Wednesday headlines: Murder, chaos, bowls, & swimming

by Geov — Wednesday, 1/2/08, 6:00 am

This morning’s fare from the local dailies looks a lot like their TV counterparts: both are highlighting crime (a New Year’s Eve murder on Capitol Hill) and the frivolousness of people swimming in cold Lake Washington and Seattle’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display being delayed a few minutes by a computer glitch (oh, the humanity!)

Nationally, the Iowa caucuses (cauci?) will dominate headlines tomorrow, but today it was international news: the post-election chaos in Kenya, and the post-assassination chaos in Pakistan.

Oh, and a bunch of college teams played football yesterday. In breaking news, exactly 50% of them won their games, a total one seasoned analyst described as “about average.”

In other words, yesterday was a holiday, and nothing much happened. Iowa (and New Hampshire next Tuesday) should change that for the next few days.

Gotta check more than The Times and Pretty-Ignorant, Geov…

Like the headline for this story: http://www.canada.com/vancouve.....38;k=32275

“No bed for B.C. woman stuck in U.S. hospital”

What’s the message here? If you’re Canadian and get sick in the U.S., you end up getting de facto deported from your own country. What a way to keep health care costs in line! Send your citizens out of the country, then lock the door on the sick ones who trie to come home.

Who knew there was this benefit to socialized medicine???

I wonder…if HRC gets elected, and she fobs Hillary Care Redux on us, will it also serve as part of her solution to the immigration issue? While it will take time to sort it out, the possibilities could get intriguing…

Just think…when someone exhibits symptoms of anything, instead of health care, prescribe a one-way ticket out of the country to, say…Vancouver, BC. Then let the Canadians take care of them since they’d be blocked at Blaine or Sumas from coming back into the country.

What a remarkably progressive policy option! I’ll bet it becomes a major feature of The Darcy’s campaign platform, if, that is, she ever gets around to talking specifics rather than vapid valley-girl generalities like the ones she has on her website.

Still…The Darcy always has her gig as The Daily Kus’ Prexy debate fashion commentator to fall back on when she loses again. The Eighth Congressional District is centrist, not a hot bed of netroot nuttiness; these are the suburbs, not Capital Hill and the U District.

Who needs the funny papers when you have front page reports on how liberal policies back fire.

Hawaii was humiliated by Georgia last night, proving they never belonged in a BCS game. Though Hawaii went undefeated, they played only 2 teams with winning records.

Boise St. was a cute story last year, it was also an aberration.

But I’ll lay odds that Hawai’i is playing in what will be the Pac-12 within three years, along with either a Nevada school (probably UNLV), Boise State or possibly Fresno State…..

    Piper,

As far as anecdotal evidence is concerned, exactly how might one weigh Meeks’ story against that of Nataline Sarkisyan? Does the fact that Meeks is still alive while Sarkisyan is dead mean so little in this argument.

And you wonder why folks here look askance at your intellectual laziness.

    Wingnuts,

Ok I can understand why you’d want to vote for the Mittster if you’re Mormon (yay, Go LDS!).

But Mike Huckabee (the “huckster” according to El Rushbo) brings up an excellent point.

How you can possibly in your right mind support a man on whose watch nobody was executed? I mean if a Governor is to be Prez, he must have overseen a state killing. Killing means everything to you people!

    @12…DJ…

The one has nothing to do with the other. The Meeks story is illustrative of the truth that the Canadian health care system isn’t the paradise its claimed to be by many who advocate a single-payer, government controlled system. Additionally, Meeks needed treatment for a burst appendix and infected gallbladder, not exactly controversial transplant stuff, and it wasn’t that a complex decision needed to be made as to whether the care should be covered. Instead, the issue was that the Provincial system couln’t accommodate Ms. Meeks because there were no beds available for even this routine care.

Or should we have opted for Prof. Singer’s thinking and let the old gal expire? After all, she’s old, and her death would mean both less of a burden on B.C. health care and it would serve to decrease the surplus population. You don’t have a problem condemning such thinking.

Toss your personal insults all you like, but they only serve to evidence your own smarmy arrogance and personal hubris.

    Piper,

First of all, I don’t know anyone who claims that the Canadian healthcare system is a paradise–and that includes Michael Moore. There is a difference between pointing to other systems as examples of how things might be done differently and simply saying that we should uncritically clone whatever they do.

Secondly, none of the Democratic proposals on the table mimic the Canadian system.

So, your anecdotal evidence stands as a counter argument to claims that only exist in your imagination. I trust you know the term for this fallacy.

As for “personal insults,” I suggest you step down from your high horse before you fall off. Better yet, inject some intellectual rigor into your comments here, and I’ll stop pointing out your intellectual laziness.

    6:

Chill, bro. Hawai’i lost, and lost badly, that’s for sure. But this is another reason why a real playoff system is needed, with all eleven D1A (Bowl Subdivision? Phooey!) conference champions plus five at-large teams. Hawai’i probably wouldn’t have fared much better in a playoff, but at least no one would be complaining as much about that system over a two-loss LSU team making the championship. Use the major bowls forthe playoff system, and as a bonus, keep the lesser bowls in place, perhaps as a football equivalent to the NIT.
