issues, or limitations in method of analysis.
    …
Also, in suicide-by-gun cases, not all
decedents will have primer GSR on their hands. One study on
known suicide-by-handgun victims showed primer GSR could
be found only 50% of the time
.23 As a result, GSR testing should
never be used as a definitive measure of whether a person
discharged a firearm. In fact, some laboratories reject any samples
that have been collected from gunshot victims or fatalities, because the findings could result in ambiguous conclusions.

The metallurgy might not work, but the rifling matching sure does.

The method was often used when no gun was found, making it impossible to identify a bullet by matching rifling marks left by a gun’s barrel.

Metallurgy takes awhile, I’ll allow. Rifling matching takes a slug, the firearm, a test bullet, and a water bath. Oh, and a microscope.

Some asshole didn’t bother to look at Scientific American.

It would have saved you from another round of “I’m a moron AND an asshole!”

In 2003, Donald Kennedy, then editor in chief of the journal Science, wrote an editorial called, “Forensic Science: Oxymoron?” He answered this question, in effect, “yes.” Unfortunately, the answer remains much the same today. Forensic experts continue to employ unproven techniques, and courts continue to accept their testimony largely unchecked. However, courts have recently begun to recognize the scientific limitations of one forensic field: firearms identification, in which an examiner visually compares fired bullets or cartridge cases and opines on whether the items were fired by the same gun. Contrary to its popular reputation, firearms identification is a field built largely on smoke and mirrors.
    …
Few studies of firearms exist and those that do indicate that examiners cannot reliably determine whether bullets or cartridges were fired by a particular gun. Firearms identification, like all purportedly scientific proof, must adhere to consistent and evidence-based standards. Fundamental justice requires no less. Absent such standards, the likelihood of convicting the innocent—and thus letting the guilty go free—is too great. It is perhaps this realization that has led courts to slowly start taking notice and restrict firearms testimony

Riffling, striation, casing marks are bullshit science and the few times it’s been studied researchers given a slug and a gun and suggested that they came from a single event will report a match. Even when none of the ‘supplies information’ is true. AND experts making a positive match and then asked to perform the test again later with the exact same elements but not told it’s a retest come to a different conclusion about 50% of the time.

You’re clinging to the past. Typical conservative. Non LAW ENFORCMENT scientists are raising flags that it’s bullshit while law enforcement insists its 100% sound.

NDAA Responds to Scientific American Article on Firearms Forensics

The self-exaltation of the authors does not overcome black letter law. In fact, one of the authors was recently excluded from testifying before a California jury because the judge found he lacked the appropriate expertise. It is bizarre that the authors, who could not perform any aspect of firearms toolmark microscopy, deem themselves thoroughly qualified to criticize the discipline. While it is abundantly clear that they could not reliably recognize matching toolmarks, that fact does not mean experienced and qualified forensic practitioners are similarly inept.

    Ouch.

There are at least four studies [Kiesler 2018, Smith 2020, AMES II 2022 (pre-publication), Iowa State 2022 (pre-publication)] that met PCAST’s prescribed standards since 2016. All show that examiners are remarkably accurate when they call something a match. In fact, false positive error rates in these studies are less than 1%.
    …
Near the conclusion of their article, the authors acknowledge that there have been additional studies with false positive error rates less than 1%; their term “amazingly” conveys disbelief that experienced practitioners could be good at their jobs. To avoid this inconvenient fact, the authors shift the goal posts by attempting to manipulate the statistics. The outlier statistical approach they propose has never been adopted by the scientific community.

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
