Feb 7, 2016 Edwards barricaded himself in his father’s bathroom with knives and a hatchet and was attempting self-harm and threatening suicide. His father summoned an ambulance and then attempted to prevent Edwards from fleeing the home with his weapons. Responding EMTs encountered Edwards engaged in a physical altercation with his father, and threatening both his father and the responding EMTs with the weapon. EMTs requested police response. Responding police reported a blood-soaked crime scene with Edwards still brandishing the knife and threatening responding police. Police succeeded in disarming Edwards and securing him in handcuffs and restraints to the EMT stretcher. Edwards continued to issue threats, including death threats directed to his father and responding officers.
Rather than file criminal charges for the threats, assaults, and resisting arrest, responding police issued an Emergency Custody Order, authorizing a custodial psychiatric hold and evaluation in a custodial mental health facility. The order was issued Feb 8, 2016 and expired 72 hrs later, with no follow up or further action taken by the responding police agency. On the same day that the order expired a local judge issued an order barring Edwards from possession or licensure for any firearms.
Edwards was admitted to the Virginia State Police Academy in July of 2021. When asked if Edwards had disclosed his prior arrest and mental health incident at the time of his admission, the Virginia State Police initially lied, and said he did not. In subsequent statements the VSP has said that records of his prior mental health cannot be publicly disclosed, but that he had reported his prior arrest and that the VSP had ordered “a full evaluation”. But no record of any such evaluation has been released or is known to have ever existed.
In Jan of 2022 the State of Virginia graduated Edwards from the Virginia State Police academy, issued his law enforcement certificate along with a service weapon, and assigned him to Henrico County. By the end of that year he was dead along with his three victims.
In Jan of 2023 the Inspector General of Virginia opened an investigation into Edward’s admission, graduation, and hiring by the VSP. Last month that investigation was closed with no report. And neither the Virginia Inspector General nor the VSP have issued any statements nor responded to inquiry regarding the investigation. The family of the victims in May hired attorneys and gave notice to the Stat of Virginia of the intention to sue the state, alleging wrongful death and various other injuries.

You know, that’s a very interesting point. Imagine we’re voters confronted with a ballot that forces us to choose between, say, Hunter Biden and Doug Mastriano or Kari Lake. What do we do? These are our options:
(1) Vote for Hunter.
(2) Vote for Mastriano or Lake.
(3) Write in another candidate.
(4) Leave the ballot blank.
(5) Move to another country.
The write-in option can actually work. It did in the case of Byron “Low Tax” Looper, a candidate for Tennessee state senator, whose campaign strategy was to be the only candidate on the ballot. To accomplish this, he murdered his Democratic opponent just before the election. But the widow ran as a write-in and got something like 95% of the votes.
So, if I had to choose by Hunter and a totally wacko Republican, I’d consider writing in doc.
