Wednesday!

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 3/5/25, 7:59 am

Good morning you lovelies. Did you watch Trump’s joint address? I sure as shit did not. I had better things to do, like walk part of the way to Drinking Liberally in uncomfortable shoes. Probably not my best idea ever, but it beats the alternative. Anyway, if you watched, congratulations on being more willing to be lied to by a jackass than me.

Sen. Rand Paul, a strong advocate for shrinking government, made the case that Musk’s cuts – in order to be protected from the courts – should be moving through Congress in the form of what are known as rescissions packages.

A rescissions package claws back funding that was appropriated by Congress and only requires a simple majority vote in the GOP-led Senate and a majority vote in the GOP-led House.

The challenge for Republicans, however, is that voting to do so would mean that they will be on the record for voting for cuts that could be unpopular with some in the American public and even with some of their own constituents.

Trump administration rethinking Guantánamo immigrant detention plan amid cost issues and power struggles

Trump’s plan to use the U.S. naval base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to detain 30,000 immigrants has been hitting major legal, logistical and financial hurdles ever since he surprised many in his own administration by announcing it.

Now, as agencies spar over responsibility for operations there and over blame for what has gone wrong, there is a growing recognition within the administration that it was a political decision that is just not working.

As Trump keeps losing in the courts, backing down on tariffs, and rehiring people Elon hastily fired, a couple things are becoming clear:

    1. This administration is knee-jerking every major decision.
    2. Trying to base policy on colossal lies really doesn’t work.
    3. Lying about the math doesn’t work either, because math doesn’t lie. For example, claiming $8 billion of savings by canceling an $8 million contract only saves $8 million.

  37. 37

    Roger Rabbit spews:

    Wednesday, 3/5/25 at 11:46 pm

Here’s another GOP math fail: If you fire every single person on the federal payroll, including the president and vice president, the White House staff, members of Congress and their staff, the Supreme Court justices and all the federal judges, and everybody else drawing a federal paycheck, you’d save about $350 billion a year. Multiply that by 10 years and you get $3.5 trillion. Merely extending Trump’s tax cuts, without add-ons, costs $4.4 trillion. So how do you balance the budget (as some GOP House members are demanding) by firing federal workers? The math says you can’t.

  38. 38

    Roger Rabbit spews:

    Wednesday, 3/5/25 at 11:52 pm

80% of federal civilian workers do NOT work in D.C.; California has the most, followed by: Texas, Florida, and Georgia. Most either work for the V.A., Homeland Security, or Defense Department; USAID and Department of Education together employ fewer than 9,000. You can’t get to there from here, but it makes great MAGA talking points, amirite?

This is an administration based on lies, fuzzy math, and knee jerk diktats. It won’t turn out well for the people who voted for it.

    Trump extends his winning streak:

Trump tells Elon Musk he has no authority to fire government workers

Politico reports that Trump convened a cabinet meeting on Thursday in which he told his cabinet secretaries that they, and not Musk, had final say over whether to terminate federal workers in their departments.

    https://www.rawstory.com/trump-elon-musk-2671283170/

But only after federal judges told Trump that President Musk has no authority to fire federal workers.

I won’t dispute that with him, but all he’s doing is calling himself dumb. Which he has been all along. This time he wants to fire the generals and admirals and use their salaries to give the privates and corporals a pay raise.

What does Tuberville have against our military, other than he never served in it?

Fat Hitler has agreed to give up and settle for a CR.

This means, for example, that there will be no gigantic increase in funds for Tom Homan to deploy the huge army he would need to round up undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers, nor would there be the administrative staff to process the millions of deportations, nor would there be funding available to hundreds of thousands of commercial airline flights to transport those he has promised to deport. Not before September.

He won’t be building the new cities he promised.

He won’t be building spaceships to Mars for Elmo.

He won’t be able to hire the army of DOJ attorneys he will need to defend him and Elmo and other departments who are trying to sell off government agencies and buildings.

And he won’t build a single foot of new wall.

Billionaires get a huge tax cut.

Tesla sales in Germany fell 75% in Febuary.

As a very tiny car company Tesla doesn’t have to sell tens of thousands of cars each month in a place like Germany the way companies like Toyota would. But they do need to sell a few thousand, or else find some other market where they can sell cars.

But that’s a problem because there just are not that many places where you can sell cars that start at $45k for a stripped down, range limited, econobox in really large quantities. And that’s because of a host of factors. First are incomes and population. You need a big country with a large, well established middle class. You also need infrastructure to support the plug-in vehicles. Germany as the largest and one of the most affluent European nations was an important market for Tesla. It can’t be substituted in someplace like Spain, or Brazil. And because the infrastructure is absent you won’t sell any Teslas in developing nations, regardless of population or income.

Tesla just lost 4,500 sales each month in just one nation alone. And those numbers are repeating in many of the other nations that are actually capable of supporting Tesla sales at all. It makes sense then that the meme stock TSLA is streaking towards oblivion like a meteor. It will soon have fallen back to where it was trading six months ago. But these sales numbers will not get better. Fat Hitler’s voters will not be able to pick up the slack. Nor will they be willing to do so for cars that are cramped, have limited range, are lacking in luxury refinements, and have the highest depreciation. They may be stupid. But that hardly matters in this case.

Scoop: Dems privately confront Trump speech disruptors

In meetings and discussions with leadership this week, Democrats who heckled, walked out in protest or were otherwise disruptive were given a talking to about their tactics, sources said.

What we’re hearing: Leadership is “very unhappy” with those who went beyond traditional protest tactics like outfit coordination and refusal to clap, a senior House Democrat told Axios.

Roughly a dozen Democratic disruptors — including Reps. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.), Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) and Maxine Dexter (D-Ore.) — were called into a “come to Jesus meeting” on Thursday morning, the senior Dem told Axios.
The top three House Democratic leaders were present: Jeffries, Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.).

Showin’ up the black guy who supposedly is in charge:

“Would they have done that to [Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi]? You know the answer: Never,” the lawmaker said. “So you’ve got to put the hammer down.”

Sunnova’s stock plunged over 70 percent following its announcement, according to Bloomberg.

The news comes a year and a half after the Biden administration’s Department of Energy Loan Programs Office closed on a $3 billion loan with the solar company—the largest federal loan to a solar company in history.

Fact: the overwhelming majority of normal American media consumers would never agree to sit through 90 minutes of one person talking, even if that person was wildly popular.

Given all the actual facts, it makes no sense for any Democrat to draw attention to a 90 minute political speech given by an unpopular political opponent.

    Facts spews:

Fact: the DOE loan program that Sunnova was approved for was authorized under Title XVII of the Energy Policy Act passed into law in 2005 under the 109th Congress when George W Bush was President of the United States and when Republicans controlled both the House and the Senate.

Fact: the program applies specifically to economically disadvantaged households meeting income requirements.

Fact: the program does not involve any taxpayer funds or extending Treasury financing. The Treasury backs private bank loans with requirements for servicing and reporting.

It’s a Republican program for low income households and communities and it isn’t a government loan.
